Physical Description of Persona:
Bearded and muscled, K’thyr stands about 5’9, giving the overall impression of stocky at first glance. His dark brown eyes and matching dark hair are lightened by his smile and rich baritone voice, rapidly turning a man who usually appears to be intensely brooding into the charismatic center of a room. There’s a silvering of Threadscars along his left shoulder and upper back. His favorite colors are earth tones. He wears a simple copper bracelet on his right wrist.
Emotional Description of Persona:
K’thyr values honor and integrity and wears those values like a mantle around his muscled shoulders. He’s a man of tradition, mostly because he believes that Turns of tradition have purified them of iniquities, so it takes him a while to be swayed otherwise. He resists change but also resists being a changebringer. He’s a humble man who wants simple joys in life only because he’s learned how fleeting that joy is. Leave him to happily be.
Because of this, K’thyr is someone who feels deeply. Wins, losses, he will openly celebrate or weep. This gives him an intensity that unsettles some but those that know him (and themselves) find it refreshing in its honest way. They know that K’thyr won’t be lying to them when he speaks his heart. His favorite thing in the world is to spend time with his children.
Despite having a moral compass that points north, K’thyr does still make bad decisions, usually because of drunken peer pressure or because he allows his emotions to get hijacked. His scars run childhood deep but his adult regrets are few. He does try to improve himself when it comes to his biases but some ways of thinking are still hard to dislodge.
History of Persona:
“You cannot change how it started, but you can change how it ends,” is a mantra that follows K’thyr. Born Kytherian at a plague-decimated Cloud Stone cothold, he was aware very early on that something awful had happened in his small home. Everyone moved with care, as though life was too fragile, as though they feared it would be gone the next day. It wasn’t until Kytherian was nearly ten that he understood the gravity of the past but it took that weight being bundled with current tragedy in order to stick.
Kytherian’s father had remarried before he was born, which meant that he had one elder half-sibling, the last survivor of the previous plague-riven family. Kytherian had two younger siblings but one of them drowned just before he turned ten. This event, combined with the way the adults around him moved with such weight taught Kytherian two things: living was dangerous, life was fleeting.
And he had to get out of that cothold.
At the age of thirteen, Kytherian begged to be sent to Healer Hall. He had a temperament for taking care of others -- plenty of chances to do so in his childhood -- and had been helping the only remaining person with healercraft knowledge in the cothold. Why not him? He could earn his knots and return to be stationed there! That was the spirited argument he made. But still, he left his home under heated words that could not be taken back.
For Turns, Kytherian didn’t care about the circumstances of his arrival at Healer Hall. He had what he wanted. And he would have been happy there had he not accompanied one of the journeymen to the Weyr one day and met the dragons. They were to be there for only a sevenday but for Kytherian, the stay became longer, as one of the dragons took sharp interest in him. In the end, he had to borrow an old Candidate robe because the Hatching came.
One Hatching was all he needed for Eometh to find him.
Now K’thyr, his life took a completely new, exciting course. Weyrlinghood was a dizzying rush, as K’thyr now also had to learn how to navigate both a baby dragon and adjusting to Weyrlife. That weyrling class was tight-knit -- something that grounded K’thyr in all of the chaos. In bright contrast to his childhood, the Weyr was full of color and life. Thread was still a far off menace but the Weyr was preparing for it. K’thyr put his healer skills to a new slant after graduating -- dragonhealer -- believing that he could somehow be the force that could keep it that way if he applied himself.
Long before Thread returned, K’thyr had achieved his seniority as a journeyman, as well as three children that he adored. How he wished that such an idyllic life could continue but Thread returned and with it, K’thyr entered a crucible of self, with Eometh and his children acting as the grounding forces as K’thyr mended the aerial defenders of Pern. The loss of K’thyr’s weyrmate during the seventh Turn of the Pass further shook K’thyr’s foundations. He threw himself into his craft, his friends, and his children.
Attaining his mastery knots felt like a hollow victory, given the loss of so many, but it was still a milestone he made sure to celebrate. When Turn 12 introduced an inexperienced Weyrleader (and all of the casualties that came with it), K’thyr held on to dogged hope that better days were ahead.
Dragon's Name: Eometh
Dragon's Age: 24
Dragon's Hatching Date: m13 d1
Dragon's Colour: Brown
Description of Dragon:
A dark klah brown to match his rider’s coloring, Eometh is a stolid dragon, stocky in shoulder but long in tail. Where his left wing connects to his torso shows evidence of Threadscarring, also matching his rider’s scars.
Eometh is a pea-in-a-pod match for K’thyr. He is grounded, resilient, unflappable. No matter what comes their way, Eometh is a solid believer that they will handle it together.
