Physical Description of Persona:
Mardic is of medium height and was slender as a boy, though Turns of mine work have caused him to grow into a sturdier build. He is rather vain of his glossy black hair and used to grow it past his chin, so that it needed to be tied back for work, but he has recently cut it shorter in order to increase his resemblance to his supposed father, Lord Aswic. His features do indeed bear some similarity to those of the late Lord Holder, but it is that dark hair combined with his startlingly blue eyes that make his claim not unreasonable.
He cultivates a carefree and confident manner and a sense of appreciating the finer things in life, though he deliberately restrains himself from excess and frippery, aware of the importance of copying his "father's" simple tastes. To the casual observer, he appears nothing more than an open and earnest young man with an enthusiastic interest in his own background and ancestry.
Emotional Description of Persona:
From childhood, Mardic has dreamed of a greater future than fate has allotted him. Though intelligent, his heart is not in his craft - he craves adventure and fame rather than an ordinary life at the mining camp where he has lived all his life. As a child, he was in trouble more than most, getting himself into impossible scrapes and then somehow managing to talk his way out of them.
He is rather unscrupulous and an accomplished liar, though he uses this skill sparingly. The worst that most people would say about him is that he's rather a smooth talker - and some even admire him for that, as he was good at getting the best deals out of the traders that visit the camp.
History of Persona:
Mardic's father was a worker from one of the many small mines in Garnet Valley Hold territory, who met his future wife during a trip to the Hold proper with the mine's tithe of ore and stone. His birth came only a scant few months after the marriage of his parents, raising some eyebrows, but by the time he grew old enough to understand this fact had been mostly forgotten by the people of the mining camp. When he was about eight Turns old one of the other boys got hold of the story, inevitably leading to a fight and punishments for both. Afterwards, no-one bothered him with it again.
Once he was old enough, he followed his father's wishes and joined one of the mine shifts. For many Turns, it seemed as though he would never be more than an ordinary worker, only unusual in that no-one had yet persuaded him to settle down with a wife and start a family.
It wasn't until the Lord Holder, Aswic, paid a visit to the mine not long after his confirmation as Lord that Mardic had the first inkling of an idea. One of the other mine workers teased him later that evening about his passing resemblance to the Lord Holder, suggesting that his birth might be higher than he thought. Mardic settled the insult to his mother with his fists, but the idea lingered in his mind. He was reasonably certain that his father was the man who'd been married to his mother, before she died of a winter illness when he was fifteen, but what if people could be made to think otherwise?
Soon after his 27th birthday, his father was badly injured in a rockfall in the mines, and lasted only a few days before he died. With his sisters married and his brothers capable of taking care of themselves, Mardic began to consider leaving the mining camp and seeking a home elsewhere. The life of a drudge or a fieldhand, however, appealed to him no more than that of a mine worker.
It was when he heard the news of Lord Aswic's death, leaving only an infant son, that inspiration struck. With both of his parents and the Lord Holder dead, there was no-one who knew for certain that he was _not_, in fact, Lord Aswic's illegitimate son. If he took his story to the Hold, he might win an honoured place there - if not the Lordship itself! With high hopes, he announced his intention of leaving to the camp supervisor, packed his bags and set off on the journey to the Hold - and, he hoped, to fame and fortune.
