"Sir," L'cor tapped on the door of the Weyrleaders office. "You wanted
to see me?"
"Yes." N'vanik waved him in. "First, I'm going to spoil the surprise.
You're going to be in my Wing."
"Oh!" A broad grin broke out, "Sir, that's great, I mean, I'll work
hard and," he realized he was babbling as he walked to the chair
across from N'vanik. "Sorry," he subsided a little sheepishly.
N'vanik smiled. "I'm glad you're excited. I chose you because you've
shown a lot of promise in your training. I think you'll make a fine
Wingleader someday."
L'cor locked his jaws as his heart leaped at the Weyrleader's words.
He didnt want to embarrass himself by a repeat performance of his last
outburst. But he couldn't hide the sparkle as his eyes widened. "Sir!"
He smiled and nodded. "I'll try my best."
So eager, and as far as he could tell, nothing false about the boy. "I
did have one thing I wanted to discuss. Nothing serious, don't worry.
But I've heard you and Oria might be in a relationship?"
His eyes widened, he didn't understand how that information could
possibly... "er.. Yes? At least I _think_ we are."
"This isn't really an issue unless one of you holds rank over the
other, but you're young and new to the Weyr. I just want to make sure
you're clear that when we fly 'Fall, you have to stay focused on the
task," N'vanik said. "You can't be worrying about one of your fellow
riders."
"Yes sir," he nodded. They'd talked about that in their classes. Not
that he could be certain he could keep from worrying about Oria if she
were anywhere nearby and in danger. Still he knew he had to think
about it.
"Let me know if you think you can't handle it. If it becomes a
problem, we can discuss transferring one of you." Although N'vanik
didn't want to give up either rider.
"I'll handle it sir," he said. He would be sure he could handle it
because he didn't want to lose his shot at the vista the Weyrleader
had opened up for him.
"Good." N'vanik smiled. "Did Oria's green Search you?"
L'cor smiled at the memory and surprise of that day. "Yes, she did and
Ciendra the same day. I'd never been so close to a dragon before
that."
N'vanik chuckled. "Carried away on a dragon and then swept off your
feet?" he teased.
"They took my breath away," he smiled back. "Both of them."
"Sounds like a harper tale, although usually the bronzerider does the
sweeping." N'vanik thought of another young man he hoped would be a
bronzerider. L'cor was almost the opposite of Jenackt -- honest, open,
uncomplaining, easy to talk to. But he liked them both, for different
reasons.
L'cor smiled at that and nodded. "Well I did do a little sweeping of
my own once I was a Senior Weyrling."
"Good for you. Don't go breaking too many hearts."
L'cor blushed as thoughts of his recent activities flew through his
mind. Tonuth had begun to chase greens recently and that meant flight
rooms and moths and, "Yes sir," he said "I'll do my best."
"I'm sure you will," N'vanik said. "How is Tonuth? He's grown up well.
Loseth says they still talk a lot."
"More like Tonuth bothers him a lot. He's got a serious case of hero
worship I think. But he's doing great. I think he'll even catch a
green one of these days." L'cor grinned at that thought.
"I'm sure he will. A fine bronze like that will have a green prize
sooner rather than later. Probably catch a gold in a few turns."
N'vanik smiled. "Then Tonuth can have little hero-worshippers of his
own."
"You really think so?" He'd wondered how long it would take for him to
learn. It seemed like the younger dragons just simply got outflown by
the older ones.
"With greens, sometimes it's just luck. They make a sudden turn, and
if your dragon's in the right place he gets a surprise catch. Or the
green might choose Tonuth, regardless of his age or experience. With
golds... that should take a while." Although the recent small clutch
was a reminder that a very young bronze could still catch a queen.
L'cor nodded. "Tonuth tired long before that flight was near the end,
thank Faranth." He smiled and shrugged. "But he sure wanted to try. It
was intense."
N'vanik smiled knowingly. "Yeah, gold Flights are something else." It
wasn't that long ago that he used to dread them because he never won.
How things change.
L'cor smiled again, '"They are," he said. "But I'd really like to win
one of Oria's flights.,, yeah. When are Hurricane's next drills
scheduled sir?" He certainly wanted to be on time for that.
"We have morning drills the day after tomorrow. I want you to observe
once or twice before joining in. I do that with all incoming
weyrlings." N'vanik thought it helped to see how the formations looked
in action before having the new riders try it.
L'cor nodded. "Yes sir, are there any particular formations you want
me to study?" He'd always had a knack for working with hides. Probably
why he'd become a steward. He found that studying was something that
helped him a great deal.
"The high winds variation six and the double V," the Weyrleader said.
"And don't worry. I'm sure you'll do fine."
