Description: Onnyth's timing disrupts a little dinner party...
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 11, day 27 of Turn 6
"Pass the wine please?" Teseada turned to her brother. "After that story
of F'neb's I need another drink."
The bluerider protested, "It wasn't that bad, I mean you only ended up
soaked through!"
"I was in the weyrbowl though! And it was in front of the headwoman!"
Teseada remembered the way he'd somehow conspired to get her so wet.
"Mind you I was a brat and probably deserved it.
K'ale laughed and picked up the bottle passing it to his left toward
the end of the table where the goldrider sat. "You were," he agreed.
J'darin had been invited to join Teseada and a few friends for dinner.
Here lately, it seemed he had not been out at all, even with Devyn.
He was planning something to continue his romance with the pretty
greenrider, but for now, he had decided to be social. He had spent a
little time with Tes after Hasaarth had flown Onnyth, though it had
not been as much as he would have liked.
He took the wine as it passed about and offered it to Teseada with a
grin. "I wonder.. have you outgrown the brattiness?"
"Don't you tempt me," she teased. "Onnyth and Daran seem to be doing a
really good job of keeping me in line. That and my brother here."
J'nev snorted into his wine. "That's right, don't any of you get any
funny ideas," he said, looking at the men in the room over the rim of
his glass.
G'wen poked J'darin, from his seat beside his boss. "There's your
answer," he teased.
"Be careful," F'neb warned the greenrider. "I remember some things about
other people too," he teased.
J'darin chuckled at G'wen and nodded, making an exaggerated roll of
his eyes at the small greenrider. "Yes, still bratty. F'neb too."
the bronzerider added as an afterthought, innocently.
He turned his gaze to Teseada for a moment, smiling at her over his
glass. "I'm glad someone is keeping you in line, Tes. Here's to
those brave fellows." He raised his glass, teasing in every curve of
his lips. He was glad she was still seeing Daran. That had been a
touch and go situation, but it seemed to be working out for the best
in all regards.
K'ale laughed with G'wen too. The greenrider was much closer to Tes
than he was at the moment. Though they'd grown up together in the Weyr
and were fairly good friends, they'd never been particularly close. He
grinned at the memory of her skinned knees and the time he'd pushed
her in the lake after she'd kicked him in the shin for some boyish
prank. "Find any dead tunnel snakes in your bed lately Tes," he asked
innocently.
"No, but someone might arrange for a few to be in yours. Especially when
you have company, I heard a rumour about you and a greenrider..."
Teseada
grinned. "I have friends among the cleaning staff."
"Oh please, I dumped K'ale right after the Flight!" G'wen gave the
young brownrider a slow wink.
"You wound me man," K'ale said to Gwen with mock drama clutching his
chest. Then he looked at Tes with an evil gleam in his eye. "Thanks
for the warning, now I'll know who to blame."
E'naer chuckled softly. Time to time he felt bit out, being older than
most of the other guests. But he had know Teseada for a long time and
had had the pleasure to see her through the weyrlinghood.
"Watch it or it may turn out to be trundlebug," he said.
On the other side of E'naer, Daran chuckled at the thought of his mate
finding a trundlebug in her bed. "With all the banter here, you all
realize she'll know exactly who to blame should any little critters
end up in her bed."
K'ale threw his hands in the air grinning at Daran, "Hey! She
threatened _me_. I just reminded her there'd be payback."
"See what I grew up with?" joked Teseada. "It has to be sheer good luck
that I grew up at all! And with F'neb's stunts... Sometimes I wonder how
Sylvian copes."
"The same way rest of us do, with love and patience," E'naer replied.
"Have I ever told about I'las? Now there was a greenrider who loved a
good prank."
K'ale chose that moment to take a sip of the excellent wine and sit
back in his chair with a grin at J'nev. He wasn't about to redirect
Tesada's attention to the greenrider he'd been seeing. Silently he
thanked G'wen for the diversion.
J'nev was just sitting back and listening. They seemed to all be
talking about Teseada, his own sister, in a way much more familiar than
he had ever known her. What was all that talk about a tunnel snake? He
felt a little cut out of the joke.
Teseada could see J'nev had just sat back, and a part of her could
almost sense his thoughts. she knew it was hard to listen to others
talking of people, places and things you yourself didn't know. She
leaned back in her chair to smile at him. Then her expression changed.
Onnyth, who had been sleeping, suddenly awoke and bugled a challenge.
The sound was unmistakable, it was that of a dragon about to rise.
"J'nev, I, I think you should go now. I don't know why, but she's going
to rise." A note of surprise was in her voice, she had expected this,
but
not quite yet.
The bronzerider was a little stunned at the sound of the gold's bellow,
and even more so when his sister suddenly told him he was to leave
immediately. For a brief moment, he wondered if he had not somehow
caused her some trouble! Then he put two and two together and bolted
for the door, not even bothering to stop to pick up his chair. There
was no way he would ever going to let Ankioth participate in one of
Teseada's Flights, even though there was very little chance of the young
bronze winning at this point. But even the thought of lusting after his
own sister made his stomach churn. She obviously felt the same.
K'ale tried to catch J'nev's chair but missed and didn't quite catch
on to what was happening until the shaft of dragonlust hit him.
"Woah," he said looking at Teseada. "Is she..." he didn't get the
whole sentence out before he knew the answer and knew Imalkyth was
going to chase. He didn't have high hopes but at least he didn't have
to bolt from the room like his friend.
E'naer was suddenly thankful he was a greenrider and not affected the
dragonlust. "I'll take my leave too," he said, looking around. Nobody
probably was taking any notice of him anyways. His retreat was less
hurried
than J'nev's.
G'wen gulped, his dark eyes darting from his best friend, to her
dragon, and then catching K'ale's. Jumping up, he squeezed the
brownrider's shoulder before joining his lover on the way out of the
weyr.
If only Daren had the same luxury. "Tes? What's wrong?" He watched
the retreat of the riders completely confusing. What was wrong with
them? And why was Onnyth acting cranky?
Heading out to the bowl, and then the feeding ground, Teseada was
screaming
mentally to Onnyth, **BLOOD only, just the blood. Don't eat them!**
Onnyth bellowed again as a herdbeast was hastily dispatched and drained,
her
maw stained with blood as they beast began to scatter, but that was not
going to stop the gold from taking another, and biting deep into it's
neck
with a satisfying crunch as the small bones were shattered.
K'ale said simply "Flight," in response to Daren then followed the
goldrider out of her weyr at a far more sedate pace than her brother.
Imalkyth sat waiting, eyes whirling having already blooded his kill.
K'ale's eyes began to glaze as he followed the rest of the riders to
the flight room.
Onnyth was ready, more than ready if the small pile of drained
herdbeasts
and bloodstained maw were anything to go by. With a bellow of
challenge,
she sprang into the air, heading out of the Weyr in the direction of
Opal
Cove. The chase was on!
Imalkyth flung himself into the sky after the gold and found himself
near the head of the pack. He struggled for a dominant position and
found it when Onnyth made an unexpected move. He tried for a grab and
missed, but it cemented his drive to win. For once his almost
over-wide wings were working for him instead of against him. K'ale on
the ground below joined in his lifemates raw desire and strained
toward the small pale gold prize glowing before him.
Dinner had been amusing and light-hearted enough, though he had
thought often of Devyn.
It had happened quickly, as it always did, though one moment before it
was clear Onnyth was Rising, Hasaarth had sent him an urgent message.
}:She Rises!:{
He was a half step ahead of the crowd and Hasaarth was barely a
dragonlength behind Onnyth as she leapt into the sky. They had won
her last time! She would choose him again! }:Fly high beautiful
one. I will catch you and fly you well again!:{ He promised and
J'darin forgot all except the complete joining of he and his bronze as
they soared after Onnyth.
Her wings pumping, the gold rapidly gained height, turning her head to
catch
a glimpse of her chasers. She crowed in delight at the sight, wondering
who
would prove worthy of catching her. }:Make me want you!:{ she called to
the
males. }:Prove to me I need you.:{
Torerath's powerful sweeps brought him close to the prize and cut
across the path of a much younger brown.
Imalkyth bellowed in rage at the interloper but caught an updraft and
a lucky turn put him right back on her tail.
The gold was thinking as she sped away from the Weyr. Hasaarth, he had
flown
her well before, and so had other bronzes. But which male was worthy
this
time? Who would it be?
Onnyth caught a thermal, and rose high in the air, only one who could
keep
up with her would have his chance.
Imalkyth roared at his luck and grabbed Onnyth as she soared into his
path, using his wings and tail to entangle her and whipping his neck
around hers.
K'ale' reached out instinctively as he too roared triumph, and swept
Teseada off her feet and into a nearby room.
