Physical Description of Persona:
Laithan approaches the world with critical dark eyes and an expression of deep analysis. He moves like a man always on a mission, speaking in crisp, tenor tones with sharp, commanding mannerisms to match. His black hair has started silvering but his klah-colored skin is still unlined, adding youthfulness to his 5’7 frame. His hands are stained from redwort use, as are the handful of leather and braided bracelets that he wears on both wrists. Most of his clothing tends to be darker hues -- blacks, browns, greens, purples.
Emotional Description of Persona:
Laithan thrives on knowledge and finding solutions. Analytical to the point of rudeness, he approaches life and his Craft like problems to be solved -- if he can just find the right formula for the issue, he can cure it, even though he knows it’s impossible to do for some things. Empathy isn’t his strong suit, which is surprising given his Craft, but he can offset that by being patient with others. Blatant incompetence or stupidity will just get him yelling.
Outside of healing, Laithan can be particular, almost controlling or possessive. He hates having loved ones hurt -- having a son who wants to be a dragonrider ratchets up his anxiety. He struggles with letting others live their (seemingly reckless) lives. He likes fishing and sailing but enjoys cooking most of all. Having people over to enjoy a meal he’s made gives him unbridled joy and is one of the few times anyone will see him unguardedly smile. He’s not much for romantic relationships, mostly because of his Craft dedication, but he’ll entertain the occasional intriguing woman.
History of Persona:
Though Laithan was born at Fort Hold, he spent most of his life in the South, bouncing from Hold to Hold with a journeyman healer of a father. While he’ll say that he misses a lot of the history attached to the North, there’s just better fishing in the South. Being the eldest of four, he spent most of his youth helping his mother with his younger siblings, though he really wanted to learn more of what his father was doing. It was fascinating to him that a patient could rattle off a list of symptoms and his father could just…fix the problem. Laithan wanted to do that too.
So he went into Healercraft at thirteen. He was the top of his class in studies but a poor student when it came to patient satisfaction. He was too brusque with them, telling them what _not_ to do. He fought his teachers on that as well, so much that they held him back a Turn to give him time to fix his attitude, which, honestly, he just learned to hide his judgment of idiots better. His time as a journeyman, working in small cotholds, taught him more about assumptions than any of his classes. He learned to listen, still critically, but also to ask the right questions of his patients. He finally felt like he was doing that seemingly miracle work that his father had done.
His third decade saw him at River Bluff Weyr for enough Turns to have two children. It was the most settled down he had ever been. Being at the Weyr also offered him the opportunity to learn a bit about dragon and beasthealing, something he immensely enjoyed because it increased his knowledge. This was also around the time when he acquired his firelizard Aspiration.
Laithan returned home to Opal Cove at the beginning of his fourth decade for two reasons: one, to finish up his Mastery, and two, because his father’s health was failing rapidly. In the few months before his death, Laithan transcribed hours upon hours of notes and conversations, pulling every bit of knowledge he could before it was lost, but also, trying to keep something of his father alive if nothing more than in greater memory.
Which is one of the quiet reasons why Laithan now stands ready to take over Healer Hall once it is completed.
Pets
Aspiration, Bronze Firelizard: aged 10, hatched m3 d3
Aspiration is a honey bronze firelizard. Well trained, he often helps his owner by retrieving things for him. Laithan jokes that the firelizard could do a better laceration repair than some students.
