Cyradis

Cyradis was still fuming from her confrontation with the wherryheaded
Harper when she finally made her way toward where her son was feeding
his new lifemate. But she saw N'lon coming from the other direction
and picked up her pace as she drew closer.

"What do I call you now," she smiled as she came up on one side and
completely ignored her former Weyrmate.

The smile that crossed the teenager's face was an unusual one, that
lit up his normally broody features. "R'nar," he told his mother
proudly as he stood with one hand resting on Iorath's glossy shoulder.
He had doubted that he would ever find a lifemate, and if he did, he
had been worried about what color it would be, because he knew that
anything less than a bronze would find fault in his father's eyes.

"Congratulations, R'nar," N'vanik said as he joined his Weyrwoman. He
too was still shaking off his anger but tried to hide it for R'nar's
sake.

N'lon had taken his time to head over there. He had noticed Cyradis
and the bronzerider having a confrontation. And anyway, he hadn't
wanted to seem too eager about anything. He did want to see his son
and say congratulations to him. It was good of the boy to have
Impressed.

"R'nar, you say?" he asked as he arrived, pacing around the two of
them. "A good conformation, he is. Panitath's get is always fine."

Perhaps it was the after affects of their prior confrontation but just
the tone of his voice raised the hackles on the back of her neck.
"R'nar," Cyradis smiled "He is quite handsome," she said. "What's his
name?"

"Thanks, Dad." R'nar said automatically to the compliment N'lon paid
his dragon, even though he seemed more proud of the dragon's build
than he did that R'nar had been the one to Impress him.

"His name is Iorath." He said, answering his mother's question. He
could tell from the look on her face, and the way the Weyrleader
seemed tense, that something wasn't quite right. "Is something wrong?"
Being the first to Impress he'd left the Sands quickly and didn't know
what else had happened.

"R'nar and Ioreth." N'lon repeated, setting them together in his mind.
His son had Impressed bronze, just like him. It was a distinguished
pairing.

"One of the dads decided to be an ass about his boy Impressing green,"
N'vanik said. The Weyrleader had sent Faveron home with a large male
greenrider, daring the Harper to make any more rude comments.

At that, N'lon narrowed his eyes. "Holders. Never know what's good for
them. They should be honored the boy was worthy at all."

"Yes well, this one was a Master Harper and should have known better
with all the time they spent here at Dolphin Cove." She was still
unable to believe the man had told the boy to 'give her back.' "But
that is not what we're here to say," she smiled at R'nar. "I'm very
proud of both you and Iorath. He was the first to split his egg today
and that is a very good sign."

It was a good sign, they'd talked about that in Candidate classes
before. "Thanks Mom." It felt good to have his mother's attention
fixed on just him for the moment. As a Weyrwoman she was a busy
person, and then has a mother of multiple children, she was stretched
even further to divide her attention.

It seemed as though Cyradis' Weyr was being well-run, though it pained
him somewhat to admit it. Not that he thought less of his former
woman, but her choice of a brownrider as weyrmate had made him think
she'd forgotten the importance of prestige and status. And while her
Weyrleader was tall, was he smart or politically savvy? He wondered.

"Yes, it was auspicious for a bronze to be first and Impress the
Weyrwoman's son. A smart sign the holders should respect," was all
N'lon commented.

"Congratulations bronzerider," K'deren said. "He's a good looking
hatchling."

Cyradis mentally gritted her teeth at N'lon's comments, but refused to
let her smile drop as she reached out to rub R'nar's shoulder. "You
did great. See you at the feast?" She reached out and squeezed
K'deren's hand. Of all the people at Dolphin Cove she'd told him the
most about her former Weyrmate.

K'deren returned the gentle squeeze. "You and Rondera in the same class,
better watch out for each other."

R'nar nodded respectfully to his mother's weyrmate, "Yes, sir." He and
Rondera weren't particularly close, since they'd grown up apart, but
family was family.

}:Is everyone finished admiring me? I am ready to sleep.:{ Iorath commented.

"I'd better get him to the barracks." R'nar said with the hint of grin
tugging at his lips.

"See you at the feast," N'vanik told the weyrling. He hoped the boy
took after his mother more than his father.
