R'lor paused in his lecture on mating flights and looked over the class of boys . . . and one girl. The next topic was one of his first significant changes to weyrling training. "All of you now have to face the reality that at some point you _will_ end up sharing a flight with a male greenrider, whether you have any interest in men or not. Out of respect for those future partners, I'm expecting all of you to practice anal sex before graduation. Yes, that includes you brown and bronzeriders, and before you protest, you can choose a partner of any gender for this. The important thing is to gain experience so your body knows what to do."

Tirraze covered her smile with her hand. She did not have this on her stamp card. She was hardly ever a smartass in class, but it really felt warranted this time.

"Sir, I'm not sure I've got the equipment for this. Though, I suppose there could be some crossover with making riding straps... Will I be issued gear, or should I talk to... who, a glass crafter?"

A few people snickered.

R'lor was pleased Tirraze was thinking practically. "I'm actually not sure how the mechanics of winning a flight will work for you. I think it's best to try out different options so you're prepared for whatever scenario occurs. You might wear a harness, but you might not have the time or presence of mind to put it on when Riamorth decides to chase. You might use your fingers, or simply the friction between your bodies."

O'rosin rarely raised his hand. This time he did, uncertainly, looking at Tirraze. "Um...wouldn't you just, do it the way you would with a man? Why would him being a male greenrider change anything?"

"Because we become one with our dragons during a flight," the Weyrlingmaster said. "We're driven to mimic them. When Tirraze is in a flight room, she will in large part _be_ Riamorth and she will likely act as if she were a male herself."

Tirraze grinned at O'rosin. "Who says that isn't the way I would with a man?" It was not. Or. It had never been before. But there was something to it. She had _mostly_ been giving R'lor a hard time for including her in this class, but now that she had it? Well. She would try it.

O'rosin began by looking confused and ended by looking vaguely vacant and panicked, like he was doing too much arithmetic. "....all right." He agreed slowly.

R'fayne's brow knit, slight skepticism shining through. "Sir, we may mimic our dragon, but unless Riamorth is flying a green with his wingtip I doubt Tirraze," his gaze flicked to her in acknowledgment, "is going to be using her hands."

"I wouldn't put it past him," said Tirraze. "Are you worried where I'll be putting my hands?"

R'lor bit back a smile before answering R'fayne. "Female blueriders are a very new phenomenon. I was considering the possibility of Tirraze using what was at hand, so to speak, to penetrate her partner."

}:Oh, that was bad,:{ Kularth said. R'lor had to cough to keep from cracking up.

"Not particularly." R'fayne answered Tirraze. "I'm not going to be on the receiving end of your hands, so I could give a shit about what you do with them. But I'd still like to know what exactly our dragons could make us do. The human element can't vanish completely or they would... go /between/ or something." Leaned back in his chair, he did his best to suppress a smirk. "R'lor, sir. What does Kularth make you do with your hands?"

R'lor arched an eyebrow. "Occasionally, touch people I don't like," he said dryly. "But you're right, we don't _disappear_ into our dragons so much as entwine with them so deeply we become almost one being. Now, every pair is a bit different, and some flights can be more intense than others. Most often, we have little control over what we do during a flight. Which is why, for example, a bronzerider who is uninterested, even repulsed, but the idea of sex with a man will nevertheless have intercourse with a male greenrider if his dragon wins her green. We, as humans, are not making these choices. The dragon decides, the rider complies."

C'rand considered himself lucky. He would only ever be a chaser, and he didn't have a problem with ending up with a male or female greenrider. It was strange, really, that he had always been interested in girls, but hadn't really considered himself interested in boys until he came to the Weyr, and didn't really feel it strongly until he met B'lyse.

That didn't mean that he wasn't a little bit nervous for other reasons, though. He cleared his throat. "Sir, uh, you said Tirraze might not have time to... um... harness up." He coughed again -- that was another concept that he hadn't considered before. "So what kind of prep time are we talking here? Because some things need, um... _prep_. I don't want to hurt anybody..."

B'lyse had been content to pretend that he was not watching Ç'pier of all people interpret this class for him, but when it came to interpreting C'rand talking about... well, _that_, it took more than a little of his energy not to look away.

He wanted to tell C'rand that they could practice together, and he considered piping up with that _just_ to have an excuse to stop staring at Ç'pier's stupid hands, but he wanted to wait and tell him in a much more private setting.

If not for the fact that he could very clearly see how uncomfortable this was making B'lyse, Ç'pier would have been enjoying himself thoroughly-- he had already had to finger spell out several words he never had any occasion to learn to sign. He certainly had not enjoyed it at all when his first class had done this part. Nobody wanted to practice with him anymore.

"This is exactly why practice is important," R'lor told the class. "While riders have limited awareness, they're able to remove their clothes because it's necessary. But it isn't a fully conscious process. You will have moments, like little flickers, where you have a bit more awareness. Like briefly surfacing from water. The flightrooms are stocked with oil, and you need to use that moment of surfacing to prepare your partner and yourself."

}: We don't need to practice this until you're ready, :{ Genireth said gently to O'dyn, who was pretty much sitting through this lecture trying not to cover his ears because why was everyone talking about sex, why was everyone so fascinated with sex, could they talk about something else please, anything else, not sex, how about books, could they talk about books or cute animals, something else, anything else??

O'rosin flipped back through his poorly written notes, which up until this point had mostly been what he could parse out about the draconic logistics. "Wait, why do we need oil when the dragons are in the air?"

A harsh, barely covered snort came from R'fayne's direction. He wasn't about to touch that question with a hot flamethrower, not when R'lor could have the, ah, pleasure.

Tirraze and Ç'pier turned to watch what R'lor would say. Tirraze hid her smile, but Ç'pier did not. B'lyse would also have looked to R'lor for his explanation, but he would not catch everything unless he was watching Ç'pier's interpretation.

R'lor was once again angry at the lack of education in the Holds. He was glad O'rosin asked, though, as he likely wasn't the only one wondering. "Because anal sex requires lubrication unless you want it to be very unpleasant for your partner. I have instruction booklets I'll pass to each of you at the end of class."

B'lyse signed something to Ç'pier, who relayed the question to R'lor.

"Will they be fully illustrated?"

"There will be some illustrations of key points," R'lor said. "There are more in-depth books available in the Weyr library."

For once, this was a discussion about books that did _not_ excite O'dyn.

With no need for illustration, R'fayne lead with a new concern, tone shifting into serious. "What happens if for some reason a greenrider lacks experience and _doesn't_ practice prior to their flight? Won't they think we're attacking them? If we only get flickers of ourselves to make choices, how will we know if we're actually harming them?" And what were they supposed to do with dragonlust clouding the entire picture.

"The greenriders are getting a similar lecture right now." The Weyrlingmaster gave them all a serious look. "If someone goes into a flight unprepared there can be serious consequences. You can harm your partner, you could both panic and cause your lifemates distress. Your dragon could panic and injure himself or others. The worst case is that a dragon could be lost /between/."

R'fayne frowned thoughtfully. "Right. So what do we do? Just 'don't panic'?"

"If someone is uncomfortable enough with the idea of sex that they're willing to endanger their dragon, there isn't that much you can do," R'lor said. "Be as considerate as you're able, use those moments of greater clarity to prepare them as best you can. Try to ease their panic." He didn't want anything like that happening. "I'll do my best to ensure your greenrider classmates _don't_ put themselves, or you, into that kind of situation."

C'rand chewed on that thoughtfully for a moment. "Sir? What about after? I mean... what's the etiquette for these things? Is it rude to just get up and leave, or is it rude to hang around...? What do people usually expect?"

"You must at least thank them for the flight," the Weyrlingmaster said. "Always be polite. You can leave then if you have no further interest, but you can stay for another round if you're both inclined."

This was turning out to be the best birthing-day. A pamphlet that he could barely read and a too-explicit talk from the Weyrlingmaster. O'rosin slid down in his chair as the conversation continued and breezed past his questions. It didn't prevent him from speaking up again, though. "What about weyrmates? Their dragons don't always fly each other, right? If they even can?"

R'lor shook his head. "A dragon has their own preferences."

"How does that work? Nobody cares? No one gets jealous or upset?" Underneath the embarrassment, he was still baffled.

"Some raised outside the Weyr do have issues," R'lor said. "That's part of my lecture for tomorrow, acually -- dealing with the emotions after a flight. A weyrmate should never be jealous if you win someone else's flight. And they also should not have any problem if you decide to stay in the flightroom a bit longer afterward. Emotions are still high and you might get caught up in the moment. It is not "cheating"."

Once he had seen Ç'pier's interpretation, B'lyse actually stood up.

"Wait." He walked up the aisle to the front and looked R'lor in the eye. He could not have said what Ç'pier signed he said. He was jealous, and he was trying to set him up for failure with C'rand.

"Say what you said again, slow. Please."

R'lor glanced at C'pier, wondering if he'd interpreted wrong. "A weyrmate should never be jealous if you win someone else's flight," R'lor said slowly. He knew a few signs but not anything that equipped him for this conversation. "Staying after with your flight partner is also not cheating." Then he glanced at C'rand before focusing back on B'lyse. "You can speak with me after class if you'd like to have a deeper discussion." Just when he'd been thinking that C'rand and B'lyse might be the least of his worries when it came to flights.

B'lyse relaxed with obvious relief. That _had_ been what he said. He glanced at Ç'pier, who shrugged, and then he went back to sit down.

"Thank you, sir." Obviously, he and C'rand were never going to win one another's flights. But they could always lose together.

"Are there any other questions?" The Weyrlingmaster asked. "As I said, we'll go more in depth tomorrow about handling emotions in the aftermath of a flight. And if you'd like to have a private discussion, my door is open."

O'rosin shook his head silently and slowly raised his notebook over his face.
