Physical Description of Persona:
Quilya stands about 5' 2". She has a round, somewhat child-like face, with large brown eyes and a small nose and mouth. Her hair is thick, brown and hangs nearly to her waist. Her build is healthy, and, while not overweight, definitely not sparse. Full hips and large breasts seem to be even more emphasized on her small frame. Her feet and hands are small. She dresses conservatively, usually in loose fitting clothing that de-emphasizes her otherwise noticeable figure. She typically wears her hair in a neat, single braid.
Emotional Description of Persona:
Quilya is a quietly determined sort of person. She is typically polite and unassuming, and strives to conduct herself in a composed and responsible manner, especially when it comes to her working environment. However, she is not easily swayed of her convictions, and has a strong resolve when it comes to accomplishing something that she sets out to do. She is patient and willing to bide her time as needed, but rarely ever lets go of a goal.
She takes her work extremely seriously, and reacts poorly to anybody who devalues her contributions to the healercraft. It is her earnest desire to walk the tables and become a fully fledged journeywoman, and she invests a lot of time and devotion to this end.
Outside of work, she is friendly and does not shun social contact, though she is seldom the first person to speak in a crowded room. She is approachable, and is not shy, though she is cautious about romantic activities, due partly to her upbringing and the holdbred ideals of male and female relationships, and party to the fact that men often too easy take interest in her on a solely physical basis.
History of Persona:
Quilya was the younger of two daughters born to Falquil and Nayama, residents of Amber Hills Hold. Falquil was a farmer, and worked to grow crops in the Hold's fields, while Nayama kept the home and raised Quilya and her older sister, Amafal. Family life was strict, but not unloving. There was always much work to be done, and not much time for idle pursuits.
When Amafal came of age, she was quickly married to the son of one of Falquil's friends and, soon after, became pregnant with her first baby. After Ama's first child, a son, was born, she found herself soon pregnant with another. This was, of course, the reasonable expectation of a healthy young woman, and Quilya's mother repeatedly told her that she could look forward to the same when she was married in a few turns' time.
When Ama's second, a girl, was born, Quilya found herself spending a lot of time at the cottage of Ama and her husband in order to help with the demands of two small children. At about three months of age, both Ama and her daughter came down with a fever, and Quilya found herself as the primary caretaker of Ama's son during the day, while his father worked.
Quilya was not adverse to children, but soon found herself feeling constrained by the life of childrearing. The thought of doing only that for the remainder of her young life was crushing. She knew that she had more to offer, but had no outlet for such, as the role of a young woman in the Hold was clearly spelled out.
Over the course of the next several sevendays, Ama and her daughter were frequently visited by a healer, Harro, who was serving a short-term assignment at the Hold from the Healer Hall. Quilya would assist him as he tended to Ama and the baby, and the two struck up a friendship of sorts. Eventually, Quilya was comfortable enough to speak to him, and confided in Harro her despair at having no future other than to produce and raise children.
Harro, a somewhat progressive thinker, sympathized with her plight and, finally, offered to write a letter of recommendation for her, should she wish to undertake the journey to Dragonsfall Weyr. Should she be able to find passage to the weyr, he was confident that he could secure her a chance at an apprenticeship with the weyrhealers.
It took Quilya over two sevendays to make her decision, but she finally came to the conclusion that she would prefer to chance her fate as a runaway, then to remain with her family and face a certain future that she did not want. She waited until Ama and her daughter had fully recovered, and then made a bargain with the next trade caravan that came through and slipped away.
It was a long journey to the weyr, and, once there, it was no small task to convince the weyrhealers of her competency and the validity of her recommendation, but her persistence paid off, and she was granted an apprenticeship, despite being 15 turns of age, and somewhat older than was typically accepted.
