The children were in bed and the weyr was dark and quiet save for the
lights that were strategically placed so that either occupant of the
bed could read if so desired. Light in such a fashion was a benefit
of the weyr. While her father had slowly begun to work on getting
electricity to his hold, it was not an immediate process, nor would it
be finished for another several turns. He had to work on it a little
at a time, as trades and funds allowed. The Weyr, however, was mostly
outfitted with it, which made some things easy.

With the two babies in their bassinet that they shared, Briata slipped
beneath the covers of the bed she shared with Y'gel. Since putting
them together, both children had started sleeping better. Nisheyl had
gone several sevendays without waking more than once to nurse, which
meant Briata was allowed more sleep. From her position in the bed, she
could just see their heads, eyes closed, faces peaceful. The body
that had been in bed before her had helped to warm the space beneath
the blankets and she snuggled a little closer to him. "I met that new
candidate today. The one who can hear dragons like me."

"Oh good," he said a little sleepily. He pulled her in closer and
kissed the top of her head. "I'd hoped you would. She's rather perky
isn't she?"

"That's...one way to describe it." Overly perky. It was honestly
hard to believe the girl was real - she was just_too_ cheerful.

Annoyingly so, though Briata refrained from admitting that, even if
Lanniya_had_ made her uncomfortable with that hug. It was far too
familiar far too soon. "And I understand she plans to Stand."

Y'gel chuckled deep in his chest. If anyone knew how difficult it was
to get to know his rather reserved weyrmate, it was he. Yet she was
one of the most loving and gentle people he'd ever known. "She really
seems to want to. When she got here she walked right up and started
talking to Aug like she'd known him for ages. Didn't seem to surprise
Aug in the least."

"I've found very few dragons who were ever off put by my ability, so
that doesn't surprise me either." Most dragons simply accepted it, as
if she had been talking to them for turns. Perhaps it was simply
because they were so used to having minds in their mind, their riders'
and other dragons, that it was just natural. "I have to admit, I
thought I was naive and innocent before...well, I see now I've been
out done."

This time he laughed and hugged her. "You, my love, are simply a
wonderful person with a huge heart. I doubt you can ever be out done."
**At least not to me**

Briata lifted a hand to lay it over her weyrmate's cheek. "You are
very sweet and very blind to my faults, for which I am very grateful.
No, I'm a little concerned. The Weyr is a far cry different from any
other place on Pern. I just hope the way of life doesn't come as too
much of a shock, that's all."

"Well there are many things you can teach her Briata. Even if flights
from a rider's point of view isn't something you're familiar with, you
do have Jewel. But I take your meaning and had already been keeping an
eye on her."

"Good. Hopefully she will adjust well." It seemed like she already
had. Abnormally so. There was something off about that girl, but
once again, Briata refrained from commenting about it. "And I'm sure
the dragons will help keep an eye on her as well."

"I hope she does," he mused. "I may ask Solieira to assign her to the
dragon infirmary for a few shifts. If she's as perceptive as you she
could be a great asset during 'Fall."

"It is very useful, one has to admit that." And it might ground the
girl in the reality of life. It wasn't that Briata thought she should
be traumatized, but the girl needed to know what she'd be dealing with
and it was better to do it sooner rather than later. "And dragons
always seem to enjoy it when people talk to them, whether they can
hear or not - but especially when they can be heard."

He kissed her temple, "You are more help than I can possibly tell you.
But you'll have to get her out of there if things go south. Aughashyth
will let you know if it's time." His hands began to run over the
warmth of his weyrmate and his thoughts drifted toward more intimate
activity.

"I will." Briata wriggled against the ministrations of his hands, a
smile tickling over her mouth. "I think you'd rather change the
subject, however."

"Hmmm handy thing," he said kissing her neck and seeking tender spots
with his hand and lips. "I appears you can hear my thoughts too." He
began to show her just how much he appreciated her finer qualities.
