Persona Profile: Xagrus

Writer: Hunter

Name: Xagrus
Pronunciation: ZAG-roos
Age: 23
Birthday: m10 d1
Rank: Tavern Guard
Location: Vintner Hall, Amber Hills Hold

Physical Description of Persona:
Xagrus is a broad-shouldered young man, with heavy arms and a stance that suggests he's always half-braced for a blow that never comes. He shares his father Xu’ma’s signature black curls, though his are tighter and less tended, hanging with casual disregard. His complexion is a lighter echo of his father’s deep brown, bearing a coppery hue burnished by sun and wind, the mark of someone long accustomed to the outdoors. Pale blue eyes, bleached of the vivid fire his siblings inherited, lend his face a colder, distant edge. His facial hair is surprisingly bountiful and, despite the occasional trim, makes him look deceptively older. There’s something guarded in the way he holds himself, expression flat, voice low, as though emotion costs too much to show.

Emotional Description of Persona:
Xagrus is a study in suppressed disappointment. Once hopeful, now embittered, he wears the weight of unmet expectation like a second skin. He’s quiet, reserved, and prone to long silences, but that stillness masks a simmering resentment: at dragons, at the Weyr, and ultimately at his own family for fitting into lives he never could. Though not overtly cruel, he’s grown increasingly cynical, prone to veiled sarcasm and sharp, surgical comments that land with more precision than volume.

He does not like being underestimated and despises being pitied. He trusts slowly, if at all. While not a liar, he’s careful with the truth, and even more careful with his motivations.

History of Persona:
Born the second eldest of Xu’ma’s children, Xagrus grew up under the long shadow of expectations. He stood on the Hatching Sands again and again, each time walking away unchanged, watching younger Candidates Impress, watching his own siblings grow into their crafts and ambitions. He tried the forge under his uncle Xouga but lacked the skill or temperament to excel, eventually drifting into guard training instead, first for practical reasons then as a way to escape the dragons entirely.

Each turn that passed without a dragon choosing him chipped away at something inside him. By the time he aged out at twenty one he was already halfway gone, cut off from the Weyr’s culture, resentful of its joy, and unwilling to pretend he still belonged. The Vintner Hall hired him soon after for guard duty, and though it’s work he can do, it’s not something he takes any particular pride in.

Now at twenty two, Xagrus is still trying to reconcile who he is with who he thought he’d become. And though he has left the Weyr behind, its memories haunt him: flickers of dragons overhead, laughter in the distance, and a name that wasn’t meant to be.

Pets

Grim, Runner: aged 9, born m3 d24
Grim is aptly named. She’s all hard eyes and harder hooves with a temper as ornery as a watchwher woken up at noon. In winter her coat deepens to a flat, sooty black, but come summer the sun bleaches her hide and mane into a mottled liver chestnut, dapples emerging along her flanks like bruises. There is bulk to her frame, thicker through the shoulders and haunches than a racing runner, with the stubborn strength of draft blood showing in her feathered fetlocks and sure, deliberate gait. No one would ever call her graceful but she can haul a man and his gear for hours without complaint, unless she _does_ complain, in which case her teeth come first.

Xagrus bought Grim with the last of his Weyr wages, a lopsided deal made easier by the seller's bruised arm and exasperated curses. She doesn’t like strangers. Or men. Or reins. But somehow she tolerates him, if barely. Maybe it was his sour mood, or the quiet way he approached her with none of the false sweetness other handlers tried. Whatever the reason, Grim tolerates Xagrus well enough to follow him, ears pinned but obedient, through rocky trails and storm-wet fields. She bites anyone else who comes too close, and more than once has turned her rump on an overeager stablehand. In her own disagreeable way she suits him perfectly.
