Reports for Amber Hills Hold

June 4th 2007

Amber Hills has been hopping, which of course makes old Lord Benaroy's heart glad, and he can use all the good news he can get being that his daughter is STILL missing... However, life goes on in the Hold as usual.

The Steward Cyrek had a rather difficult night. It seems he has been plagued by nightmares recently. However on his moonlit walk he bumped into Journeyman Larstad finishing up a commissioned telescope. The smith offered the Steward a chance to look up at Belior through the scope, which was certainly a sobering sight.

Harper Faram took one of the refugee ladies, Lymia, out for a romantic picnic. It appears the Harper must like her very much, for he put a lot of thought into the evening, even going so far as to arrange a babysitter for her! It also gave him a chance to brag about his sister's skill at cooking. Now that his sister has gone to the Weyr, perhaps Lymria can help ease his loneliness?

Faram is able to share his loneliness with his new friends, Kaldyn and his family. The Harper meets him as Kaldyn is planting out in the fields with his daughter Reia (who is mightily impressed by the flit, Kio). Kaldyn offers a cup of klah to the journeyman and they all reflect what they have lost, and what they have gained. The family also made friends with Evaleine, who was riding by on her runner when it got spooked and came up limping. Kaldyn offers to have his son take a look at the runner while his new friend can take a bit of a rest. Reia (ever interested in the beasties) is fascinated by the runner and it seems she can't wait to learn to ride one! It seems Kaldyn's family is a very welcoming one. In fact, they are expecting a new family member! It seems the cotholder's sister lives at the Weyr, and rather than give her new daughter to a fostermother there to raise, she has asked Kaldyn and his wife Karei to take care of the child. He laments his sisters lack of a maternal instinct, but his wife tries to defend her, though secretly she wonders if he might be right. For however long the child stays, it's obvious she will be in a loving family!

Lord Benaroy's family is still going through trials. His daughter is missing somewhere around Garnet Valley, but he has no time to search for her. He has a Hold to run! It is his duty to hear a dispute between two of his Holders - Frinton and Erivas. It seems Frinton has grazed his beasts on land newly granted to Erivas for Turns, and bad blood has developed between the two family, resulting in Erivas's young son being trampled in a stampede. Why can't the farmer and the herdsman just be friends? (and a co-post for anyone who can figure the obscure musical reference there...)

The Lord Holder's son, Benaran also has been busy! Seems he really has his sights set on his father's Hold. He was rather miffed at the idea that all the land belonged to his father and not to him as he rode a-dragonback to inspect a stand of trees the Woodsmiths would be harvesting. Of course, he found the female greenrider equally interesting, though she rather disliked his advances... Perhaps he will have more luck with Evaline, though. The two met in the stables and he quickly realized her connections to Coral Bay Hold could prove useful to him. It seems he intends to charm her in the hopes of gaining an edge on his brothers in the race for being named Heir. One woman who will _not_ be very interested in being a Lady Holder would be Rikka. She had a rather unpleasant meeting with the Lord Holder's son when she came to fix an electrical problem. It seems Benaran is less than impressed with female crafters and was rather suspicious of her and her abilities. Despite his scheming and grumbling, he was able to get some other work done, such as working on the little problem of how to boost patronage of Amber Hill's own Tavern. He has asked his brother Royah to accompany him to the Vintner Hall's Tavern to see how he can help their local watering-hole compete with their new neighbor...

Though his crusty brother was not very welcoming, Royah gave Rikka a bit more pleasant reception. The Lord Holder's son met the journeywoman as she took her lunch beside an irrigation channel. It seems Royah is much more at ease around a female crafter than his brother, which was a relief for Rikka. She had been feeling rather lonely at Amber Hills. She reflects on how solitary her life is as she worked on some projects in the Technician's building. The male technicians don't have nearly the trouble she has, and therefore cannot understand her situation, though they do, for the most part, accept her as a crafter and an equal. Hopefully now that she has a new roommate her stay at Amber Hills can be a bit more pleasant!

Evaleine seems to be fitting into Amber Hills very well! Not only had she met Kaldyn and Benaran, but she also met Faram when she needed some minor repairs done to her violin. The Harper is more than happy to help her, and it sounds like she will be teaching him a new song or two! She also met with Shadux to ask if she might be able to move to new quarters now that the family she had been staying with would be welcoming their daughter-in-law who was expecting their grandchild. He directs her to speak with Zelanka. She takes his advice and asks the Headwoman to help her find a new apartment. Zelanka isn't sure at first, but puts Evaleine in with Rikka to be her roommate. Their first meeting goes well as it seems the former lady has no problem with a woman crafter. In fact, she can't wait to tell her family back at Coral Bay about her new friend! Later she even offers to ask one of her connects, a bluerider connected to the Coral Bay Bloodline, to take Rikka to visit her family someday. Rikka is surprised and happy at the request. It seems those two are getting along very well! It seems Evaleine has also decided that its time to make herself useful around the Hold. She asked Zelanka for a new job, which the Headwoman was only too happy to give her! It seems she will be in charge of some of the young ladies fostered to the Hold, which will take a bit of the weight off of Zelanka's shoulders. Even so, now that she is settling into her new life, Evaleine couldn't help but reflect on her past one. As she stares into the swift-moving current of the river, she remembers her late husband and his reckless, self-destructive tendencies. Despite the fact that he was unable be a husband in every sense, she would not leave him, even for the promise of children. What will the future hold for this intrepid woman? One thing is for certain, life at Amber Hills will be an adventure!

It seems the Hold is alive and hoping! Why not make a persona and join in on the fun today?
