Expectations of Members

Our website is quite extensive, including FAQs and guidelines, as well as information to aid in story-writing. Members are expected to familiarize themselves with the information contained on the site, and to follow the guidelines provided.

Rules of Conduct

  • Flaming, insults, or harassment of other members will not be tolerated. Violation of this rule will result in disciplinary action, which could include an extension of or return to mentorship, loss of rank, or expulsion. Members are asked to be especially respectful of mentors and administrative staff. These members volunteer their time to keep the club running smoothly and deserve at least that in payment. This rule applies to any type of communication, including text and IM conversations.
  • Personas and their dragons, dolphins, or pets are the property of the approved writer. No member should write for another's persona without permission. This includes anticipating another persona's reaction, even in a copost. A nod, or simple yes or no answer, may be permitted, but don't object if the writer requests the opposite response in their next reply.
It is a simple matter to ask the other writer if what you're doing or saying is alright. (i.e. "Is it okay if I say this?") You can do this via email, text or Instant Message.
  • Respect other members' email accounts. Do not send chain letters, attachments, or other spam to the main list or to any other member without first gaining permission.

Triad Weyrs and its shared timeline clubs have been established primarily to provide a creative and fun outlet for its members. With cooperation and respect for each other, we can achieve that goal.

Full Post Rule

Posts are only sent to the mailing list in their 'final draft' format. They are written privately by members exchanging paragraphs at a time back and forth via private email, until all writers agree the post is finished. The finished post is sent to the mailing list for all to enjoy. If you prefer a more interactive style of writing such as round-robin posting, you might want to reconsider before joining Triad.

PBeM Only Rule

That means Play By E-Mail, and that is exactly what we do. If you want someone to write a story with you, contact that person and email back and forth to each other to complete it. We do not allow co-posting via any instant messaging service or chatrooms.

Feel free to plot or plan storylines via chat, but no writing of co-posts should be taking place.

Strict Canon Rules

We follow the books, particularly the later books such as Renegades, Dolphins, and Masterharper, fairly closely. This isn't to say that 'if it's not in the books, it's not in the club', but that if the books specifically state something is done a certain way, that's our canon. Allowances are made for more than 1200 turns since the end of the Ninth Pass, and we do have some limited technological advances, such as electricity in major Holds. There are no "pillowcrafters" (fandom term for prostitutes) at Triad.

That being said, some of the rules that used to appear on our AM rules page still are followed. Those would be:

  1. Our club is set over 1200 turns after the end of the Ninth Pass. The names of the characters from the books have pretty much faded from memory. Out of respect for AM and her works, mentions of any of the book characters are not permitted.
  2. In our timeline, Benden Weyr has only been reopened for a few Turns. No persona would have been born there.
  3. All dragon names must end in -th, and no names from the books may be used. See Anne's Names
  4. There are no absolute restrictions on dragonriders' sexuality, but please be aware of our FAQ on dragon color and sexual orientation when creating and writing about a dragonrider or candidate character's preferences. Any issues with mating flights which would cause a rider or their dragon serious distress must be approved by the Council. Otherwise, mating flight situations are up to the participants; stand-ins are not allowed.
  5. Golds Impress to Females only. Bronzes Impress to Males only. Browns Impress to Males only. Blues Impress to Males and Females (Member Reward). Greens Impress to Males and Females.
  6. Green dragons are rendered infertile both by chewing firestone and by genetics.
  7. All dragons live in Weyrs. Even watchdragons return to their Weyrs when off duty. No rogue dragons are allowed, and no dragons attacking humans or other dragons (except golds in mating heat).
  8. Dragons cannot outlive their riders. Dragons suicide /between/ the instant their rider dies, sometimes sooner in the case of blues or greens agitated by rider illness or severe injury.
  9. Deaf, mute, blind, or crippled personas may not Impress a dragon. Per Anne McCaffrey, dragons will not Impress a blind/deaf/mute candidate, so only injuries occurring after Impression will be considered. This is a fairly easy type of persona to get, considering we are early enough in the Pass that injuries are a bit more likely to take place.
  10. Dragons may not leave Pern, nor can anyone not from Pern visit there, not even a character from one of AM's other series. No Jedi Knights, Brain Ships, Catteni, etc can ever visit, so don't ask. We are still limited to AM's Pern.

Penalties for Violating Canon

Should a member violate canon in a post[1], the following may occur:

  • 1st Offence: Retraction and/or correction of the post in question
  • 2nd Offence: Written warning
  • 3rd Offence: Council supervised disciplinary mentorship
  • 4th Offence and Beyond: Mentorship and loss of rank.

Should the Council deem it necessary, stricter penalties may be enforced when a serious violation has occurred.

Triad's AI Policy

There is a club ban on ChatGPT or similar genAI tools that write the words for you. At Triad, you must do your own writing. The purpose of this club is to write and interact with your fellow members. Please respect each other by using your own creativity.

  1. Canon Rules are based on the books by Anne McCaffery and include but are not limited to the above list.
