N'vanik

She felt it more than heard it and sat up straighter at her desk. She
froze in place for a moment before she got up and walked down the hall
to N'vanik's office. She peeked her head in and saw he was alone.

"Feel it?" she asked. "Can you send the riders to collect our
dignitaries? I'm going to go change." The hum grew and the feeling of
anticipation became stronger.

N'vanik sent orders out through Loseth to the riders assigned pick-up
duty and the Weyr was soon buzzing with activity. This was the third
time he'd attend his own Hatching and there was no sign of it getting
old (although a little voice in his head grumbled that it might be
because it was a different Queen involved each time). It was only a
little less exciting than the first time Loseth had sired a Clutch.

She'd had things ready and staged for days knowing it would happen any
time. So she dressed quickly and then went back down the hallway to
meet up with the Weyrleader so they could appear together while guests
and candidates arrived. This was one time she was not going to push
things and be late.

N'vanik was surprised to see her ready so fast, but then again it was
her own Hatching. In the interest of keeping the peace, he didn't even
point it out. As they made their way to the Hatching Grounds, he said,
"Thanks for inviting Talryne. It's a ... difficult subject, but I
appreciate the thoughtfulness."

"You're welcome," she said. "K'deren is probably already in there."
She put a hand on his arm, "Please let her know she is welcome and has
a place at your side for any event. Now, I believe we have eggs
hatching." She turned to her seat with a smile at her Weyrmate.

K'deren returned the smile, before turning to greet N'vanik. "Well done," he
said. "I'm sure this day is going to go well."

"I hope so," N'vanik said in a light tone before taking another glance
at the eggs. The first of the guests from outside the Weyr started
arriving, and the Hatching Grounds became a flurry of activity.

Corowal arrived alone. He thanked the young dragorider who was his
transport, get rid of his riding jacket, and made his way towards the
Stands. It was slow going, he had to stop by to greet and exhange
plesantries with familiar faces.

Cyradis was familiar with the scene but that didn't make it any less
exciting as dragons flew in and dropped off their passengers, visitors
and weyr residents flooded in and found their seats. Along with all
that the underlying humming of hundreds of dragons. She reached out
and squeezed K'deren's hand with a smile. She knew his daughter was
among the candidates and silently wished him and by extension Rondera
good luck.

Then she turned back just as the first of the stream of candidates
entered and filed toward the sands and the rocking eggs

Corowal found a seat after he had exhanged quick greetings with the
Topaz Sea Hold's young Lady.

The eggs began to rock, and the last few arrivals hurried to their
seats. Nervous and hopeful Candidates stayed a respectful distance
away from the Queen and her eggs, waiting for the first shell to
crack. N'vanik leaned forward in his seat. Any moment now.

Several of the eggs were rocking hard and then it happened. One of
them flew apart and a cheer went up from the crowd.

"Bronze!" Cyradis grinned at N'vanik it was a very good sign for the
clutch. The little one tripped and cried out as he stumbled toward the
candidates. One of the taller boys saw him coming and pulled a smaller
boy out of the way before he could get hurt. But the little bronze
bump into the tall one. "Oh that's the new boy L'cor now."

}:Tonuth has found his.:{

A green hatched, followed by two more. Cheers went up as they found
their lifemates. Then a little blue hatched, wandering around for a
while, getting several Candidates' hopes up. Then he found what he was
looking for, and his new lifemate called out his name. "Cnarith!

When eggs started to crack, Corowal leaned forward, excited. This time he
had personal interest to see who Impressed. When the bronze choose Lecordin,
he just couldn't contain himself. He jumped to his feet. "That's my son!" he
shouted with joy. Afterwards he was bit embarrased about such a impulsive
act.

K'deren glanced at the Lord Holder. The shout of acknowledgment was
unexpected. He then turned his glance to the Weyrleader and Cyradis, how
were they taking this?

Cyradis blinked and turned to stare at the Lord Holder a moment.
"L'cor," well that made sense but she imagined with the roars of the
crowd, his outburst had only been heard by those very near where
Corowal sat. She made a mental note to speak to the man later at the
feast. Her attention was ripped away by the eggs which were now
hatching furiously and several impressions took place at once.

A pair of pretty little greens hatched each making effort to get to
someone on the other side of the other and consequently fouling each
other's wings. One girl stepped forward to help them untangle and got
knocked down for her pains. "Oh that's Malyna," she'd interviewed the
girl only the other day. The other tiny green cried piteously bumping
her small head against the girl... "And she found hers... Cayleryth,"
she supplied the name from Panitath's proud declaration.

The other green fell on her face in front of a nearby girl who stooped
to lovingly help the little one regain her feet. "That's Caitria," she
smiled. She remembered when the girl had come to her for an interview.
Impression turned her face radiant. "Ahh," Cyradis sighed remembering
her own impression. "Isoldyth," she murmured before turning to
N'vanik.

"Did you know Corowal had a son that age," she whispered urgently to
N'vanik. "I thought his eldest was only about twelve turns."

The Weyrleader trusted her memory more than his own. "Me, too. And he
wouldn't let his _oldest_ Stand." Not if he was legitimate. As
interesting as Corowal's outburst was, the activity on the Sands kept
N'vanik's attention.

Another bronze hatched and quickly found his skinny rider. A green, a
brown, another green. It was impossible to keep up with it all.
N'vanik focused on a blue making his clumsy way toward a boy standing
a bit apart from the other Candidates. The boy was watching another
hatchling and the little blue nearly bumped into him before he
noticed. }:Verizoth,:{ Loseth supplied as the new pair made their way
out of the Hatching Grounds.

Corowal sat back to his seat. He was very aware what he had just done,
publicly acknowledged his son. There was no way to take it back, not
when hundreds, if not thousands, people witnessed it. Some of those
people were his own holders. Giving himself a self-ironic grin,
Corowal shrugged his shoulders, what was done was done. Besides, he
was extremely proud of Lecordin..no L'cor. Couldn't hurt to have
bronzerider in a family. His grin turned to a genuinely happy one.
Trust Dinalee to give him a son who could Impress a bronze. He tried
to concentrate to the Hatching, but his eyes kept following L'cor's
progress.

The rest of the hatching hey were down to only a few left on the sands
and pairs were filing off to the pails of meat held for them. Another
pair of blues stumbled across the sands. Panitath crooned
encouragement to each of her little hatchlings. One of the boys surged
forward and must have tripped on something because he fell flat on his
face. One of the blues butted into him and Cyradis chuckled as he
scrambled back to his feet. "Poor Pawtinath thinks his C'baz is hurt"

One of the older girls had hung back for most of the hatching but one
little green was intent on getting to her and circled behind some of
the other candidates while they reached out to try and touch her. But
the little one was intent on her prize and finally bumped into Jeyme
from behind. "Did you see that?" She grinned at N'vanik.

}:Quinneth is very determined.:{ **I can see that.**

When they were finally done and all hatched she couldn't help but see
the sag in Rondera's shoulders. "I'm sorry," she said to K'deren.

"Me too," he siad softly. His daughter looked close to tears. "Her dragon
can't have been clutched yet."

"Maybe next time," N'vanik said. He turned to Cyradis. "I want to
catch Corowal and have a little chat about his son." He didn't care
about a possible scandal, he wanted to know if Corowal had been any
kind of father to the boy.

"So do I," she said with a hand on his arm. "There are issues we'll
need to settle in advance." She didn't know how many people had heard
the outburst but was sure there'd be questions for them both. The news
wouldn't keep for long. "Let's greet the new pairs first. He'll be at
the feast," she indicated Corowal with her chin.
