Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Date: month 13, day 1 of Turn 11
Notes: Mentioned: Aydhara, K'lvin
N'kevyn had dressed up like a respectable trophy weyrmate, fully intending to be a polite, civilized accessory for the weyrwoman second.
But then the first dragon to break the shell went directly to his son. The whoop the bronzerider let out was deafening for the poor souls immediately near him, who were then informed several times that it was his son who'd Impressed first.
By the time the hatching was over and the candidates were ready for visitors, he had calmed down slightly, at least until he actually caught sight of his son. At that point he pushed his way rudely through the rest of the families coming to greet the new weyrlings, immediately pulling his son into a crushing hug. "Excellent job, son!"
N'kayden swelled with pride at his father's praise. "Isn't he perfect?" he said, leaving the hug to 'present' his dragon to his parents.
Aydhan wasn't far behind. She stopped to apologize (quickly) to the people her weyrmate had pushed through, and let them know that it was _her_ son that Impressed the first dragonet of the clutch, and that she'd be back to wish them a better congratulations at the Hatching Feast. "He _is_ perfect!" Aydhan agreed when she finally appeared at N'kevyn's elbow. "What's his name?"
N'kevyn crouched down, making a show of taking a moment to study the brown from nose to tail before declaring, "Absolutely perfect. And such a decisive little thing, too! He went right for you."
"His name is Aberath," N'kayden said proudly.
Aberath turned to look at the new humans. }:Your sire and dam?:{
"Yes," N'kayden answered out loud with a laugh. "Doesn't it look like he's cocking his eyebrow at you?" he asked his parents, indicating the mark of differentiated brown above Aberath's eyeridge.
"He does." Aydhan agreed. "Look at his little markings. Aberath. A handsome name for a handsome boy. And the first one out of the shell! That's a good omen."
"Where's Aydhara?" N'kayden asked, looking past his parents. A frown pleated his brow. "She.. she didn't Impress?"
"No," N'kevyn said, "not this time. It would be hard to have two perfect dragons in one clutch, though," he tried for a light joke.
"Oh," N'kayden's voice was soft. He hadn't considered that Aydhara wouldn't Impress. There had been a certain feeling that they would surely do Weyrlinghood together.
}:What's wrong?:{ Aberath questioned, turning his head quizzically at his lifemate's feelings.
"It's nothing." The new brownrider assured his dragon by placing a hand on his headknob.
"We'll check in on her a little later." Aydhan said gently. "She has plenty of hatchings ahead of her, and you only Impress once. Aberath will have to be a good big brother to her dragon, won't you darling?"
Aberath's chest puffed out and his wings, which seemed laughably small at this point in his development, flexed a little. }:Tell her I will be _the best_.:{
**Oh wow, you really _do_ sound like me.**
"He says he'll be the best," N'kayden relayed.
"Well, let me see," N'kevyn held his hand out but waited for a nod from N'kayden before touching the brown, making a show of patting his puffed out chest, "No, you're right. He is definitely going to be the best." He ignored a little trickle of offense from a certain far off bronze. "You'll have to introduce him to Avicath. He has lots of tips about being the best," N'kevyn's lips quirked into a smile at that. The validity of those tips was, of course, in question.
"Hopefully you and K'lvin can get out all the bad habits before he's introduced to Avicath." Aydhan said with a laugh. "I think that's enough excitement for the little boy. Hatching takes a lot out of a baby. You better get him tucked away in the weyrling barracks before he's too tired to move. We'll shower you with more praise at the Hatching Feast." And she needed to apologize to....someone's parents.
"I'll see you there," N'kayden said, leaning in and popping a kiss on his mother's cheek before bundling up his very sleepy brown dragonet and heading toward the Weyrling Barracks as if he were holding the most precious gem on Pern.
