Name: Seorla
Age:
15
Birthday: m6 d28
Birthplace: Topaz Seahold
Rank: Candidate
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Physical Description of Persona:
Seorla's looks aren't striking enough to draw attention, but to anyone who spares a second glance there's determination, even stubbornness in the firm set of her jaw and her watchful, dark klah-brown eyes. She has a strong build, tending to lean and angular rather than curves, and long limbs that put her on taller side for her age; when she was younger she'd sometimes be mistaken for a boy alongside her older brother. Her short, wavy dark hair starts to curl at the ends, softening the sharper lines of her face, and her naturally light golden-tan skin darkens to bronze where she's been exposed to the sun.
From her sailor father, she's inherited a natural balance and agility that's as useful on dragonback as it would have been aboard ship, but falls away when she thinks too hard about it, attempts to be graceful turning into awkward clumsiness. Although she's usually plainly dressed, she has a secret longing for the brightly coloured beads and ribbons she vaguely remembers from her seahold childhood.
Emotional Description of Persona:
After growing up between shifty relatives and unsympathetic holders, Seorla is cautious about showing her true feelings or trusting anyone outside her closest family. She's used to a precarious existence, where everything has a price, weakness is taken advantage of and possessions, friends and home can disappear in an instant. The more stable, communal life at the Weyr, with plentiful food and time for leisure, is unfamiliar and strange to her. Outwardly, she appears polite, compliant and not unfriendly, if a little secretive and sometimes odd when she doesn't read the Weyr customs correctly. Inside, her mind is always working, looking for advantages that could mean a better life for her and her mother.
Although practical, independent and not afraid of work, Seorla will take a short cut if she can find one, a habit which comes from not seeing the point of striving to benefit an employer who'd turn her out when times turned hard. If she does find herself in trouble, she'll lie fluently to get out of it without the least pang of conscience.
History of Persona:
Seorla was born at a small coastal hold, a few days' travel down the coast from Topaz Sea Hold. Her parents had both lived wandering lives - her father had been a sailor and her mother had come from a large holdless family of dubious reputation, who drifted around the territory doing seasonal work and occasionally resorting to thieving. With rumors of the coming Pass threatening, the pair decided to settle down and started a family.
In the third Turn of the Pass, the storm that devastated the Sea Hold also destroyed their home. While dragonriders carried out a rescue at the main Hold, help didn't arrive until the following day at the minor hold and Seorla's father was one of those lost. With no other relatives to take her in and two young children, her mother felt she had no option but to turn to her Holdless family. She tried to find work at holds where she could and sometimes this lasted for a few Turns, long enough for the children to get some harper teaching, but eventually her past would catch up with her and she'd have to move on. Seorla's older brother found this especially hard. When he was sixteen, he decided that if everyone was going to assume he was a criminal then he might as well enjoy the advantages, and he left to work for his holdless uncles.
About a Turn ago, a fever swept through a hold where Seorla and her mother had found work. They both survived, but her mother never fully recovered, and the holders began to accuse her of laziness and threaten to turn them out. In desperation, Seorla decided to try to find her brother and uncle, who she'd heard were somewhere along the border with Emerald Falls, so she scraped together a few marks and the two set off, travelling with a trader caravan. They were still some distance from their destination when her mother's health took a turn for the worse and the traders, alarmed by her condition, put out a signal for a dragonrider's aid. When the dragon took an interest in her, Seorla warily accepted the Search. Although she had no thought of being a dragonrider, it meant shelter from Thread for her and her mother - until she could find something better.
