Y'gel got a garbled kind of message from Aughashyth about K'lvin that
was tinged with panic. "What's happening?"
Briata yelled back from the other room. "Something's happened to K'lvin!"
Y'gel dropped the hide he'd been studying and ran out the door before
realizing he had no idea where K'lvin was. Aughashyth knew however so
he just jumped aboard to be taken where he needed to go.
He did see healers running across the bowl in the same direction so
when he dropped of the side near Xmrenth he fell to his knees next to
the bronzerider and began to check his vitals. "K'lvin," he started
talking. "Are you in pain?"
K'lvin's face was contorted with pain. "Can't... breathe." He managed
to gasp out.
}:Do something!:{ Xmrenth demanded in panic as his head hovered
anxiously over Y'gel.
**Shaffit!** Y'gel thought fiercely. Yes he had healer training but
his emphasis was in dragons and this looked like a heart issue. "Stay
with me K'lvin," he said and ripped the man's tunic open. Then leaned
his head against his chest.
A healer rounded the door way with a box and Y'gel snapped "Aconite or Adonis?"
The healer nodded and dropped next to the bronzerider. "The heart?"
"Yes," Y'gel said and lifted his hands in the universal sign of 'you
take over.' "I'm a dragonhealer."
Another healer came through the door puffing. "What do we have Gerton?"
"It's a heart seizure sir," the journeyman replied. "I have Aconite or Adonis,"
The master healer looked at K'lvin, "Good you're awake."
**Just barely.** K'lvin thought in the swirl of mushy things that were
circling in his head. Had someone doused him with cold water? No, it
was sweat, he realized. Former training told him that he needed to
remain calm, that if he panicked it would make breathing even more
difficult.... Only, K'lvin was finding it hard to remain calm when it
felt as if his heart were turning to stone.
"Aconite," Bordaise said and the journeyman pulled it out of his bag.
He knelt near the bronzerider. "This should ease the palpitations so
we can move you to the infirmary alright?" He poured a small amount
into a tiny cup. "Take this."
K'lvin's hands felt tingly and numb, so taking the cup proved to be
easier said than done. Finally, the healer had to help him get the cup
to his lips. He swallowed the bitter liquid and grimaced. If his heart
didn't kill him he was certain whatever that stuff was would! But what
the healer said was true, slowly the tightening in his chest began to
ease up enough so that he could catch a breath or two without feeling
like he was suffocating.
At that point a pair of runners came in with the stretcher and the
master healer directed them to place it next to K'lvin.
"I'll help," Y'gel said and picked up his shoulders to move him gently
onto the stretcher. Then he turned and picked up one end. He was quite
a big man and very strong he was also very experienced in moving the
injured. "Let's go," he told the other man and they managed to walk
quite fast toward the infirmary.
The trip to the infirmary was a blur for K'lvin, one minute he was
being jostled around on a stretcher, and the next he was lying on an
examination table with healers encircling him as they discussed among
themselves the best form of treatment and what should be done. Since
aconite had already been given, it was determined that he would be
given tansy for any remaining palpitations.
"Allright, K'lvin, we're going to give you some time to rest. We'll be
checking in on you periodically into the evening."
K'lvin nodded. Even though the herbs were doing their job, he was
feeling washed out and weak.
Y'gel had stayed out of the way but when the others left he slipped in
the door. "Is there anyone you want me to tell?"
"Just Kylena's foster mother." He said, looking up at the other
bronzerider. "Thanks for responding to Xmrenth's call."
"Sure," Y'gel smiled. "What is the foster mother's name?"
"Esalee is Kylena's foster mother." It pained K'lvin to think that he
couldn't be with his daughters when they were already going through a
major transition, but that was why the Weyr's fostering system was so
important.
"Briata and I will make sure she has dinner with us and a chance to
visit you." Y'gel's eyes promised he would do what he said.
"Thanks, Y'gel." He hadn't come to Dolphin Cove to be dead weight, and
until his condition was further assessed and he got the final word
from the healers, K'lvin's future as a dragonrider was in jeopardy.
