Physical Description of Persona:
K’valdran cuts a commanding figure with or without his rank knots. Tall and broad-shouldered, he takes up space with the grace and ease of one who has earned the right to be there-- wherever There is. It’s really his confidence that draws attention, but his looks help. It’s like he stepped off the covers of a Printer Hall serial, one read furtively by hold-wives between laundry and disappointments. Classically handsome in an aquiline sort of way, he has a warm olive complexion and thick black curls. Now in his mid-forties, his temples and beard have begun to streak with silver, giving him a more mature, distinguished air. He looks experienced and sure-- and he sounds it, his voice a rich, low baritone.
He is a master of presentation. Everything about his well-tailored clothes and neat grooming speaks of a certain urbane refinement. Only the intensity of his dark gaze and a thin scar down his right cheek hint at a wilder nature.
Emotional Description of Persona:
There is something innately compelling about K’valdran’s manner: the easy laugh, the attractive warmth of his attention, the focused heat of his gaze. He has an intoxicating gift for making anyone feel like the center of the world-- until he is gone, and they realize the center was him all along.
A charismatic people person, K’valdran is a silken charmer who has taken a genuine liking and interest in people and matured it into a deep understanding for the way they work. He has an excellent intuition for what people want, be it respect, love, attention or sympathy. He knows how to provide it--or withhold it--as it suits him.
Usually what suits him is what suits the Weyr. The scion of a long line of dragonriders, K’valdran was raised on stories of duty and glory. Now, time and experience have tempered his youthful idealism into a deep pragmatism. He can give a rousing speech about honor and courage one moment and then send an injured rider to fly point the next. Not because he lacks compassion-- but because he believes the Weyr comes first.
Calm, controlled, collected, he has the confidence of someone utterly sure of their abilities and the self-worth of someone who _knows_ they’re a part of greatness-- perhaps his real gift is making others think that too.
History of Persona:
K’valdran was the seventeenth child--and the eighth son--of K'valdur, an elderly bronzerider of formidable reputation. Once a beloved Lord Weyrholder, K'valdur had served his Weyrhold with distinction in his youth, but as he and his bronze aged, he eventually lost the Lordship. For his service, he was given a small holding within Dragonsfall territory to retire to with his many weyrmates and children.
And so K’valdran was raised in two worlds. From spring through fall, he was out on the family's farm, working as any other Pernese lad might, but every winter, they returned to take shelter in the Weyrhold Proper. There, for a season, his father made sure he lived among dragons and was taught the songs of their glory-- of a time when they were saviors, not couriers; legends, not laborers. He learned to take great pride in his heritage, in the fact he was _weyrfolk_, not holder, no matter how similar their lives may seem during that peaceful age.
Naturally he claimed his birthright and stood for the first clutch he could-- but he walked away alone and disappointed. Clutches being as rare and as small as they were, K'valdran soon accepted that he needed a more secure way forward. If he could not count on being a dragonrider, he fought to become a Harper instead, reasoning that it would take him the closest anyone of the modern era could get to the legends of old. While his motives were a selfish sense of supremacy, it wasn't long before he fell into something more.
His familial connections secured him an apprenticeship with the Weyrharper, and at his side, K'valdran learned that Thread might not be as vanquished as once thought. For Turns he was put to work copying down old oral traditions, digging through dusty archives, helping his master hunt out any and all hallmarks of an impending Pass, all the while growing more and more convinced that their impossible thesis was correct: AIVAS had failed.
For them, the final proof came in 1190, when Dragonsfall’s queen laid a massive clutch of over forty eggs. K'valdran was left standing again, more devastated than before. Over his apprenticeship, his initial childish motivation to study weyr history (to lord his heritage over his holder neighbors) had matured into a deep respect for the duty and purpose of the weyrs. Convinced to his core that Thread was soon returning, that dragons were about to be more than a farming or transport convenience, it was twice as hard to walk away without one.
He nearly missed standing for his last clutch. It was a tense question of if the eggs would harden and hatch before his birthingday or not. They did. K'valdran walked away with bronze Karcalanth and a new purpose in life.
He spent the next decade spreading word about the threat of Thread and rising through weyr ranks, making it to wingleader around the time the Northern Weyrs were being reopened. K'valdran was tapped to be one of the bronzeriders sent to establish Fort Weyr, one of the greatest honors of his career. He would not have left Dragonsfall for anything less than the First Weyr and he served there as a wingleader, and eventually a few Turns as Weyrleader.
Late T12 he made the hard decision to return to Dragonsfall after hearing about the Teal Wing Tragedy and concerning talk about the recent Holdless refugees.

Description of Dragon:
(kar-KAL-lanth)
A ruddy reddish bronze, Karcalanth is completely average in size and build, but you would never know it from listening to him. He carries himself with the grace of a predator, the gravitas of a lord, and the utter conviction that he and His know best and are the best. His iron confidence makes him a fantastic anchor or relay point in Threadfall, as solid and dependable as can be.
