D'hol

Since the gold flight and the resulting uproar afterwards, D'hol had
kept himself quietly separate from both Weyrleader and Weyrwoman
except during the meetings that he was required to attend. And then,
as he had promised to Cyradis, he kept things civil and polite, if a
bit cool and distant, even if he happened to want to take N'vanik's
head and bash it repeatedly against the big table in the council room.

So when he heard the knock at his office door, he wasn't expecting
Cyradis to be in the door way. He glanced up from his hides and arched
a brow, quietly waiting for her to state her business.

She hated it when he was this way. It put a person on the defensive
the moment they walked in. She rather thought that unless he could
find a way to lighten up a bit he'd make a very stern and divisive
Weyrleader if Yumath ever managed to catch Panithath.

}:He'll have to be faster next time,":{ her gold replied smugly.

Cyradis didn't comment but approached D'hol and took a seat across
from him. "I hear you're expecting," she smiled. "Congratulations!"

D'hol put the hides down and inclined his head. "Thank you. But you
knew before I did." He folded his arms on his desk and looked at her
across from him. "A social call or something else?"

"Both," she said. She knew he had good reasons for keeping her at arms
length and she tried to respect his limitations for the most part. "I
have some questions, hopefully as a friend. But first I want to tell
you that I'm not trying to stir anything up.. just ask questions."

"Hopefully...and not trying to stir things up." D'hol sighed and
slowly sat back in his chair. "Why do I get the immediate feeling that
these aren't questions I'm going to like?"

"Because you're smart?" She smiled and her dark eyes crinkled at him.

There was a sharp exhalation through his nose as D'hol's brow arched
higher. "Well, yes, we both know that. And buttering me up isn't
earning you points." His lip corner gave the barest twitch of
amusement. "You might as well spit it out."

"Who said I was trying to rack up points? I thought it was the other
way around." She pointed at herself an lifted her hand. "Goldrider,"
and grinned at him.

"But seriously, is there a real chance that the baby was the result of
Jeyme's last flight?" She was politely inquiring.

That question caused any humor that had been in his expression to
rapidly fade. It was as though a wall shuttered down over his eyes as
he looked at Cyradis, his face cool. "And we can stop the questions
right there. You asked me to keep you out of it, and I plan on it. But
that also means you don't get involved."

"Alright," she nodded politely. "But I will leave you with this to
think about. And please bear with me as this is from personal
experience." She looked sincerely into his eyes. "Children grow up,
they become adults and the truth comes out. It doesn't matter what we
might want, it will happen, and then they will make decisions about
you, about Jeyme, and about N'vanik. If the child is his and you keep
him away, that child will someday hate you for it."

She made a stirring motion with one hand. "All this was part of the
reason I told you about Kielya. It was obvious to anyone with two eyes
who her father was. She was going to find out and so were you. Whether
or not I wanted anyone to know I really had no choice. It just took me
awhile to realize that fact. But here's the thing. Someday it will
hurt you." She shook her head. "I don't want that to happen to you
D'hol. Being the biological contributor and being the daddy are two
different things. You'll always be this childs daddy, whether or not
N'vanik contributed sperm. But if you keep him away, he'll hate you,
and I know you don't care about that. But someday, so will the child."

D'hol's jaw twitched and tightened.**What part of not being involved
did she not understand?** He leaned back, anger sparkling in his eyes,
but he surprisingly kept his temper. "You're right. I don't care about
how N'vanik feels. Obviously you do and I'm touched...really. Its all
well and good that a Weyrwoman wants to back her Weyrleader. But this
will be my child. He isn't wanted or needed. But again, it's not your
concern and this subject is not up for conversation. " He eyes
twitched as he leaned forward. "Did N'vanik ask you to speak on his
behalf, Cyradis?"

She shook her head. "Really? _That's_ your takeaway?" She sighed. "I
came here for you, and to a lesser degree for Jeyme and N'vanik. That
child could be some random blueriders if things had gone different on
that day. We both know that" She got up and stood by her chair for a
moment. "I hope this doesn't come back to bite you D'hol, I really
do."

"And the child would still be mine, Cyradis." He looked up at her. She
hadn't answered his question, which was answer enough. "Why is it,
Cyradis, that for all the turns you've known me, you still don't
understand me? I think I've shared enough in my lifetime. I have a
daughter that doesn't know me and calls another man 'daddy'. I get
'seconds' flung at me from my own weyrmate and I was never good enough for you.

This time...this child... I'm not sharing any more."

"I could ask you the same question. You assume all the time about what
I feel or what I think. But I think I understand you too well," she
smiled sadly. "You're making strides with Kielya. She adores you. So
you go ahead feeling sorry for yourself and miss what life really has
to offer you."

He finally slammed his hand down on his desk. "This isn't about
feeling sorry for myself, shaffit!" He rose and leaned on his fists on
the desk to look at Cyradis. "If you think that, then you're mistaken.
I don't. But you're right. I don't know how you feel or what you
think. What I do know is that you came in here trying to convince me
that I'm in the wrong again. Did you even attempt to consider my point
of view or what I thought about this situation? Or how I felt about
it? Or that I didn't want to talk about it? No, you blazed in,
ignored that I said I didn't want to discuss it, and kept going. What
I thought and what I said didn't matter a bit to you."

"You just want to be angry and ignore any advice no matter how well
intentioned. Of course I tried to see this from your point of view."
She could finally feel herself starting to clench up and she couldn't
go back into labor no matter what. She put a hand on the side of her
well rounded abdomen. "I think we're done here today." She turned on
her heel and walked toward the door. She had to get back to her weyr
and lie down a contraction was starting and she'd promised Vandor so
faithfully to try and remain stress free. "You matter more to me than
you can possibly realize." she muttered as she got far enough down the
hall not to be heard.
