Persona Profile: N'mar

Writer: Iluva

Neymar

Name: N'mar
Pronunciation: Ne - marr
Age: 19
Birthday: m2 d8
Rank: Wingrider, Skybroom Wing
Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Craft: Seacrafter
Craft Rank: Student

Physical Description of Persona:
A big, solid dude, there's already a fine base built for his age. N'mar's strength is evident in his thick arms, muscled chest, calloused hands - the result of using the body as an instrument of work, never shying away from any physical task no matter the demands. Standing at 5'10", he's neither a stand-out nor an outlier in any crowd.

His tanned skin is a medium shade of brown from turns of exposure, like soft, sun-bleached leather, and despite the few pockmarks left by acne, he's got a pleasing set of features that somehow leave them unnoticed by most. Maybe that's because he has a rather charming smile, flashing it easily and frequently, and a nicely carved square-ish jaw to frame it. His sparkling blue eyes are probably his best feature, bright, exceedingly generous with their expression of emotion. N'mar's hair is a curly mess of klah brown locks cut just below his ears, and he doesn't spend much time curating any particular look, only cutting it when it starts to drift into his line of sight.

Emotional Description of Persona:
N'mar is hard-working, diligent, and the type to find a friend in just about anyone. He's a solid man accustomed to responsibility. He's learned to thrive in the structure bestowed by knowing one's duties and being able to execute them well. He's used to feeling competent, and trusts in himself and his abilities as much as he's aware of his weaknesses. He just doesn't have that many of them.

As solid of mind as he is of body, he is not totally unflappable. N'mar's strong sense of duty and morals are treasured touchstones that he relies on a little more than even most holdborns, and he's got little patience for those who take teasing or ribbing or hazing too far. Time in the Weyr has loosened him up a little bit, however, and N'mar's developed a solid sense of humor to help balance out his affinity for doing things and doing them right the first time.

He's not all that familiar with struggling with things, though. He hasn't encountered it often in life. With a quick mind and easy demeanor, unexpected hurdles sometimes confuse and frustrate N'mar beyond what even he recognizes. It's not that he expects to always come out on top, but when he doesn't and can't figure out why, he tends to stew and brood and drive himself to his limits to figure out the how and the why attached to it. There's never been much to truly test him, either, which is less a product of supreme, universal competency, and more a lack of exposure to life's nuance. He'd like to be tested and to know more about himself and the world, have a strong sense of purpose in it, but he's also content to drift along with wherever he is right now.

History of Persona:
The son of a fisherman and his wife, Neymar was born in Sunstone Seahold into modest circumstances, without much opportunity to expand beyond the day-to-day duties that came with raising a large family. The oldest of six, he was quickly cast into the role of his father's right hand man, the one who had to supervise the younger siblings when papa was away at sea, who took care of mama when she was bed-ridden with firehead for one incredibly long, touch and go month.

Aside from the stresses that seemed to rise up and fall away with the tides, Neymar grew up a happy lad. He enjoyed the work on the docks as well as the ships, doing the odd jobs no one else wanted to do until he was old enough to really start the intensity of physical labour.

When his younger brother joined them, and proved to be as capable as the rest of the men in the family, their combined efforts slowly paid off. They were able to move into better quarters, and the future began to open up to them like never before. Then word reached Sunstone about the new Weyrhold, Barrier Lake, needing labourers to help assist with construction. With his parents' blessing, he went with a small group to the prospect of a new life, new purpose. Here, with a newfound independence and his focus able to expand beyond the seas, Neymar was quick to adapt to the melting pot of people and ideas floating around beautiful Barrier Lake. The work was good, the hours long, and it was to his great surprise when Weyrwoman Kapera allowed him and many other young labourers to try their hands at Standing, all with the vague and far-away hope of someday Impressing themselves.

Neymar didn't. A few labourers were chosen at Riyanth's clutch, and while he's still been working away, keen to learn all he can about being a rider and sending as many letters home as he can, he's still holding out hope that maybe, just maybe, the tides will turn and one will finally look his way. It hasn't been all roses though. The tragic loss of Riyanth left Kapera unable to lead, though the injection of a new queen, Imbeth, and her upcoming clutch have rekindled his convictions, his dreams, his growing desire to sail through the clouds on a dragon of his very own.

In the gleam of the Hatching Sands lights in month 8 of Turn 12, Neymar was butted in the chest by reality: a brown dragonet, named Sceorlath. For the first time, he felt with certainty who he was and where he would go. N'mar's got a sweet and infectious enthusiasm constantly buoying his thoughts now, and he's been on top of the world since.

Family and Friends
Maranta, 43, Fisherman's wife (mother)
Neyellon, 44, Fisherman (father)

Dragon's Name: Sceorlath
Dragon's Age: 0
Dragon's Hatching Date: m8 d20
Dragon's Colour: Brown
Description of Dragon:
Lean and one day elegant, Sceorlath looks swept in by the sea, not a creature of the sky. His angles have been worn smooth, and for a large-framed dragon he glides quite smoothly on land, air, and water. Ultimately he's made for speed and agility, and for cutting daring arcs through the air. Freshly hatched, however, he’s incredibly awkward-looking, - too thin, each set of appendages far too long. He lacks any of the adorable hatchling roundness, all the sweet baby softness.

For day one he’s all steel spine, solid neckridges, and nail-scraping talons. There is more variation on the ridges of his eyes and curve of his cheeks, the sharp swells of his nostils, but even that is quite spare. Sceorlath’s hide will settle into a sleek, snake-like silhouette at maturity. With a proper oiling, the deep rusty undercurrent of his mahogany hide shows particularly bright in the evening light, and for a short period of time each day he can range from maroon to crimson.

Tactile and highly affectionate, Sceorlath is far softer than he looks. N’mar's his hands are full trying to gently dissuade him from trying to crawl into or onto stuff, including into his or other peoples' laps. His clutch and wingmates will also have to deal with the regular attempts at sitting, curling up together, and sometimes climbing on top of them. Sceorlath's the first to announce visitors of interest to the Weyr, or just to his own weyr. He's an enthusiastic guy with a deep love of his fellow dragons. And although no one will ever accuse him of being shy, he tends to form bonds with those he spends the most time with, and they tend to feel that overflow of him first - whether they like it or not.

At his core, Sceorlath is a steady, even-tempered and easy-going dragon. And he can be rather endearing, especially when he objects to having to do something. Instinctually inclined, the brown needs frequent reminders to slow down and _think_, otherwise he’s prone to doing and then overdoing it. He also needs frequent reminders to focus, which will hopefully improve as he matures. He’s just _so_ excited to be here!
