Terren fakes an injury and tries to flirt with Urlene. The Weyrhealer has strong words for him. When R'fal finds out about it, he's mortified at the behavior of his father. He urges his father to be respectful.
J'ackt and Alina try to patch things up after a disastrous incident at Barrier Lake Weyr. With his cousin possibly pregnant with his baby, J'ackt resolves to find a way to never have children in the future and talks to Urlene about surgery.
When Cyradis finds out, she confronts J'ackt about it and they get into an argument. After much back-and-forth, he begrudgingly agrees to a turn participating in flights and using moths if he loses, so that children with bronzerider blood will be conceived for the sake of the Weyr. But he wants no knowledge of any children he might father.
Alina is also upset when she finds out J'ackt wants surgery to make him sterile, but her main concern is his health. She agrees to go with him to Urlene to decide if it's too risky.
J'ackt goes to see a Mindhealer about his many issues.
Aviday's green rises for the first time, and her lack of sexual experience becomes evident afterward when she wakes up with R'fal. The young brownrider was inexperienced as well, and he's distressed about hurting the girl. She makes him promise not to tell, but later R'fal indirectly explains the situation to Urlene. The Weyrhealer offers to give R'fal some experience, purely to help the young man learn.
L'cor makes a similar offer to Aviday, though the girl takes some time to think it over. When R'fal and Aviday talk again, they make plans to "practice" together so neither of them as the same bad flight experience. But first they spend some casual time together on the beach.
T'ner comes to check on Aviday and finds out what happened. Aviday vents to him about the difficult relationship with her mother and her desire for Daturna to leave her alone. T'ner goes to confront Daturna and warns her to stay away from Aviday. Time will tell if his words will have any effect on her.
Urlene considers the offer from Briata for the three of them to live together while Urlene's son is young. She decides the arrangement is best for her and her child.
After running into Lorican at Barrier Lake Weyr and finding out about his recent marriage, Urlene loses a patient and returns home distraught. Briata and Y'gel comfort her in different ways.
Later, Lorican comes and tries to apologize. While Urlene hardens her heart against him, she also agrees to let him see their son and Lorican gets to meet him for the first time.
