Alina

Every so often, especially when they had several new arrivals, Qorri made
sure to have a meeting with her candidates. They went over the rules again,
had question-and-answer time, and discussed chore assignments, and barracks
arrangements. When everyone was assembled, she completed her rules speech,
and then opened the floor for issues. "Allright folks, anyone have any
questions
or concerns?"

Sitting in the rear, Jenackt sat with his arms crossed and head down. He
didn't say anything, just inhaled and waited.

Alina put up her hand. "How do we request extra paper to write letters? And
can the mail move any faster?"

Flita wrinkled her nose at Alina from across the room. How rude!

Xandris leaned back in his chair, a million possibilities racing through his
mind. Wherry. But the inevitable conversation crept in to his
mind: the one he meant to ask Qorri later. How long was it that they /had/
to Stand?

"Hide is just as good as paper, m'dear." Especially for candidate letters.
Qorri herself used hide more than she ever borrowed with paper.
"And easier to come by. If you need more, go to the storage cabinet at the
end of the hall on the west side of the barracks. There's always
a pile there." At the next question, she resisted the impulse to roll her
eyes. **Really?** "The mail is carried by tithe trains, runners, and
sometimes boats. It's only as fast as they can carry it. I can't make things
go any faster."

"Oh." Alina did her best to hide her disappointment. "Thank you, Headwoman."

Letters...he didn't have anyone to write to, not that his writing was very
legible to begin with. Jenackt looked up through his hair at Alina and then
back down. He could have told her about the hides, if she'd asked. Faranth
knew that he used them often enough to practice. He glanced over at Xandris
and noted the questioning in his expression.

Xandris felt someone's eyes upon him and glanced over at Jenackt with a
shrug.

"What- what if we still don't Impress?" Larus stammered from the side of the
room. "When do we have to go home?"

Flita wrinkled her nose, trying not to look at Alina. She could tell that
girl exactly where to put her letters. She couldn't feel compassion for the
girl, but perhaps Alina was finally getting a taste of how she and her
sister had made Flita feel: estranged and alone.

**If you don't Impress they stick you in the barracks and get free work out
of you until they're finished with you, you stupid sod.** Jenackt didn't
lift his head back up, but tightened his arms around his chest. His foot
twitched impatiently.

"The Weyr will always have you as long as you pull your weight as the rest
of us do. There are many who never Impressed that have stayed to be a
crafter or work. You can Stand until you're too old. Then you make the
decision to stay or go." Qorri hoped that was a simple explanation.

Saidrene sat in the back with her chin propped in her hand. She hated coming
to these sorts of things. Her mother was the Weyrwoman's Second, she could
get whatever supplies she needed and didn't have silly questions about the
mail of all things. So she spent the meeting casting glances at Jenackt
instead.

Ciendra tried not to yawn. She had already lived in Weyr several months and
knew the drill. She would had rather been working in the kitchen than
go through this again. It was the drawback back of not Impressing.

"Allright now keep in mind I don't want to hear anything about any of you.
Be on your best behavior and get your chores done. Maybe we can have a
little party if there aren't any infractions in the next month." She might
have
been dangling a fingerroot, but it was what she had. Qorri could of course
provide drinks, food, and sweets.

Saidrene didn't need a reward dangled in front of her to behave, she
had a goldrider mother who would unleash terrifying wrath should she
do anything to bring shame to Saibra's good name. Still, she
appreciated that the Headwoman seemed to actively concerned about the
Candidates' wellbeing.
