Writer: Duskdog
Name: D'brul
Pronunciation: Duh-BRULL
Age: 44
Birthday: m10 d2
Rank: Wingrider, Skybroom Wing
Location: Barrier Lake Weyrhold
Physical Description of Persona:
D’brul stands about 5’8”, with a stocky, muscular build. He’s an unremarkable-looking man, with a square face, brown eyes, and chestnut hair that he keeps cropped close. He tries to keep himself clean-shaven, but his facial hair grows quickly and he’s often sporting a 5 o’clock shadow; unsurprisingly, he has a lot of body hair to go with it. His gait is slightly “off” -- the result of a broken leg in childhood that left one leg slightly shorter than the other. Like most dragonriders, he has a few scars -- notably a smallish but visible one on the left side of his jawline, and a much bigger mass that starts on the left side of his upper chest and curls over the shoulder and top of the arm.
Emotional Description of Persona:
D’brul is not the type of person to put too much thought into his looks unprompted, but if asked, he’d rate himself a 5 out of 10. Proudly, because he’s the type of man who thinks that being solidly average in appearance is a virtue (at least if you’re a _man_). Being a “pretty-boy” implies laziness or untrustworthiness or lack of ability. Similarly, he takes an extraordinary amount of pride in being a wingrider, a grunt, a cog in the machine -- that’s where the real work happens, he says. He’s served as a wingsecond at various points in the past, and that’s as far as he would want to go even if higher rank were ever opened to him.
Yes, he considers himself a simple sort of guy. He’s not hard to please, and takes pride in his work just for the sake of it. He’s a bit of a jock turned enthusiastic man’s man with a bit of dad thrown in as he’s mellowed a bit with age. He’s a little bit sexist, and can be patronizing to women without realizing it. He can be gruff and impatient, particularly when he’s out of his element, only to be perfectly genial shortly after, once he’s back in an environment where he feels grounded and in-control once more. He’s a guy who genuinely means well, but often lacks the understanding and/or tact necessary to handle delicate situations effectively.
He discovered painting as a hobby over the past few turns, and engages in it enthusiastically… within the confines of his own weyr. He’s always a little embarrassed when people ask him about it.
History of Persona:
D’brul was born at River Bluff Weyr, another in a long family line of riders including a father and grandfather who both rode bronze. Needless to say, expectations for his Impression were high. He ended up doing rather well for himself, Impressing brown Mogunth just before his sixteenth turn.
To the surprise of no one, life as a dragonrider suited him just fine, and when Thread returned, that didn’t change -- D’brul threw himself into the life he had always imagined for himself without a second thought. He’s been in and out of relationships over the turns -- notably, he had one long-term weyrmate and things ended badly between them -- and has fathered several children along the way. The loss of his home at River Bluff hit him hard initially, but he bounced back admirably and now proudly flies for Barrier Lake.
Family and Friends
Brizah, 25, Wingrider (Daughter)
Dragon's Name: Mogunth
Dragon's Age: 29
Dragon's Colour: Brown
Description of Dragon:
Mogunth is a smallish brown, but well-proportioned, with a vivid reddish-brown hide that’s darker along the back and lightens slightly the closer you get to his toes.
He’s not a particularly smart dragon, but he knows his job. Flying, fighting, flaming -- he can do all that and enjoy fulfilling his purpose, but he’s utterly lost when it comes to anything that requires any deep thought or interest in anything outside of his work. He’s friendly enough most of the time, but he can also occasionally be irritable, particularly when he’s confused about something; he is a dragon who does not enjoy uncertainty in any fashion, and is slow to adapt to changes in his routine like drilling at a new time of day or wearing a new harness that hasn’t been broken in yet. It was only the blessing of a dragon’s short memory that allowed him to finally ease up and settle into his new life at Barrier Lake after the move, and D’brul will probably never voluntarily transfer anywhere even if he wanted to, just to avoid a repeat of that unsettling process.
