Description: Chioneth rises for the second time at DFW.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 3, day 9 of Turn 8
Chioneth had been positively vicious as of late, refusing to lay with
even her favorite bronze, Mnoranth, when he would come to visit. The
Senior Queen spent most of her time wrapped about the Star Stones,
hissing and glaring defiantly at any of the "outsider" males that the
watchdragon welcomed in to the Weyr.
The effect on Saibra was that of being wrung out like a dish rag.
Irritable would be the nicest way to describe the Weyrwoman's mood of
late, as she battled to maintain normalcy despite her lifemate's
volatile temper.
"She's never been this difficult to deal with." Saibra grumped to
R'enh as she paced in her weyr. Saibra had always been proud of the
lady-like demeanor her gold possessed, as opposed to those golds who
seemed childish or bratty.
A loud dragonic snarl ripped through the quiet of the Weyrbowl.
**That's no lady out there today.**
"I just wish she would -" Saibra froze midstep, her hand flying to her
stomach. "She's going to the Feeding Pens!" The Weyrwoman tore from
from her weyr, pushing a drudge out of the way as she raced to the
pens to control her dragon's murderous rage.
"I know," R'enh said and charged after her. Mnoranth was already
blooding his second kill and watching Chioneth possessively. **Do
it,** R'enh thought at him. For the first time in his life R'enh
wanted this so badly he could almost taste the blood as it pumped into
his lifemate's mouth.
It was half a candlemark until Cyan's drills were scheduled to start.
Rogueth was on his weyrledge watching the activity in the bowl. He'd
been watching the Senior Queen all day, seeing her deep glow and waiting
for the moment when she left. When he saw Chioneth launch herself, he
took a moment to admire the litheness of her form, the way she moved.
What a prize she was. He beat his own wings and went for the feeding
pens, knowing he would need hot blood for this flight.
K'ran was in his office reviewing the formation he wanted to use. Then
he felt a shudder rush through him, heard a dragon scream outside and a
bellow of answer. **Rogueth-** he started. This wasn't Genna, who he
cared for, a flight that he wanted to win as a rider.
}:I chase her. She will be mine.:{ Rogueth stated confidently. }:You
have led Cyan well. We can lead this Weyr well!:{
This was Saibra, and the outcome of this flight would lead to a
Weyrleadership. Was he ready for that? His dragon clearly thought they
were. Sighing, he pushed away from the desk, heading for the inevitable
ending point of the flight cots.
The bronze landed at the pens and snapped a wherry's neck, blooding it.
His eyes whirled rapidly as he stared at Chioneth, willing the senior
gold to notice him. He was strong and loyal. He wanted this.
Whatever Weyr a rider was based at, there were some things that were always
familiar. Like the call of a gold rising to mate, and the answering bellows
of her bronze, and sometimes brown suitors. Those calls, at the start at
least would encourage other to join in. And one of those riders was K'reyel,
even as his Erdenth began to follow the other dragons, leaving his rider to
follow him to the feeding pens.
That was the point at which he realised that it was Saibra and Chioneth.
}:Mine,:{ Erdenth told him. }:I will chase her, and show her we can both fly
her well, and lead this Weyr well.:{
Nirreth was already there and blooding his kills to get the energy
needed for a goldflight when G'nir jogged to join him. He noticed the
unfamiliar bronze instantly and that worried him. He knew Saibra had
been spending time with bronzerider from Dolphin Cove. Add to it the
way the two of them barely spoke outside wing business, it didn't bode
well for G'nir. He felt a cold grip of fear in his stomach. It was all
too familiar, he felt it everytime the Senior Gold Rose. Was his time
as Weyrleader over now or would it continue for the next half Turn?
**Do it, win her,** he encouraged Nirreth. Not that the bronze needed
any more encouragement.
Nirreth roared his intentions loudly, his eyes on the glowing Chioneth.
Kenirath was quick to join the waiting crowd of males as they watched
Chioneth blood under kills under the strict orders of her rider.
}:She's glorious.:{ The bronze informed his rider as he dug his talons
into his rock ledge, ready to spring into the air as soon as she was
ready.
**Good luck.** D'kere wished his dragon as he left his papers strewed
on his desk and left his office. Kenirath had caught Lissath, maybe he
could pull it off and catch the wily Senior Queen too.
Chioneth glared at the males surrounding her, curling her lips back to
reveal blood stained teeth that she bared at them with a hiss. Angry,
scarlet eyes whirled rapidly beneath the arched ridges of her eye
sockets, and when she finally tossed aside the limp carcass of the
herdbeast in her clutch, Saibra had to take a step back to brace
herself against the heady rush that washed over her as she joined
minds completely with her Queen.
}:Freedom!:{ Chioneth crowed as she rocketed skyward, the wind
whistling against her hide as she continued to rise.
}:I will follow,:{ Erdenth bellowed as he prepared himself to follow,
springing into the air, watching, waiting for Chioneth to set the direction.
}: Be mine again! :{ Nirreth called out and launched himself to the
air. He spread his wings, showing off.
Rogueth leapt into the sky. He wasn't the last bronze off the ground,
but he was one of the later ones, finding himself in the middle of the
pack. It wasn't as bad as it could be - he was small and lithe, and
could easily find his way out of the pack. And then he'd see if he
could snag Chioneth while she was distracted by one of the bigger
bronzes.
Mnoranth had been one of the first off the mark but knew he was an
outsider so he was biding his time on the outside of the pack. He'd
caught gold before but he didn't know these bronzes and they didn't
know him. He was an interloper no matter how well he might know the
gold they were all chasing.
}:She's mine!:{ Kenirath trumpeted to the other males brashly as he
launched himself after the Queen.
Chioneth barely heard the pathetic cries of the puny males behind her
as she listened to the pounding rhythm of her blood, which was singing
through her veins. The world below her looked vibrant and inviting,
and it all belonged to her!
When an agile brown flew up too close and interrupted Chioneth's
thrill of flying she snarled at him and rammed him with one golden
shoulder. }:Get away from me!:{ She screeched, using her much longer
wingspan to put distance between them. }:I will not be caught that
easily! I will not submit!:{ There would be no pathetic submission on
her behalf where she "invited" some male to twine necks with her.
}:You will have to catch me to prove you are worthy.:{ She dared the
others as she stretched her neck upwards and flew higher.
}:I will show that, and more,:{ Erdenth called, as he beat his wings to
chase higher.
A brown moved to avoid a bronze and left an opening. Rogueth folded
his wings and dropped down through it. Then he was finally free from
the pack. He quickly twisted to avoid the biggest group of the others,
then made up for the drop in altitude by streaking upwards towards
Chioneth in a burst of speed. }:Choose me, I am fast and I am
cunning!:{
}: Choose me! You know I'm the best! :{ Nirreth appealed to her. He
twisted, ducking another bronze and pushed himself to the front line
of the chasers. His soared after Chioneth's glowing figure, fire
burning in his hearth.
Chioneth ignored all of their pleasantries, unwilling to hear them.
She refused to choose, they would have to fight for her if they wanted
to win! Ducking beneath a clumsy old bronze whose neck was beginning
to gray, Chioneth snarled at him }:Get out of here, old man, if you
can't keep up!:{
On the ground Saibra swayed, her hands going to her pounding temples.
Chioneth had never been like this before and it was taxing.
Rogueth streaked past the same bronze Chioneth had just dismissed,
only to find the way blocked by a few bigger bronzes who were hot on
her tail. He folded his wings and darted through a small gap and did a
long spiral that brought him between some of those chasers and
Chioneth.
Putting on an extra burst of speed, he pulled up until his nose was
right by her tail. He was faster and able to trick the bigger bronzes.
Would she see that he was worthy? Rogueth burned with the need to
catch the queen and twine with her.
Mnoranth took the place of an unlucky bronze by supreme effort of will
and pushed in a diagonal to cut off another whose nose was nearly on
Chioneth's tail. Others were fading yet he still felt strong. His
stamina was coming near it's end like the others but he wanted to be
right there with her when she chose. }:Beautiful Chioneth, pick me:{
he crooned. He knew she would choose soon. He wanted her and his
wanted hers.
}:I will give you everything you need,:{ Erdenth told Chioneth, even as he
beat his wings harder, to gain height and climb around another bronze in an
attempt to position himself alongside her. }:Everything, and more.:{
Chioneth wasn't listening to any of them, she was once again reveling
in the thrill of flight. Her strength was beginning to flag, but her
anger fueled her. She didn't want _any_ of these pathetic males! Just
listen to them beg! Growling with disgust, Chioneth began climbing in
altitude again. She would _force_ one of them to step up and catch
her!
The Senior Queen's plan worked, only not as she had expected. A
cunning, wily bronze must have thought ahead and figured out what her
strategy would be because in her haste to climb higher into the air
she had allowed her guard to drop, and someone had snuck up on her.
With a cry of outrage Chioneth bellowed and tried to free herself of
the strong neck that twined about her, and the talons that latched
onto her to pull her in to his vice-like grip.
On the ground far below, Saibra found herself sufficiently caught as
well as a pair of masculine arms grabbed her up and pulled her toward
the bed in the flight room.
