These events being what they were, there were a lot of duties for the
visiting Weyrwoman and he watched Saibra perform hers admirably.
Occasionally she caught him watching and occasionally he caught her
watching him. He made sure he danced with Rhosyn and congratulated
K'ran and all of those other obligatory type duties. Then he circled
the dance floor watching for his opportunity. When it came he didn't
hesitate.
"May I have this dance," he asked from behind her shoulder.
K'yne, who had remained dutifully by Saibra's whenever she needed,
looked down to her for permission. She gave it with a nod of her head,
and he turned and retreated to the refreshment table.
The Dragonsfall Weyrwoman turned and placed her hand calmly into
R'enh's, despite the way her heart was hammering in her chest.
He held her fingers for just a heartbeat too long before he turned to
lead her to the floor. His jaw clenched under his skin but he did his
best to keep a pleasant look on his face. When he turned to take her
in his arms what he felt was loss more than anger. He was aware of the
eyes on them. They had a reputation after all. So, he started the
steps they'd danced so often before and he swept her around the floor
in a long curve.
After a few bars of swirling and standard tempo he guided her into the
steps they'd rehearsed so often in the past. He lifted her by the
waist, twirled around and set her back on her feet with a flourish.
Other couples stepped out of their way and when the music ended he
dipped her though his injured shoulder screamed in protest.
He pulled her back upright with a smile and clapped for the Harpers.
Then he stepped close to her once again thinking of Cyradis' advice.
"What happened to us Saibra?"
It had been hard keeping her emotions in check during the dance. Being
so close to R'enh, his touch, the familiar scent of his cologne. In
the past, he had always been the first person she would go to when
something was wrong. She had longed to be able to do that during the
miscarriage but something had held her back.
"I can't... Not here." She said, looking up at him with fresh tears in
her eyes. There were too many people around, and she knew it wasn't a
conversation she could have with R'enh without crying.
He saw the beginnings of tears and it broke the residual anger. His
eyebrows twitched together and his eyes reflected a bit of confusion.
Perhaps he'd judged the situation wrongly or judged her wrongly, "Of
course," he said softly. "Where and when?"
"Tonight after the festivities? We can meet on that beach we like."
Neutral ground seemed suitable, and it wouldn't put such a time
restraint on R'enh since the beach was in Dolphin Cove territory.
"I'll be there," he said with a slight bow. He saw her guardian
brownrider coming toward them and added. "Thank you for the dance my
lady." Turning on his heel he nodded to the brownrider and decided he
needed some food to counteract some of the wine he'd been drinking. He
wanted to be sober for whatever was coming.
