Talryne

N'vanik knocked on the door that connected the Weyrwoman's weyr to the Council Chamber, as it was unlikely that anyone would use that door but him.

Talryne was uncertain. She'd never been good with this sort of thing, but she at least wanted to try. Although they didn't interact much, Cyradis had always been kind to her.

"Come in," Cyradis called from where she sat feeding her son. Only N'vanik used that door on any kind of regular basis.

N'vanik pushed open the door and held it for Talryne, who was holding a platter still wrapped to keep it warm. "Me and Tal came to see how you were doing. We brought cookies."

A smile spread across her face as Cyranik began excitedly pounding his little fists as he saw N'vanik. He gave a little squeal and bounced.

"Oh thank you," she said. "Cookies are always welcome."

"We made a special trip for these." Talryne set the platter on the table. "Fresh baked, still warm."

N'vanik smiled at Cyranik. "Hey little guy." He held out his arms.

She lifted Cyranik as she stood and handed him to N'vanik. "Careful," she said with a smile, "He's drooling a lot as his bottom teeth are coming in."

She turned to Talryne with a big smile. "Thank you so much for going to the trouble," she took the platter and walked over to the table. "Would you all like something to drink? I have tea, klah, and Cintroncello."

Talryne thought a moment. Alcohol could still be dangerous, but she was feeling fine, in company, and she liked Cyradis's Citroncello. "Citroncello please."

"Me too." N'vanik bounced his son.

Cyradis turned toward the cabinet and pulled out a cool bottle and poured it for everyone. Handing the first one to Talryne. She reached for a cookie and handed the other glass to N'vanik. "These sugar cookies are delicious," she said.

"A holder in Dragonsfall territory made them," N'vanik said. "She makes them for sweepriders."

"Mmm," she mumbled around her full mouth. "They go really well with the citroncello," she sipped from her glass and then took another bite. "I wonder if we could get her recipe for our lower caverns."

"It's a closely guarded secret." N'vanik waved a cookie at her before taking a bite. "If anybody could make them, Arosil might not get as many visitors."

"And then how would she get all the gossip?" Talryne said with a smile.

"Ah yes, that is important," she chuckled. "Well thank you for bringing me some of your stash."

"She was thrilled when I told her who it was for. Maybe we can visit together sometime." N'vanik said. Then he chuckled. "Well, I should warn her first. She only doesn't panic about a Weyrleader's visit because she knew me before."

Cyradis raised a brow and then grinned at Talryne. "Oh did she now?"

"N'vanik met her when he was at Dragonsfall," Talryne said.

"I invited her family to my first Hatching." N'vanik sat, holding Cyranik with one arm.

A big smile lit Cyranik's face and he patted N'vanik's arm. "Dada," he said. Then he looked at Cyradis. "Mama." Tilting his head he pointed at Talryne. "Tata."

Cyradis' eyebrows climbed toward her hairline and a big grin lit her eyes. "Thats right sweetie," she said and handed him one of the cookies. "Good boy Cyranik."

N'vanik beamed. "He's a smart one. Aren't you?" he said to the baby.

"Da," he said again and leaned in for an open mouthed baby kiss.

N'vanik didn't even mind the slobber. He laughed.

Talryne felt a little pang. N'vanik clearly loved his children and she still felt a shadow of guilt for ending her pregnancy Turns ago. She took a sip of citroncello, trying to wash the feeling away.

"Tata," Cyranik offered his cookie to the woman at his dada's side. He'd seen her often enough that he was as comfortable with her as he was with his brothers and sisters. Of course he didn't understand relationships other than who was familiar and who was not.

Cyradis smiled. "I'm sorry, he's already slobbered over that one." She picked up the plate and offered it to Talryne.

Talryne took a cookie from the plate and also took the one from Cyranik, quickly swapping the slobbered cookie for the fresh one. "Thank you," she told the baby, and took a bite. "Mmm."

Cyranik took the cookie and leaned his head against his father's shoulder as he gnawed at it.

Cyradis smiled at the three of them, feeling welling up inside. "Thank you so much." She leaned over to hug Talryne.

Talryne was a little startled, but the whole point was to be there for Cyradis, so she relaxed into the hug. "I know we aren't close but I wanted to . . . help. A little, if I could." When she'd heard about K'deren leaving, her first thought was for Cyradis, and her second was a stabbing fear at the idea of N'vanik leaving her. But then N'vanik had taken her in his arms, and she'd seen the same fear reflected in his eyes.

"And you have, very much." she smiled but there were still tears standing in her eyes. She stepped back and looked at N'vanik. "Do you want to take him for a bit? If he gets fussy you can just bring him back."

"Sure." He looked at her with a hint of concern. "Do you want to be alone? Guess I should've asked before barging in."

"I'll be okay," she smiled and nodded. "Cyranik needs to know his da. So, this is a good thing. I'll just have some klah and cookies and relax a little."

"Alright." N'vanik stood and then bent to kiss Cyradis's temple. "You know I'm not far."

She smiled and closed her eyes for a moment. "I do, and thanks again."
