Persona Profile: Branalie (Inactive)

Writer: Bree

Name: Branalie
Age: 46
Birthday: m7 d20
Rank: Senior Journeyman Healer
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Craft: Healer
Craft Rank: Senior Journeyman
Speciality: Optometry

Physical Description of Persona:
Branalie is of average height and build, though her terrible taste in clothing tends to make her look frumpy and older than she really is. Her brown hair is long through carelessness more than anything else, and she tends to pull it back without much consideration for exactly how it looks. Her eyes are a startlingly bright blue, though she often hides them behind not-entirely-necessary reading lenses, thinking it might help her avoid unwanted male attention.

More than one person has endeavored to take Branalie under their wing and find the beautiful woman everyone assumes is hiding underneath her frumpy exterior. What no one seems to understand is that she's perfectly happy the way she is, and if she _wanted_ to look differently, she would. So far, no attempted makeovers have managed to stick.

Emotional Description of Persona:
In spite of her attempt to project a "no nonsense" attitude, Branalie isn't as confident as she seems. Though she's spent twenty turns in the Weyr, she spent seventeen of them married, insulating her somewhat from some of the more shocking differences between Hold and Weyr.

Now that she's getting past her husband's death, she's starting to realize that romance is a lot more complicated in the Weyr--and that she's terribly naïve for someone nearing forty turns.

History of Persona:
Branalie grew up in a small cothold a half candlemark's ride from the Smith Hall. When she was thirteen, her brother was an apprentice there, and on one of her many visits, she met Wental, a young journeyman who had already shown amazing potential in the fine art of glasssmithing.

In spite of the difference in their ages, by fifteen Branalie had developed a full blown crush on Wental. In return, he enjoyed her quick wit and how much she believed in his goal: to recover some of the knowledge that was lost during the plague. His particular pet project was the creation of glasses used to help people with failing eyesight.

Their official courtship began after Branalie's sixteenth birthingday, and her parents were thrilled at the attention of a man who was so highly thought of by his peers. They might not have been so thrilled if they'd known Wental's real plan: to bring Branalie to the Weyr with him so that they could work together on his favorite project without having to hide her involvement.

They were married within the turn, and on their way to River Bluff Weyrhold a month later. Branalie undertook to learn everything she could from the healers about eyes and eyesight, delving into records and spending months on end in research.

Together, Branalie and Wental worked out a better system for testing eyesight and creating eyeglasses than had been seen since before the plague. Their success did not made them famous--eyeglasses were hardly Pern's most sought after commodity--but they were pleased with their accomplishment.

Wental's death from heart-failure at forty-nine was a terrible shock to Branalie, but she continued his work with Wental's two favorite journeymen, and has spent most of the last three turns doing her best to keep his dream alive.
