}:Loseth are you coming or what?:{ Orlaith badgered the poor bronze.
Her rider was pacing the ledge, grateful for the chance to get away
from the Weyr. Rhosyn had gotten dressed for the climate over at
Amber Hills and she was ready to be picked up. She didn't want to
scare the poor people with a queen, two bronzes, and a brown arriving.
}:We're coming,:{ the bronze replied. After a moment he added, }:We're
on time.:{
Shortly after, he appeared over River Bluff and circled down for a landing.
Once he was down, Rhosyn didn't waste any time. She clambered up
there and blew her queen a kiss. Orlaith made a noncommittal sound
as her rider deserted her for a night of likely fun. "This is going to be
fun," she said to N'vanik as she strapped herself in behind the passenger neck ridge.
"I hope so." He patted Loseth and in a moment they were off. A moment
/between/ and they were over the Vintner Hall's Tavern. The bronze
dropped off his rider and passenger and went to join the other
dragons.
N'vanik led Rhosyn inside and looked around to see if the other two
had gotten a table yet.
Sh'del nudged R'enh as the two walked in and all heads turned to stare
at them. "Here they are," he chortled as he watched the Holders.
"Hello," called R'enh as they spotted the others. He dropped a kiss on
Rhosyn's cheek and then pointed out an empty table against the wall.
"Over there," he said and led the way.
She grabbed R'enh's arm for a moment to say hello before sidling up to
Sh'del. "Do they have good food in this place?" She'd never had the fortune
of being here before. Once they reached the table, she took a seat and
looked for a menu or something.
"It's not bad, just stay away from the fish," he said with a grimace
of memories from past meals.
"Who cares about the food. We're here for the drinks," N'vanik said as
he took a seat.
"Yeah," said R'enh. "But then, we've already had dinner." He smiled at
N'vanik. "It's 2 am for us."
When the serving wench came over, Rhosyn quickly made her decision.
"Some of your best red and I'll have a grilled wherry breast with some
tubers and bread please." She saw the girl read her knots and falter a
moment but she caught herself until she saw the other knots around the
table.
"It's okay, m'love," Sh'del said to the girl in a reassuring voice.
The poor thing looked like she was about to pass out.
"We'll give you a big tip." N'vanik smiled and ordered one of the
specialty beers.
After the girl brought them their drinks and disappeared again as quick as
she could, Rhosyn settled in with her wine. "So how is the Dolphin Cove
contingent tonight eh? Staying out of trouble are you, boys?" Her eyes
scanned first Sh'del's face, then R'enh's, and finally N'vanik's.
"As much as possible," R'enh answered with a grin at the other two. "I
fear it's a lost cause though." He tilted his small but powerful glass
of whiskey for a small sip, which left a welcome burn. "Mmm smooth."
"Mostly," N'vanik told her. "What fun is life without a little trouble?"
Rhosyn looked around at their faces and couldn't help but feel a
little nostalgic. She wasn't a young girl anymore, but there were a
lot of things that never changed. "So Sh'del, do you think you can
handle R'enh's weyrlings when they come?" She snickered, knowing
exactly how that could be.
"I'll strangle them where they stand if they don't behave." He
grinned wolfishly at R'enh over his pint glass as he took a sip.
N'vanik rolled his eyes. "You'll do no such thing. We need those Weyrlings."
"Not all of them," Sh'del quipped.
"Yes, all of them." R'enh raised a brow and pierced the other
brownrider with a mock glare. "Are you sure you wanted to appoint
_him_," he asked the Weyrleader.
"He hasn't got a choice...the post has driven everyone else to
drinking." At that he looked into his empty pint and fully aware of
the irony, waved the girl down for another pint.
With Sh'del's drink came the Weyrwoman's food. Seeing to that and tasting
the stuff, Rhosyn was quiet for a bit. She offered a fork with meat on it to the boys to try. "It could be worse. They could be my weyrlings. I
remember Orlaith's very first hatching ever. Boy that was a mess." She
couldn't help the giggles that started over that one.
"Was that the one where the holder asked if he could exchange his
son's green?" N'vanik asked.
"Mmm and I had to restrain Orlaith from eating him since he offended her.
Stupid man," she shook her head, almost choking through the giggles. "The
look on his face as she started to come that way...he backed off quick."
R'enh chuckled remembering the scene and the look of horror on the
man's face when he realized there was an unfriendly dragon coming his
way. "Priceless."
"Too bad Orlaith wasn't there when that guy doused you at our last
Hatching," N'vanik said.
"I could have taken care of it myself, but you were quicker than I was."
Her eyes met N'vanik's as she finished eating her food. Rhosyn hadn't
wanted to ruin his hatching, so she had hesitated. "It wasn't my Weyr
anyway so that was probably better. Next time, though, courtesy be
cracked, I'm going to get the sucker. Sh'del, you better back me up."
She sent an impish grin in his direction.
"Your big dragonhealer was certainly set to make something bad happen
to the man. Holder or no." R'enh chuckled "I was his wingman."
Sh'del just listened and sighed inwardly, not being a fan of Holders'
ways and thoughts on women. And thinking about how many ignorant
Holders he was about to have to deal with yet again, at Meledei's
Hatching, made him sigh a bit louder, not really aware he was doing
it.
"You're _my_ wingman, and don't you forget it," N'vanik told R'enh.
Hearing the sigh, Rhosyn saw the look on Sh'del's face. "It'll be okay
you know. Just one night. If I can get through it, you can. Plus the food
will be good." Drinking from her glass, she thought about what R'enh
said. "Yeah, he's a good sort. I think he doesn't know what to do with
me sometimes, but we work fine together."
Sh'del eyed the goldrider. "Yeah, but it's not just one night for me.
And I can't help but feeling terrible for all those boys who get
disowned by their parents."
R'enh smirked at N'vanik and then at Rhosyn. "Whatever you say."
"Well, if they disown them, then _we_ can be their family," N'vanik
said. "They don't need parents like that. If I were them, I'd say good
riddance." He'd left his father behind before he was even Searched.
Understanding that her mother had to send her to be fostered lest she
starve, Rhosyn didn't understand giving up a child in such a manner.
Rather, she had been disowned after her impression by a Weyrwoman
who seemed to always find fault with her. "Really, once they impressed
their parents wouldn't figure much in their lives anyway. It'll hurt for
a bit but they'll get over it when they have to love a dragonet."
Sh'del's caring for them, though, was admirable and made him a good
weyrlingmaster. Signaling the drudge for more drink, she received more
wine and continued onward since N'vanik was the one taking her home.
"You remember the day we both walked off those sands-how you felt
about Loranth.." A dreamy smile came over her as she went back to memories.
R'enh nodded at the Werylingmaster. "We had a good one like you coming
up. It made all the difference to the weyrlings back then." He
personally hadn't had to deal with any rejection and it was probably a
rare occurrence for any bronzrider but the blue and particularly the
greens were another story entirely. His best friend growing up had
Impressed blue. "You keep it up. They need it."
Sh'del nodded his thanks for the compliment and growled, "their
fathers all need a punch in the head if you ask me." He was certainly
tall and muscular enough to preform that duty on behalf of all his
rejected charges.
N'vanik smiled. "I'd be more than happy to provide that service. It'd
be bad for Hold relations, but it sure would feel good."
"Screw Holder relations." The brownrider smiled grimly, enjoying the
thought of what he'd like to do to more than a few fathers.
"Much as we might like it," said R'enh. "That might play havoc with
our next candidate searches. It's a difficult choice. But in the end
it's about the rider not their sharding families."
Rhosyn continued to eat, allowing the men to discuss their own Weyr.
Remembering how R'enh had usually been the voice of reason for her in
the past, she saw what he was doing now. Putting her hand on N'vanik's
shoulder, she patted him. "If you need to hit something, go find a rock. I
find it reduces the urge commensurately after the first few punches."
He arched an eyebrow. "I only hit rocks when they look at me funny."
"Remind me not to look at you funny," said R'enh knowing he'd been
accused of being hard headed a time or two. Then he raised his glass
to Sh'del. "Our weyrlings are lucky to have such a passionate
protector. We'll get them through it." He signaled the girl who was
leaning in a corner watching them with tired eyes.
"I think they're wanting to close," he said as she approached. He
anted up more than a fair share of their combined bill.
"Aye and you lot need some sleep.? The Weyrwoman put some marks
of her own in, calling it paid and got up. It was her actual bedtime so she
was tired, but not as tired as they were. Pulling on her jacket and getting
ready for the flight back, she went to hug Sh'del and R'enh. "Thanks for
coming. It was fun and we ought to do it again."
