Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr

~~~~~~~~Part Two (at least an hour later, after all introductions
we're into the business portion of the day)~~~~~~~
Lenala absently toyed with the placing card. Someone had quickly
crossed over Rhosyn's name and replaced it with hers. She had declined
wine, wanting to keep her head clear. Besides, her stomach was so
tight bundle from nervousness that she couldn't eat or drink.
H'lib was lounging in his chair with relaxed pose. He keep throwing
hostile looks towards N'vanik. "I'm surpised Cyradis let N'vanik out
to play with us," murmured to his Weyrwoman. "Or maybe she just forget
to lock the playpen's gate."
"I'm rather concerned about the things we've been hearing about the
holders' attitudes lately," Raelis said. "The young goldrider from
Dragonsfall was attacked at a Gather, wasn't she?"
"I wasn't happy to hear about it either," K'reyel said in response.
"Some holders, no matter how many times we save them from the damage
thread can do still seems to think that we are child-stealing
parasites living off their hard work." He sighed. "I wonder if perhaps
we can talk to the Harper Hall perhaps get some new ballads out there,
and have their Journeymen carry good news about riders and dragons."
Saibra wanted to point out that the Holders had a right to resent
dragonriders when one of their own was attacked by a bronzerider at
the Weyr, but she let her Weyrleader speak on their behalf.
"Good idea," Cyradis nodded and reached out to squeeze N'vanik's hand
under the table. It had been his idea in the first place for the
original one now in circulation, even it if had met mixed results. "At
least we could try to effect the next generation. "Although we're
seeing most of the sentiment localized to Emerald Hills," and they all
knew why.
"So," she added while she had the others attention. There were a few
things we really need to knock out." She looked at Saibra for support.
"We're beginning to see a concentration of bloodlines that is
concerning. I know we've resisted this in the past but perhaps a
temporary exchange of junior golds could help defuse it problem?"
"I can agree with that," Lenala spoke up. She and Rhosyn had often
discusses this, so she felt confident when she continued: "River Bluff
has three mature golds now and they are all of the same bloodline.
Orlaith and Vilarth are daughters of same dam and Anaeryth is
Orlaith's daughter. None of them represents River Bluff's Bloodline.
Little bit of new blood wouldn't hurt."
Even though Cyradis had clearly been acknowledging Saibra to speak,
the Dragonsfall Weyrwoman snapped her mouth shut as Lenala interupted.
She nodded behind what the fill-in Weyrwoman said, still wondering
where River Bluff's real Weyrwoman was and why that hadn't been
mentioned.
"Dragonsfall is in a similar situation. My Weyrwoman second's gold was
clutched and raised at Dragonsfall, and our other goldrider is a
daughter of that bloodline. Beyond Chioneth, the bloodlines at
Dragonsfall are mostly limited to Queens from that territory. It would
be nice to see a refreshing of the bloodlines, and to be honest, it
would be nice for goldriders who have only ever lived at one Weyr to
get exposure and experience elsewhere, in a similar manner to the way
Holders foster out their children."
S'shin glanced at Raelis with a raised eyebrow. They'd had some
similar discussions and even reached out to the Dreams End and Far
Island Weyrleaders with their concerns. It was the Weyrwomen's
thoughts that would count in this particular discussion though. He
squeezed her hand under the table encouraging her to speak up.
Vista Point's Weyrleader glanced his Weyrwoman too but said nothing,
nor made any gestures. This was purely goldrider business.
Raelis was a bit irritated that he felt the need to encourage her. As
if she couldn't assert herself. "We've been concerned with that as
well." It wouldn't be politic to point out the Weyrs they'd discussed
it with had taken no action. "It would be in our best interest to take
steps before this causes any issues."
"Just a temporary exchange, though?" N'vanik didn't want to trade
Meledei somewhere permanently. Not unless she wanted to move.
"Is it truly such a concern?" Galardja asked. "Some bloodlines are
simply stronger than others." And several of her Queen's children were
already spread across Pern.
"Yes," Cyradis nodded to her weyrleader. "Just temporary. Of course it
is always more important for some than for others," Cyradis smiled
diplomatically to Galardja. "I'm sure you can remain self-sufficient
if you do not want to participate." She looked around the room at the
faces gathered. Some were open and others closed. "I was thinking of
sending our Meledei who is fully Dolphin Cove perhaps to Saibra for
her support and some additional training she could get at Dragonsfall."
"Our Lanniya would also benefit getting trainging from someone else
than me and Rhosyn. A fresh point of view might get thru to her
better, since we were both trained by same Weyrwoman," Lenala was
pointedly not looking at Galardja. "I'm worried we might be repeating
past mistakes."
K'ran didn't speak since Lenala said what they wanted, but he nodded
as she spoke and had Rogueth send Vilarth an encouraging thought. She
was doing well, and he was happy to let the goldrider handle the
goldrider issue.
"Indeed," Galardja muttered.
Knowing a bit of the situation with the young goldrider, Cyradis
smiled and nodded. Maybe she was a magnate for problem riders but she
felt more than ready to take it on. "I'd be happy to have her here
with us Lenala. She's just flown isn't that correct?" A double bump of
Riverbluff blood to Dolphin Cove's bloodlines was a very positive
thing.
"If you three," M'stan looked among the Dragonsfall, Dolphin Cove and
River Bluff leadership, "want to do this, it's something you can work
out between yourselves. I believe there were other reasons we were
called here, yes?" He was bored by the topic of switching immature
goldriders and ready for the Weyrleaders to get back to matters that
pertained to all of the Weyrs present.
Saibra's lips twitched in a barely contained smile of amusement. She
had grown up at Far Island and knew M'stan's temperment quite well.
She was sure that he was thinking the words "women talk" with a sour
inflection, as she had heard him utter the words before.
"We can talk more about the details later," Saibra agreed to placate
the Far Island Weyrleader, although her eyes showed amusement as she
looked at Cyradis and Lenala.
"I'd like to discuss disaster relief plans," N'vanik said. "We deal
with things like hurricanes and earthquakes. I'd like to have plans in
place so we can respond quickly and save as many lives and as much
property as we can."
Lenala just nodded an agreement to Cyradis' and Saibra's suggestions
and settle back to listen. In these matters, she had no say.
Cyradis allowed a tiny smile in return to Saibra and Lenala as the
Conclave moved on to the next agenda point.
