Cyradis nodded at Sh'del, "We're agreed then," she smiled. "He
will be released to queen's wing until I'm satisfied with his
performance?" She knew this had been a bit longer than she'd
envisioned but really it had been for J'ackt's safety and of those he
flew with.
"Perfect." Sh'del smiled and nodded to his Weyrwoman. Cyradis was a
smart woman, she could more than handle J'ackt from here. From her
perch on Cyradis' paperwork on the desk, Trouble chirped her persona's
approval of the Weyrwoman.
N'vanik let out a little sigh of relief. J'ackt could finally move
into the fighting wings. "I'm glad we're all in agreement."
Cyradis had Panitath bespeak the young bronze. "He should be here
soon," she told the others.
A firm rap on the door frame sounded shortly after Cyradis spoke.
J'ackt peered into the door, looking at all three of them. He looked
tired and drawn, but there wasn't as much tension in his shoulders
that he had seemed to carry for so long. "You wanted to see me?"
"Yes," Cyradis smiled. "I believe we have some good news for you." She
didn't want to steal all the thunder for herself so she looked at the
other two men waiting for one of them to speak up.
N'vanik nodded toward Sh'del. Good news should come from him for once.
Sh'del smiled at the lad. "We feel its time you and Zith showed us
what a good fighting pair looks like. Ready to join Cyradis' wing?"
He looked between all three of them for a moment, surprise registering
on his face. "I thought I would be in N'vanik's wing." He blinked,
realized he was being graduated and his brows arched. "So, I'll not be
a weyrling?"
Sh'del nodded to Cyradis to speak.
"You will be soon enough," she smiled at her big Weyrleader. "He's
made it clear he wants you there. But," she turned her eyes back to
the young bronzerider. "We don't ever want to set someone up to fail
and there are a great many riders in the wings who need to see what
you can do. They need to know you can be part of the team up there.
This is a great place for you to begin proving you have what it takes
to be in the high wings."
"It's not a punishment." N'vanik wanted to make that clear. "You've
got some good protective instincts and and they'll serve you well
there. Cyradis needs at least a few riders that aren't recovering or
pregnant."
"I know it's not. I'd be digging trenches if you wanted to punish me
for something."J'ackt took a moment to think about what they were
saying. Arguing that he was better off fighting in N'vanik's wing
wouldn't be well received and he knew some of the older riders weren't
so very trustful of him. The rumors about him and his temper were well
rooted at the Weyr. He looked at Sh'del for a moment, then back to
N'vanik and Cyradis. "Okay. When?"
"Drills are tomorrow right after breakfast," Cyradis smiled. At least
the lesson was remembered and that was a good thing. Bit by bit J'ackt
was gaining some awareness of the culture around him and how to
navigate. Also a good thing.
N'vanik smiled at J'ackt. "Congratulations, rider." He still had some
learning to do, but he'd come a long way.
"Indeed. I think this deserves a toast, don't you think, Weyrwoman?"
Sh'del nodded to Cyradis.
"I do indeed," she said and rose to get a bottle from her cabinet. She
had a rather fine taste in wines and with her connections at the
Vintner Hall she'd acquired more than one great bottle. "Here," she
said handing the bottle and corkscrew to N'vanik and turning back for
four glasses.
N'vanik got the wine open and started pouring when Cyradis set the
glasses down. He slid the first glass in front of J'ackt. "I think you
should make the toast."
Still near the doorway, J'ackt looked at the wine and then very
slowly, shook his head. "No, I'm good, but thanks." He'd had enough to
drink the past few sevendays to last him a lifetime. "Go ahead for
yourselves though."
Trouble, Sh'del's little green, took the opportunity to pounce on the
unclaimed glass, wrapping her tail around the handle and daintily
sipping from it. Sh'del watched her and snorted to himself. Better to
have a drunk flt than a surly weyrling.
Cyradis lifted a brow as she lifted her glass. "To J'ackt, who still
need lessons in manners, but has graduated to the wings," she grinned
to take the sting out of her words.
Trouble hiccuped her approval.
