Genna's heart was thumping mightily fast as she noticed the small
cluster of goldriders standing together, talking. This was her chance
of course and Lissath would bite her head off if she didn't take it.
So she gathered up her courage and her skirts and she made way for the
four. Standing just a bit to the side, she waited for a lull in the
conversation, so she could introduce herself.
Lenala just loved Hatchings, especially when she get to meet all the
other goldriders. Unless the Hatching was held at River Bluff Weyr,
like today, she rarely got to attend them. One goldrider had to stay
in the Weyr, and since she was īSecond, it was usually her. Of course
such practices varied from Weyr to Weyr. She noticed the young woman,
and more importantly, her knots.
"Hi there, please join us. You must be Dragonsfall's newest goldrider.
I'm Lenala, River Bluff's Second," she went to pull her into the
circle of riders.
Cyradis turned a warm smile on the newcomer, "Pleasure to see you
again Genna, I'm Cyradis," she nodded. There could only be one rider
with that combination of knots, Senior Weyrling, gold, and
Dragonsfall. She realized she was equally as identifiable by her own,
Senior Weyrwoman, Dolphin Cove. "Meledei is around here somewhere,"
she strained to look to see if she could spot her youngest goldrider.
"I'll introduce you."
Saibra had broken away from her handsome Weyrleader escort earlier
when she'd spotted Cyradis and Rhosyn. After all, she had to give the
River Bluff Weyrwoman a congratulations on a good hatching, and
especially on having a new queen in the Weyr. She still remembered her
first time attending an event as a goldrider. Meeting the veteran
goldriders had been somewhat intimidating, and now Saibra felt a
little odd knowing that she was considered one of those "veteran"
riders now. At the mention of Meledei, Saibra started looking through
the crowd as well, "Yes, where is she? I haven't seen her in forever."
"It's a pleasure to meet you all," Genna said with a tentative smile.
"It was a good hatching, wasn't it? Did you all get a chance to
congratulate Lanniya yet?" She wasn't exactly sure if she was being
rude, just mixing in to the conversation like that, but she knew
Lissath would be proud.
The Weyrleaders had been the first to offer their congratulations to
Lanniya as was proper. Rhosyn was quiet at first, letting the others
talk. Instead, the River Bluff Weyrwoman sized up the weyrling.
Immediately she was comparing Genna to Lanniya and wondering. She'd
only met Meledei a handful of times so she didn't have much to compare
with there either. Her opinion of Dragonsfall weyrwomen wasn't very
high thanks to both Traelyn and Janani. "Yes it was a good Hatching
and now we have more weyrlings which is always good in a Pass, along
with a new queen for more eggs." **How long until Lissath Rises hm?**
"Yes," Cyradis smiled. "She seems sweet and her little lifemate is
quite perky." She scanned the group of ladies giving Saibra a wink.
"Do you think the bronzeriders around here are nervous to find out
what we're talking about?"
Saibra grinned at Cyradis, "They should be, I think from this group of
women here we've slept with most of them in one way or another so we
have plenty of notes to compare." The Dragonsfall Weyrwoman chuckled
thinking of some of the more popular bronzeriders that had been
around, like R'enh. She had no negative things to say about that one.
"They brought it on themselves if they're nervous," Kapera said with a
laugh. She was enjoying meeting with the other goldriders and having a
moment away from her own Sands. The gossip and relaxation would do her
well.
She turned and offered her hand to Genna. "Pleasure to meet you.
Onnyth's a fine queen and I'm sure Lissath is a wonderful dragon."
"Is there a goldrider only party and I missed the invitation?" Meledei's
alto tone joined the others, but there was amusement in each word that
reflected in the smile she greeted the other women with. Immediately, she
offered her congratulations, then let her verdant gaze settle on the newest
of them.
"Looks like it's turning into a one," Lenala grinned. "How are you,
Meledei? And I think this calls for something special," she gestured a
lower cavern worker and asked him to bring all of them sparkling wine.
"I think I just got here in time!" Teseada grinned. "It took a little
while to persuade Onnyth that I would be fine here with N'call for a
candlemark or so."
Saibra smiled as her second in command appeared, "Tes! So glad you
made it," the Dragonsfall Weyrwoman said as she plucked a glass of the
sparkling wine from the tray that the drudge had returned with at
Lenala's request. "We were just saying that all of the men at this
event should feel incredibly nervous now with such a powerful,
gorgeous group of women gathered together."
"To the best, the brightest, and the prettiest," Lenala raised her glass
for a toast.
Kapera took her own glass from the tray and raised it, an appreciative
smile at Lenala's words.
Rhosyn toasted and then downed the thing in one gulp. Out of the group, she
probably knew Lenala and Cyradis the best but Kapera had been nice the one
time she'd visited. She knew it was supposed to be a joyous occasion and
she was trying so hard but she was still reeling after seeing him. She had
gone right back to where she'd been that day he'd left.
Cyradis too lifted her glass but only sipped at it. "It's only a pick
up meeting," she grinned at Meledei. "But it appears to be having a
nice effect." She looked around her at the men gathering around their
circle. She sidled closer to Rhosyn and said under her breath "You
alright?"
Lenala basked under Kapera's approval. "Are we overwhelming you?" she
asked Genna.
Saibra's keen blue eyes flicked to Cyradis as the Dolphin Cove
Weyrwoman spoke in a low tone to Rhosyn. The River Bluff Weyrwoman was
certainly not her usual stand-out self. From the past experiences that
Saibra had had with Rhosyn, which were undoubtedly few, she had always
felt that the woman loved to be the center of attention, and what
better excuse than hatching a gold dragonet would she have to parade
around with all eyes upon her?
Saibra thought back to when she had been Cyradis' Second at Dolphin
Cove and the River Bluff Weyrwoman had come there seeking refuge since
Lenala's flight had, apparently, snuck up on her and she'd had no
where else to go but to crash at Dolphin Cove for a while. That had
always seemed like a silly thing, in Saibra's mind, for a Senior
goldrider not to know when her own Second was going to rise. Females
were often glowing and proddy for days before they rose.
"I will see you ladies back at Dragonsfall," she said to Teseada and
Genna, "enjoy yourselves. I've got a few dances that were promised to
me by some very handsome men that I must go claim." Bidding the rest
of the goldriders gathered a good evening, the Dragonsfall Weyrwoman
turned and headed for the dance floor. She knew R'enh had
to be there somewhere, the man could never resist a good dance.
"Enjoy the dancing. I know I will," Kapera agreed. She really did wish
Saibra all the best at Dragonsfall.
Turning, she looked at Cyradis. It was almost like she was in a fog.
She didn't want to be there, talking to people. Apparently she wasn't
doing so well then, if the other woman had noticed. Maybe it was time
to take her leave. "I don't feel very well, but..I can't leave my own
Hatching. There are guests and folks to thank. Maybe just a moment,
though..."
Lenala nodded at Saibra. "Enjoy yourself." Then she noticed the
exchange between Rhosyn and Cyradis. The look she gave to Rhosyn was
concerned. What was wrong with her? She should be eating and drinking
and dancing and seducing all those handsome bronzeriders.
"Thank you, Ma'am, I'll see you back home," Genna smiled politely,
unable to completely let her politeness go, even as she emptied her
first glass of the sparkling wine. "This is really good," she said,
holding the glass up in Lenala's direction. "Does it come directly from
the Hall at Amber Hills?"
Meledei honestly hadn't had a chance to respond to those who had greeted
her. The conversation had moved from one thing to another, then suddenly
Rhosyn was the center of attention - but not because of the splendid
hatching. The woman did indeed look ill and the young goldrider
wondered if maybe she should excuse herself, hatching feast or no
hatching feast.
Cyradis took Rhosyn's elbow and steered her away from the rest of the
women, She nodded at Kapera and then Saibra before setting her glass
on a drudge's tray and walking away. More time with her fellow
goldriders would have been fun but it seemed there was a need and she
was a firm supporter of other Weyrwomen in pain. "Let's have a chat,"
she said softly.
"Actually, it's from my father's hold. He makes sparkling wine almost
as good as Hall's," Lenala replied to Genna's question but her
attention was on Cyradis and Rhosyn. Maybe Cyradis could reach her
better than she did.
"It's lovely," Genna smiled. She'd noticed the exchange between the other
goldriders, some concern perhaps for the Weyrwoman from River Bluff, but
she knew it was not her place to partake in whatever was going on. In time,
she would get to know these women better and then maybe she'd feel a little
more at ease between them. So she pretended not to notice and intended to
keep up a light conversation with the remaining goldriders.
