"So I have a question for you," R'enh said as the last of the
wingriders left the room and he followed N'vanik to his office. They
often chatted after a wing meeting sharing thoughts and observations
from the drills. But this was different This was more... personal in
nature.
"Yeah?" N'vanik set down the Thread charts.
R'enh sat down and put his feet up on the corner of the desk. "How
did you know, I mean, when you decided it was time to Weyrmate?"
A chuckle escaped N'vanik. "Well, technically, I never actually
decided. Tal has her own weyr. We just stopped correcting people."
"Interesting," he said. "So people just assume you live together. How
does that work out for you?"
"We do live together, just ... separately," N'vanik said with a smile.
"We both like having a place to call our own, even if we're usually in
each other's weyrs."
"So how do you even manage a relationship like that?" He was in rather
unknown territory. He'd always kept things light and friendly. Except
for Zoara of course, but that had been long ago and she hadn't lived
beyond the birth of their son.
N'vanik studied him. "Why are you asking?"
"Just been thinking about a similar arrangement," he shrugged
"You mean not-a-weyrmate but more-than-lovers?" N'vanik's eyebrow
arched. He stared speculating on who it could be. The Weyrwoman's
Second? Or maybe that greenrider he'd mentioned a few times?
"That's a good way to put it," he smiled back at N'vanik. He knew he
still needed space to be alone at times. A woman around _all_ the time
tended to make him a little uncomfortable. That and he wasn't certain
she'd not try for exclusivity if he were to ask her to move in with
him. He _knew_ he wasn't ready to make that kind of promise.
"So who's the lucky woman?"
"Aishara," he said with a smile.
"Ahh, that greenrider. So things are getting serious." It was more a
statement than a question.
"More than usual," he said. "But I'm not quite certain what to do
about it. She's not demanding or anything."
"I'm not sure I'm the right person to ask. Things with Tal just sort
of happened." Their relationship had always been odd.
"Well I don't know who better to ask." The affable bronzerider was
always friendly and outgoing but with no close friendships. Until he
and N'vanik had somehow gone from a working relationship to a true
friendship.
"I guess we'll just figure it out as we go along then," he smiled.
"Wanna go for a beer?"
"That's a great idea," N'vanik said with a smile.
