Walnuts are light-demanding species that benefit from protection from wind. Walnuts are also very hardy against drought. Trees are cultivated primarily for timber and nut production. In China, nuts were used to treat wheezing, back and leg pains, and constipation. Walnut oil is used in soapmaking and as cooking oil.
