Physical Description of Persona:
Cazavin is a tall man at 6’2”, with broad shoulders and a torso that tapers down to a more narrow waist. His body is strong and fit, a reflection of his many turns as a swimmer. His skin is medium brown, with dark brown eyes and a broad nose set into a wide, strong-jawed face. His black hair is thick and tightly curly, but he keeps it braided into neat cornrows, which he then often gathers back to tie into a loose tail that reaches down to the base of his shoulderblades. Most of the time he keeps a very short beard, but will sometimes go clean-shaven for a while if he’s in the mood.
Emotional Description of Persona:
Cazavin is a fairly mellow extrovert, easy-going and comfortable in his own skin in a way that sometimes just seems to rub off on those around him. He’s confident enough in his profession, in his skills, in his instincts, and just in himself that he doesn’t feel the need to prove anything to anyone. Even so, his emotions run surprisingly deep -- he tends to get very attached to those around him easily, and can sometimes get too caught up in their lives even when his help hasn’t been asked for, or in solving their problems /for/ them rather than just lending an ear or letting them handle things on their own.
He took so well to fatherhood that it eventually became an indelible part of his personality, complete with the terrible jokes. He’s not mad at you, he’s just disappointed. Well okay, sometimes he’s mad. His affection may not have limits, but his patience does eventually. He’s particularly a stickler for safety. Dolphineering isn’t all fun in the sun -- the sea is dangerous even at the best of times, and sometimes what they do makes it even more dangerous even with a dolphin partner at your side, so there’s no place for unnecessary recklessness.
Occasionally, when it’s too quiet early in the morning or late at night, he seems a little sad. He’s not the sort of person who does well alone, and so long as he can surround himself with the bustling energy of the Hall, he’s fine -- but when fewer people are around, his energy diminishes with the waning of the crowd and loneliness creeps up on him.
History of Persona:
Cazavin grew up in a small fishing Hold, so the sea was always a part of his life. He instantly knew what he wanted to be on the night when his father, older brother, and most of the crew of their vessel were returned safely home by a team of dolphineers and dolphins after a nasty shipwreck. The dolphineers were even able to recover some of their lost cargo after a few days when the waters had calmed, and that little bit made all the difference for a struggling Hold. When he was old enough, his parents were proud to send him on to the Dolphin Hall to apprentice.
He proved to be a quick study, and did well at the Hall. He even met his future wife there, a fellow apprentice named Tissandra. They were married when Cazavin was twenty, and their first child and only daughter, Catissa, was born barely a turn later. She would later be followed by two sons, Cantiro and Tavin. The family moved a couple of times during Cazavin and Tissandra’s journeyman postings -- first to Coral Bay, and then to Jade Harbor.
It was during a salvage operation off the coast of Jade Harbor that he lost Tissandra. When she became tangled in the tattered shrouds of the downed ship and dropped her knife while trying to free herself, she did the worst thing any diver can do underwater: she panicked. Even with the help of her alerted dolphin partner, and the other dolphins and dolphineers who responded immediately to his distressed call for aid, they got her to the surface too late, and she couldn’t be resuscitated.
Cazavin went through the stages of grief… mostly. He blamed himself for not seeing that she was in trouble, then blamed /her/ for making the mistake, and for not keeping a level head, even though he /knew/ that even the most seasoned divers often struggle mightily against their instinct to panic in similar situations. It hurt that he couldn’t even blame the weather, or the capriciousness of the sea. It hurt to have to tell his sons that their mother wouldn’t be coming home, and then it hurt all over again to have to tell their daughter, who by this time was an apprentice back at the Hall, herself.
But life goes on, as it does. He remained at Jade Harbor for a short time longer, but when it was time for Cantiro to head to the Dolphin Hall for his own apprenticeship, Cazavin decided that maybe it was time to return, too. He asked to be transferred back to the Hall, for a change of scenery and to be near his family and friends, and to work to finish obtaining his Master’s knots. Being back at the Hall reinvigorated him, just as he had hoped it would, and he worked through his grief even as he worked on his Mastery. He eventually succeeded at walking the tables, and was later tapped by Thayde to be his Hallsecond.
