Saidrene stared down at the dragon anatomy sheet that she had been
working on with disgust. She only had fifteen parts labeled and their
instructor had said that there should be at least seventeen done to
complete the assignment. As she usually did whenever she had a
question with her craft, Saidrene went to the only person she could
trust to give her a straight answer- her mother.

Leaving the empty classroom she had been using as a quiet place to
work, Saidrene flicked a long strand of her inky black hair over her
shoulder with annoyance as the wind from the Weyrbowl whipped around
her legs. Ducking into the safety of the Weyr corridors, she navigated
the passages easily until she came through the door to her mother's
weyr.

"Mom!" She called out, not looking up from the piece of parchment as
she casually grabbed up a redfruit from the table with her free hand
and munched down into it noisily.

"She's not here yet." Jenackt had lifted his head from resting in his
hand, looking up from the chair he sat in and tapped his other fingers
impatiently on the arm. He didn't want to be here and he didn't like
being made to have these sharding, stupid etiquette lessons. He'd be
damned if he'd use the bloody things. But at least he'd had time to
clean himself up this time. His hair still hung over his brow,
desperately needing a trim, but it was a minor rebellion against
Saibra compared to what he was capable of. He barely flicked a glance
at the girl before plopping his head back into his hand.

Saidrene, so use to her mother only having visitors over at night
(because they were usually of the male variety) panicked when she
heard another voice answer out that did not belong to her mother. She
gasped as her head snapped up, and in doing so the piece of redfruit,
that she had bitten off, flew straight down into her windpipe, lodging
itself there firmly. **Oh Faranth, I'm choking! I'm choking in front
of a really cute guy! I'm going to DIE in front of a cute guy by
CHOKING!** Her hazel eyes, the only feature she had inherited from her
father, were impossibly large as she dropped the paper and rest of the
redfruit that she had been holding and clutched at her throat with her
fingers.

The gasp and the sudden thump of redfruit brought his attention back
to the girl that had just disturbed him. He blinked, took only a
second to recognize what was happening and leapt up with a curse.
Everything from both candidate classes and Vandor's private lessons
ran through his head and he acted, sprinting around the girl, wrapping
his arms around her and then using the technique he had been shown. He
only hoped that it actually worked...he did not want to explain how a
dead girl ended up in Saibra's office while he was in there. That was
the last thing he needed.

Even in the face of death, Saidrene's teenage mind immediately jumped
to all kinds of conclusions as the youth got up and wrapped his arms
around her from behind. **I could probably enjoy this if I wasn't
CHOKING!** The wild thought raced through Saidrene's mind. Finally,
the piece of redfruit dislodged itself, shooting out onto the floor
and freeing her airways. Saidrene gasped again involuntary, gulping in
air as her face returned to its normal color. Tears had streamed down
her cheeks in the process and she hastily wiped her face with the
backs of her hands. **How embarrassing.** Now that she wasn't choking
she was pretty sure that she was going to keel over from
embarrassment.

"What is going on here?" The stern voice was easily recognizable, and
Saidrene's eyes immediately snapped to the figure of her mother.

The moment she gasped for air, Jenackt let go and took a step back.
"You okay? Need water?" He was reaching out to touch her shoulder,
when the familiar sound of Saibra's voice interrupted them. It was
then that he realized that this might not look very innocent to
unknowing eyes. He immediately took another step back, turned and
raised his hands. "The girl was choking. I just helped. Didn't touch
her other than that."

Saidrene's face flushed red as she stood awkwardly apart from Jenackt.
How did her mother know this gorgeous creature? **Oh mom please don't
embarrass me.** She willed silently.

Saibra probably would have reacted more violently if her daughter was
standing perfectly fine before her, cutting her eyes sideways at
Jenackt in an all too obvious manner. **Oh great.** The goldrider
believed Jenackt, she had no reason not to and knew Saidrene better
than that.

"Are you okay?" She asked of Saidrene.

"Yes." Saidrene's eyes were on the floor.

"Did you need something?" Saibra asked.

"Oh, right." The teenager collected her paper from the floor and
tossed the redfruit in the trashbin, "I just had a question on my
dragon anatomy."

Saibra had never seen Saidrene try to act so meek and demure. She
raised an eyebrow, but took a look at the sheet anyway and scribbled
on the two missing elements, "Now get out of here and stop making
googly eyes at Jenackt."

There was the blush again, Saidrene turned a violent shade of red.
**Of course it was too much to hope for.** She thought as she snatched
her paper back from her mother, her eyes carefully avoiding Jenackt's
until she passed by him and gave him a brief glance, "Thanks." She
ducked her head then and left.

**Teenagers.** Saibra thought with a sigh. She knew that at fifteen
Saidrene was plenty old enough to be interested in boys but she didn't
exactly want to see her daughter running around making goo-goo eyes at
everyone either.

"Thank you Jenackt." Saibra said, echoing her daughter's gratitude.

He watched the byplay without comment, but the mention of "googly"
eyes made him blink. What in the blazes were "googly" eyes supposed to
be? He glanced at Saibra, then at the girl. The young girl was
probably embarrassed. Shards, he would be too. He shrugged at the
girls gratitude and nodded. "No problem."

He turned back to Saibra and shrugged again. "It was nothing. Vandor
taught me." He looked over his shoulder and then back at Saibra.
"Someone else you're teaching?"

"Well, you could say that." Saibra said as she came in and sat down,
motioning for Jenackt to do the same, "She is my daughter."

His face went absolutely blank. "Oh. Uh...she seems...nice enough." He
moved to the chair and slowly sat. "I think I surprised her. Sorry."

Saibra chuckled, "Yes, you probably did. She is not use to anyone
being in my weyr during the day." She took in the youth's appearance,
"How have you been?"

"Fine."

"Good, let's continue our lesson then....." **Day Two.**
