It was late when she finally came out of her weyr and onto the
hatching sands. She was nicely dressed for the hatching feast with a
warm cloak thrown over her arm for when they traveled.
}:Why do you make them wait:{ the softly amused voice of her lifemate
asked as she passed the egg heavy gold.
**Small pleasures, dear** she laughed back. She sometimes mystified
herself with her reactions to her Weyrleader but she found she got a
perverse pleasure from small needles. Maybe it made no difference at
all to N'vanik maybe it did. She floated out to the bowl with a smile.
"Finally," N'vanik said from where he leaned against Loseth's leg.
"It's just River Bluff. You didn't have to fuss so much."
She rolled her eyes at him and shook her head. "You know I have to
dress up for River Bluff of all the Weyrs." She passed him and held
her skirts in one hand while she began her climb up into her seat
behind her Weyrleader.
N'vanik made sure she was secure and strapped himself in. "Why? Trying
to compete with Rhosyn?"
"No," she chucked as she wrapped her arms around him. "Our styles are
completely different." Rhosyn was rather known for her spectacular
choices from what she'd heard and Cyradis wanted to look elegant on
her Weyrleader's arm. But elegant took a little time. Whatever else
she might think of him N'vanik was a handsome man. "Our hatching's
next from what I can tell, so people will be... evaluating."
"Hm, yeah. You're officially the new Weyrwoman, so I can see that,"
N'vanik said. Loseth took off and gained height. He'd been to River
Bluff often enough that he barely needed the image from his rider to
make the jump /between/. A few cold moments, and they were over the
Weyr.
She half smiled at his reply and thought maybe there was a glimmer of
hope for them after all. She watched the sky as they slotted into the
traffic over River Bluff. The skies over a Weyr were so busy with
arrivals during a hatching she was glad for a dragons innate sense of
where he was to keep them safe. "Thank you Loseth," she said running
her hand over the bronze hide by where she sat.
"He says you're welcome," N'vanik said. They landed and he slipped
down the bronze's arm to help her off. The area was busy with dragons,
riders and passengers. He glanced around, looking for Rhosyn, but she
was probably already inside.
The senior queen had seen Loseth, though. }:She is inside with the
Weyrleader. There are seats saved:{ Orlaith was a splendid sight on
her ledge down low. The big gold was easy to spot and she had clearly
received a bath and been oiled recently till her pale hide gleamed. She
was humming to welcome the new dragonets, but she wouldn't enter
the Grounds. This was Vilarth's turn.
Cyradis accepted his help dismounting. It was far more awkward in a
dress than her normal flying leathers and she need his support until
her feet finally touched the ground. The hum of many dragons grew
louder as they walked side by side into the hatching cavern. She
recognized several riders from Dolphin Cove already in the stands.
Maybe she had pushed things a little too late. Sure enough the
candidates were entering the sands. She picked up her pace.
"See what fussing gets you?" N'vanik complained as they made their way
to their seats. Loseth had relayed the message, and he found the saved
spots near the River Bluff Weyrleaders. He nodded his thanks to
Rhosyn.
She took her seat with a nod first to K'sedel and Rhosyn, then to
Lenala and D'ren. A sweet false smile curved her lips as she turned
back to N'vanik. "And yet we're in time. Not a single egg has cracked."
"Barely in time," he muttered.
