"Holder Reven." Leaton had been on his way to meet the man at his
office, but Reven had been spied in the hallway so he hurried his
sister up to catch up to the man. Behind him was a young woman with
golden hair that fell in waves past her shoulders. Clips with clear
jewels pulled the bright tendrils off her face and a matching necklace
adorned her slender neck. Her yes were a deep blue, like the depths
of the ocean and they fell upon Reven, then lowered as she offered a
polite curtsy. "This is my sister who I told you about, Relea."
Reven spun around at the sound of his name, his eyes taking in the
woman that stood beside of Leaton. He remembered his conversation with
the man previously and how he had said he would do his best to help
secure a marriage for the young woman.
**This is why I need a wife. _She_ can deal with this kind of stuff.**
"It's a pleasure to meet you." Reven said clasping one if the lady's
hands between his own.
The girl inclined her head as she accepted the Holder's hand. Her own
was warm and though gentle, her hold was firm. She spoke nothing in
return, however, but glanced to her brother briefly, then let her eyes
move back to Reven.
"She knows how to cook and sew, she's very neat. She'll make someone
a good wife." Leaton's words seemed rehearsed - he'd said that very
same thing to many a man, but always her issue had gotten in the way.
The one man who had been interested had been a worthless boat worker.
Leaton couldn't have that.
Well the girl certainly was not hard on the eyes, on the contrary, she
was quite beautiful.
"So then so then I assume her hearing is the big issue in finding her
a husband?" Reven asked. He was sure there were men out there that
would appreciate a wife who could not talk back, but the idea made his
stomach turn. Indeed, finding a _good_ husband for Relea would be a
challenge.
"It seems to be the case. As soon as they find out about it, all the
deals fall through." And that left Leaton stuck with her. "She can't
hear, but she's capable in other ways."
Reven hated talking about the girl as if she wasn't there but he
didn't know any other way to go about it.
"How does she communicate then? Does she read people's lips?" He wondered.
It was an opening and despite the fact that she knew Leaton wouldn't
like it, Relea took it. She placed a finger on her lips, then pointed
to the Holder before she reached for a stylus that swung at her hip.
"Yes she can, and she can write." Leaton indicated the stylus before
making a short swift motion with both hands. The crossed together
then moved apart with a jerk. Relea responded by letting go of the
stylus, then making a couple of short motions with her own hands.
"And...well, she uses these...signs with her hands, but one would have
to learn them." The girl was given a glare and she looked away from
her brother, her jaw tightening. "Which is not absolutely necessary.
She can communicate fine with the stylus."
Reven's eyebrows lifted, he was.. impressed. This would at least make
it easier when he was trying to tell another man why they should marry
Relea.
"That's good. Are those hand signs hard to learn?" He asked.
"Ah, well, I find them difficult." Leaton gave Reven a rueful look.
"But I suppose with time someone could learn them, especially if
she'll be with them all the time."
Relea didn't see Leaton's lips for she had stopped looking at her
brother. She sighed softly and clasped her hands together to simply
wait out. Perhaps the holder knew of someone already and perhaps she
could be done with her brother for good. She glanced over at the man
who was now in charge of the hold. She hoped that he would find her
someone kind. Someone who could eventually learn to love her and she
him.
"What is she doing currently as far as work goes? Or do you support
her fully?" Reven asked.
"I currently support her fully, though she is the keeper of my cot and
has been since my wife died. When she is married off, I will take
aother wife for myself, but I need to get her married first." Leaton
explained. "I don't want to have to deal with two women at a time."
Relea barely managed to refrain from making a face. She and Joseli
had gotten along just fine. They helped each other, and Joseli had
taken the time to learn her language. It had hit her hard when the
woman came down with a strange illness while halfway through a
pregnancy that would have been Leaton's first child and died, the babe
with her. Of course, she'd been younger then too, not quite of
marrying age, but only by a turn. Leaton had been looking for a man
for her ever since. That had been three turns ago. .
"Allright then, I promise to do my best. I have a few people in mind
that I will talk to in the next few days and then I'll get back to
you." Reven promised.
Relea had been watching Reven closely and her teeth played at her
lower lip. Who would he talk to? Would the men be kind? Would any
of them overlook her deficit and maybe at least try to like her if not
love her? Her eyes met the holder's and held them, searching, trying
to request that he look for those qualities, but she had no voice to
give them. Blue mixed with blue as she wondered what sort of Holder he
was. She didn't know, he was so knew. What kind of effort would he
put into this? Would he simply push her off onto the first person who
agreed, however reluctantly? Or would he truly try to find a good
match?
Finally, Relea lowered her gaze and fell into a polite curtsy just
before her brother gave another bow. "Thank you Holder. I look
forward to hearing from you."
Her brother certainly did, but did she? What did her future hold in
store for her? It was in the hands of this man, and she hoped to
Faranth that all would turn out well.
