J'nic walked to the Headwoman's office, a clipboard in his hand. One
of the Weyrlingstaff Assistants had provided him with the most recent
list of Candidates, including their ages, where they were from, and if
they had a craft. With K'lvin's suggestion that he meet with
Candidates, he was interested to hear the Headwoman's thoughts. He
also was curious to meet her, since he imagined they would need to
interact fairly frequently to discuss Candidate matters.
He was prepared to be greeted by an empty office, but instead arrived
to a closed door and an assistant who said he could wait for her to
finish her current meeting. He sat down and looked at the list,
wanting to begin familiarizing himself with the names.
"Thank you," Bilpen said as he opened the door and smiled at Jayzine.
"Please let me know if you need any additional modifications. My teams
are wrapping this project and we'll be tasked with another as soon as
I send my reports in to the Hall."
Jayzine extended her hand. "I can't say enough good about what you and
your teams have done here Master Bilpen. It has been a pleasure
working with you."
She saw the greenrider waiting and waved him in.
Bilpen nodded as he passed him and strode out the door.
"Headwoman," J'nic gave a nod and a smile as he entered her office and
took a seat. "I don't want to take a lot of your time, but wanted to
come introduce myself. I'm J'nic, and I'm the new Weyrlingmaster
Third. I just arrived from Dragonsfall Weyr a few days ago."
"Well met J'nic," she nodded. "Are you still in the temporary Weyrs or
did you move inside?" She had recently handed part of the weyr
assignment tasks to her assistant and just wanted to know that his
needs had been met. She waved toward a seat across from her. "Would
you like anything to drink?"
"I was lucky enough to be able to move directly into a permanent weyr.
It's wonderful." To her question he shook his head. "No thanks. I
recently had breakfast. K'lvin and I ate together and then he gave me
a tour of the hatching cavern and weyrling barracks. It'll take some
time for me to familiarize myself with everything, but it's
interesting to be in a place that's so new. You must have been one of
the first to arrive at the Weyrhold. Do you feel completely settled
in?"
"I was," she said. "Settled? Yes," she said. "But there is still so
much to do. Master Bilpen and his crew will be leaving soon. Their
work is finished but our's is ongoing." She looked at the records in
his hands. "How can I help you?"
Time to get down to business. "K'lvin thought it would be a good idea
for me to get to know the Candidates, since many of them will
eventually be weyrlings. I was hoping to meet with each of them
briefly over the next sevenday or two, pulling them away from chores.
I hope that won't be too disruptive." He knew the Weyrlingmaster was
responsible for Candidates, but Jayzine played a large role in their
care, including assigning chores.
"I see," she said and then nodded. "We should be able to accommodate
that easily enough. The candidates live on the third floor of this
building. I can give you temporary use of one of the offices so you
can conduct your interviews. Do you need a list of the current
candidates?"
"Thank you. That would be really helpful." He had assumed they would
meet in his office, but he liked that the Candidates would feel more
comfortable and perhaps be more likely to open up if he met them near
their living quarters. In response to her question, he briefly turned
his clipboard to her. "I have some basic information on all the
Candidates. However, I'm not sure if I should try to see them in a
certain order. Is there anyone you think would benefit from an early
meeting?"
She pulled the list from her drawer. “I’ll make you a copy to use,”
she said. “I can have it for you this afternoon if that works for
you,” she added.
"That would work well. Thank you, Headwoman. I'll let you get back to
the rest of your work." As he headed back to his office, he smiled. He
was looking forward to these meetings.
