Description: They sit down and discuss the situation at Dragonsfall.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 7, day 16 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Hygalia, Teseada, G'nir, N'vanik
After they went over the usual greetings, pleasantries, and
introductions, Rhosyn waited until K'sedel was finished talking over
some of the rider transfers. When he was done, she cleared her throat
and couldn't believe what she was about to say. It had to be said,
though. They needed to know. It would be all over the south soon
enough anyway. Besides that, they flew with Dragonsfall so it was even
more important. "Everyone, you may have heard or you may not, but soon
Dragonsfall will be without a senior queen." The look on her face said
she was angry and did not like sharing that bit of news.
Lenala turned her face to look Rhosyn. Deep down she wondered why Rhosyn
cared. It was Dragonsfall's problem, not theirs.
The Weyrleader knew enough to not try to calm Rhosyn down. "A new northern
Weyr is to open, and Hygalia has volunteered to go as the Weyrwoman, they
are asking for volunteers to fill out the ranks there. So, we can either
talk about this now, or anyone else can see me afterwards."
J'ren's brow furrowed with his frown and his arms crossed over his
chest. She was Weyrwoman, why would a Weyrwoman want to leave her
Weyr? Surely there was more to it than a mere need for someone at the
new one. What sort of politics had driven her to that decision? He
had to admit, the idea of the new Weyr was tempting. It might afford
opportunities - opportunities that had been snatched away from him at
his current Weyr.
K'lvin's eyebrows lifted at the news. He had only recently transferred
from Dragonsfall. **Another one?** Was his thought. The other piece
of information from the Weyrleader was interesting but not tempting to
K'lvin. Being a Wingleader was more than enough responsibility for
him.
She hoped they all understood if any of River Bluff's riders went, she
would not be a happy person. Not at all. Rhosyn would hold her Weyr
together, come Thread or Flood. "So, it is our responsibility to let
our riders know of this opportunity although I would hope everyone
understands they are needed here. Furthermore, some of Dragonsfall's
leaders are also joining her, I understand." She looked at K'sedel for
confirmation. "This means they may not be flying stable for awhile
while they adjust. Teseada, though young, will be leading the queens'
wing. So when we fly with them over the mountains, I think it's
something to keep in mind."
"Whuh? I don't envy her at all," Lenala sighed. "G'nir's not going? I mean
he has been in the North before," she continued asking.
}:The Weyrwoman is unhappy?:{ Xmrenth asked K'lvin.
**Yes, but that doesn't seem to be unusual here lately. I don't think
any of the leaders here are contemplating leaving.** K'lvin answered
back.
}:Mmmm, I would not leave my sunny ledge to go North. It is very nice
here.:{ Xmrenth was, of course, full of dragon logic.
"Have they already started on a search for a new Weyrwoman?" Most
likely that was the case, but it would be more difficult with a new Weyr.
Still, there might be other goldriders who would prefer the South to the
North. "Or have they had anyone already show interest?" He'd be
surprised if they allowed someone as young as Teseada become Weyrwoman.
"Yes they have. Unfortunately there are very slim pickings so I wish them
the best with that. As far as anyone showing interest, I don't know. G'nir
is handling it of course." Rhosyn would probably find out about the same
time as the rest of Pern did whoever it was.
"It's possible there may be an option from Dolphin Cove, or Far Island,"
K'sedel suggested.
Rhosyn considered that. Meledei at Dolphin Cove was much too young, so
he had to mean Saibra. Cyradis wouldn't leave, she was sure of that.
Saibra she had only met briefly but somehow she didn't see the woman
fitting in at Dragonsfall. Was her ambition worth more to her that
she'd go somewhere she wouldn't like? That wasn't Rhosyn's problem
however. "So we ask now-are any of you leaving?" She glanced at all of
them in turn, her hazel eyes focusing with only the intensity she
could produce. If any of them went, she would feel as if they were
leaving her. Deep down she knew that it wasn't personal, but she
needed them now. She needed her Weyr to remain stable when nothing
else was.
Was she really asking that question? Shards, they'd just been told
about the opportunity. It wasn't as if she'd given them the chance to
really_think_ about whether or not they should take the chance or if
they preferred to stay. "With all due respect, Weyrwoman, it's rather
early to ask that question."
"It's not a split second decision." K'lvin said in agreement with his
Wingsecond.
In her mind it was. The fact that anyone was showing hesitation was
causing alarm bells. Rhosyn didn't like the sound of that, not at all.
Sitting back in her chair, she watched the both of them. "No it's not
a split second decision. However, if you were really thinking of
leaving your Weyr I would have hoped you would have already made a
decision or left by now. Not decided, on a whim, to go to some
northern Weyr while the Pass is still just starting. But if anyone
wants to go, they can have a chat with K'sedel to see about
transferring." She tried to keep her tone even as if she was
disinterested, but her almost patent irritation and feelings of
betrayal were coming through. First N'vanik left her, now her
bronzeriders were leaving her too? Sharding ingrates.
Maybe it was the way she was accusing them without coming right out
and saying it. Or maybe he was still harbouring disappointment at
being looked over for the Wingleader position, not even a word spoken
to him in regards to it. Whatever it was, J'ren found Rhosyn
particularly annoying. "Again, with all due respect Weyrwoman, this
is something that might make people think about leaving when they
didn't even have an inkling about doing so before. For instance,
Hygalia probably never considered leaving her Weyr until this news
came. Granted, she may have decided to act on it quickly, but most
people will think something like that through before acting up on it.
Some might not even entertain the idea until after this meeting his
adjourned." Besides, it wasn't as if she had a say in the matter.
Yes, the chat would be with K'sedel, who was strangely silent during
that meeting. Did Rhosyn have him whipped? He hadn't said a word past
announcing that a new Weyr was opening. The man needed to get some
backbone.
K'lvin folded his hands quietly on the table, his face revealing
nothing, but his eyes were glued to the Weyrleader. He wished that
K'sedel would dismiss the meeting already. It was obvious that the
Weyrwoman was going to be unhappy with whomever decided to leave, even
though it was_their_ life and_their_ choice, and it was equally
obvious that everyone in the room wished to have their own time to
ponder the offer that was being presented to them. Personally, K'lvin
knew already that he was going no where, not when he had just moved
his daughter to River Bluff. She was settling in with her foster
mother and he had no wish to disturb that.
There was always tension in the room whenever the Weyrleader and
Weyrwoman were together, and it made K'lvin wonder what sort of work
relationship they had, or if they had one at all.
Lenala looked from face to face. Even she could sense the tension in the
air. She should say or do something to break it, but Faranth knew what that
would be for she didn't.
