Wingthird Jeyme meets a Healer named Zaverin at Turns’s End, and they bond over the losses and changes they’ve felt over the last few turns. She starts to cautiously open her heart to the dragonless healer.
A’vel received bad news: his father is dying. He turns to R’nar for comfort. Aydhara continues to sulk because she didn’t Impress. Br’elt joins Ash Wing and is welcomed by D’ren.
The Weyrlings have their first flights. R’bain and A’lin discuss the changes in their lives, and V’rdryn and A’lin bond over Impressing blue dragons. N’kevyn tries to hide getting burnt by an irate firelizard from Aydhan, which doesn’t work. Aydhara and Ketlyn reconnect.
The Weyr holds a Completion Ceremony for Barrier Lake Weyr at the beginning of month 2 to celebrate the massive amount of work that went into its construction. Guests were invited from near and far, including O'rosin and Cirina from Dolphin Cove Weyr. Near the end of the night, Kapera’s gold dragon Riyanth summons the Weyrwoman back to her own weyr after a man gives her meat. Kapera is ambushed and stabbed, and in her panic for her rider Riyanth goes /between/. Kapera’s weyrmate J’nus tries to throw the man responsible - Zaverin - off the ledge, but Zaverin is rescued by D’kere.
Kapera is stabilized by the Healers but is in a coma for several days. J’nus stays by her side, and the bronzerider is unhappy to learn that Zaverin is not dead after all- although he is relieved that he is not a murderer after all. When Kapera wakes, she is convinced by J’nus to stay alive a little longer, at least until they are able to obtain justice for Riyanth. She is visited by Weyrleader N’vanik and his dragonless weyrmate Talryne from Dolphin Cove, and both she and J’nus are grateful for their support and friendship. They understand what Kapera is going through better than just about anyone on Pern.
The events at the Completion Ceremony throw the Weyr into turmoil. The Weyrlings are comforted by the Weyrlingstaff and Rasme, whose gold dragon Piketh keeps them from going /between/. Aydhan and N’kevyn leaned on each other to deal with their fear and help, while some of the former River Bluff riders supported each other after yet another traumatic event, including F’lin and D’relt, along with their friends Br’elt and C’lest. Families gather, including Saerya and Rasme, and D'men and Y'rim. Weyrleaders from the other Weyrs visit to offer their support.
Weyrharper Q’vettan and D’kere question Zaverin and find out that his attack on Kapera was an act of revenge. He blamed Kapera for the loss of his own dragon in Threadfall, saying that it was her responsibility to keep his dragon from going /between/ when he was knocked unconscious during Threadfall.
Skybroom Wing is another casualty of Zaverin’s knife when both its Wingleader and Wingthird resign in the wake of the tragedy. Jeyme is comforted by her ex, D’hol.
But life moves on. Rasme has a birthingday. K’lvin recruits a new Wingthird to teach the Weyrlings, but it turns out that he is much too attracted to Viseya. Aydhara throws herself a giant birthingday bash and invites her friends from other Weyrs. She kisses Casmari beneath the stars. The redfruit doesn’t fall far from the tree, as her parents pick up a strange bluerider in a bar for sexy threesomes.
The Weyrlings’ classes continue and they graduate as Senior Weyrlings and move into their own weyrs. N’kayden and Ketlyn decide to sleep together to prepare for mating flights, and both are horrified to discover that N’kayden is a horrifically bad lay. N’kayden finds himself an intimacy coordinator and Ketlyn tries her luck again with V’dryn. Casmari is also worried about mating flights and seeks advice from her father C’rin.
N’kevyn develops baby fever, and also after much searching and spending marks on various ‘foolproof’ tools he finds a clutch of flit eggs on his birthingday picnic, no less. Aydhan gifts two of these eggs to the new goldriders sent to Barrier Lake Weyr: Agyta and Thiseta.
When the flit eggs hatch, N’kayden impresses two greens, Aydhara impresses a blue, Aydhan impresses a brown, and the egg-stealer himself, N’kevyn, impresses his own tiny gold flit - and the work involved cures his desire for another child. Thiseta impresses a green flit and can’t think of a name for it.
Thiseta moves her weyrmate, Master Healer Teigan, to Barrier Lake after her talk with the other goldriders. Thiseta is more enthusiastic about the move than he is, but both are committed to making it work. The pair invite Teigan’s brother K’lvin over for dinner, but the juiciest stories about the Weyrlingmaster come from J’nic.
The Weyrlings survive their Blooding and are assigned to their new Wings.
Early in m6, Thiseta’s gold Imbeth becomes the first gold to rise. Thiseta becomes Senior Weyrwoman with the former Weyrharper-now-Weyrleader Q’vettan by her side to face an uncertain future... especially as Q’vettan’s first move is to fire, and hire, new Wingleaders.
The Weyr has seen some major upsets and big changes are on the horizon. What will happen to the now dragonless Kapera? How will the Weyrlings fare now that they are dragonriders? What changes will Q’vettan and Thiseta bring? Stay tuned!
