Persona Profile: I'lek

Writer: Estelle

Name: I'lek
Age: 22
Birthday: m11 d15
Rank: Wingrider, Lightning Wing
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr

Physical Description of Persona:
I'lek is a bundle of energy with an ever-present grin. He has short, light golden-brown hair and bright blue eyes, fair skin with a light dusting of freckles, an oval face and a mischievous expression. He's rarely to be found sitting still, except possibly when lying on the beach reading one of his favourite romantic tales.

A Threadfall injury cost him his lower right arm, which was amputated just below the elbow. He has a prosthetic but doesn't always use it, finding it uncomfortable, and has grown adept at many activities one-handed. Due to his injury, he hasn't built up as much upper body strength and bulk as many dragonriders do and has a slender build, which suits the swimming and running he prefers as exercise.

Emotional Description of Persona:
I'lek's personality is gregarious, outgoing and upbeat, and he rarely lets any setback get him down. Facing life as a retired dragonrider at a young age would have been a hard blow for anyone, but he's bounced back with even more energy than before and grabs any opportunity he can find for himself and Lirioth. He loves meeting new people so enjoys transport and messenger duty, and often manages to charm even holders who are suspicious of a greenrider. Another favourite activity is taking the lower caverns staff out to gather plants and herbs, and he's learned a lot from them, although he hasn't so far been diligent enough to settle to a formal Craft.

An inveterate gossip and matchmaker, I'lek has no qualms about interfering in his friends' love lives, particularly his fellow retired riders. Any indication that they might find this annoying goes straight over his head, although he's not entirely insensitive and will stop if he's genuinely upsetting someone. He brushes off any attempts to turn the tables by setting him up with someone, and will gleefully tease and flirt with anyone from senior bronzeriders to elderly aunties.

History of Persona:
Since he seems so at home in the Weyr, people are often surprised to find that I'lek wasn't born there, but comes from a trader family. His grandfather was the caravan master and he grew up as one of a carefree band of children travelling a route from Topaz Sea Hold with their families, bringing goods from the port there to the inland holds and sometimes to the new Weyr at Dolphin Cove. When the Pass began they stopped at Dolphin Cove more frequently, and it was on one of these visits that Imalek was Searched. He lived there as a Candidate for almost five Turns before Impressing his green Lirioth aged 18.

Despite occasional bouts of mischief and trouble concentrating, I'lek successfully got through weyrling training, but he and Lirioth never made it to a fighting Wing. During Blooding, a gust of wind blew the young green pair into a clump of Thread. They managed to make it back to the Weyr and Lirioth eventually made a full recovery, but I'lek had instinctively raised a hand to protect himself from the Thread and the damage was so bad that the healers had to amputate. Unable to catch firestone sacks in flight, he was placed in the retired riders' wing.

Dragon's Name: Lirioth
Dragon's Age: 4
Dragon's Hatching Date: m12 d7
Dragon's Colour: Green
Description of Dragon:
Lirioth is small and delicate for a green, but makes up for it in her outsized personality. If possible, she's even more flighty, flirtatious and excitable than her rider, and loves chattering to other dragons, whether they want to listen to her or not. Like her rider, she was injured in Blooding and bears a scar on the left side of her neck, but it isn't very noticeable against her pale green colouring. The only time she appears subdued is on Threadfall days, as she longs to join the other dragons in the fight.
