Panitath had been moving uncomfortably for days so when she announced
that she was making her way to the hatching grounds it wasn't a big
surprise.

}:The eggs are coming soon:{ she announced to her mate and waddled off
down the wide corridor to the Sands. The huge cavern had been kept
half lit with braziers and the bright light from the weyrbowl knowing
the queen would need it soon.

She chose her spot carefully and scooped sand from one place to
another before finally turning around and around to push the soft
mound into the shape she wanted.

Cyradis got up from her couch thankful her Weyr was so close to the
hatching sands. She brought some pillows and a cool drink with her and
venturing down the same sloping tunnel found her way toward where her
gold was beginning her labor.

Loseth arrived, crooning a greeting to the queen. He peeked his head
in cautiously. }:May we come in?:{

}:Come,:{ Panitath replied immediately. }:And tell yours to help mine.:{

Cyradis was holding onto the tunnel wall uncertain how exactly she was
going to get to the benches.

Loseth entered and quickly moved out of the way so his rider could
cross the Sands. N'vanik hurried over to Cyradis and slipped an arm
around her waist. "Can you walk? Or would you like me to carry you?"

She looked up at him hopefully, "Would you? That would be wonderful,"
she smiled.

He chuckled and scooped her up gently. "Not every day I get to sweep a
Weyrwoman off her feet." He headed toward a spot that would give them
a good vantage point.

She smiled when he scooped her up. "Thank you," she said. "I'm sure
you sweep lots of women off their feet thought maybe not such pregnant
ones." Who wouldn't appreciate her tall and handsome Weyrleader. She
certain did in a purely aesthetic sense. **Ok not so pure** she
thought as the memory of their recent flight activity curved her smile
even more. But her heart was devoted to K'deren and they all knew it.

She dropped one of her pillows but didn't worry about it. She was sure
he'd go and get it for her. "There should be some food on the way,"
she said. "I asked Chaysea to prepare for this the other day."

He set her down on the bench and helped her get settled. "Good. How is
she working out so far?"

"Good," she nodded. "Her Headwoman skills aren't in question. But her
comfort level might be the difficulty." She was distracted by a grunt
and deep groan from Panitath. "Oh she's started," she pointed as the
first eggs were deposited almost one after the other. "Two, nice sized
ones," she smiled.

"Good start." N'vanik smiled, too. "I hope it's a nice big clutch. We
have to make up for the last one."

"Well, judging from our last clutch, I think the chances are good,"
she smiled. She looked up in time to see Panitath nudging another egg
with her nose. "That's three and it's only been about an hour."

}:You're doing well my queen,:{ Loseth crooned from the ledge above her.

Panitaths eyes whirled blue-green and Cyradis smiled. Loseth really
was good for Panitath and no matter how rocky their beginning had
been, she and N'vanik were working very well together now. That is
what counted.

As the hours passed more and more eggs joined their fellows in the
sands.Trays of refreshments showed up at the door and N'vanik took
care of her.

"How many is that now," she asked. She couldn't quite see them all
from her angle though she knew there were near thirty of them on the
sands.

"Thirty-three, if my count is right." Panitath seemed to be slowing,
but he didn't think she was quite done yet. Certainly this clutch was
no disaster. Not that he had any doubts after how the Flight went.
Cyradis wasn't so bad when she loosened up a little. N'vanik smiled to
himself. No, not bad at all.

**Are you done?**

}:No, a few more:{ Panitath was preening with pride as she hovered
over her clutch. }:Come see:{

**Loseth's will have to bring me. Can he come close**

}:Not yet,:{ she responded. }:When I'm done:{

"She says there are a few more," she told N'vanik. "Then she'll let
you help me over to see them."

"Alright." He didn't think this would ever get old, watching a Queen
lay Loseth's eggs.

}:I've gotten very good at catching golds,:{ Loseth said in a smug
tone. N'vanik bit back a smile.

The minutes dragged on until finally Panitath announced she was
finished. Her wings still hovered over the collection of eggs but she
lay around the fresh mound and nudged one or two of them before she
would let them come and count.

"Alright. We can go look now," Cyradis smiled and held out a hand for
him to help her up.

He didn't carry her this time, but supported her as they made their
way down the stairs and out onto the Sands. They moved around the
clutch, counting as they went. "I have thirty-seven," N'vanik said.
"You?"

"Me too," she smiled. "That is a nice solid clutch and the eggs are
very nice sized too. Congratulations, we should have a nice hatching."
