Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr

Corowal had asked to speak with him privately, so N'vanik led him up
to his office. "What is it?" the Weyrleader asked.
"It's about one of your candidates. Do you know who he is?" Corowal
said and then proceeded to descripe Jenackt. He had recogniized the
boy when he Stood at the sand and frankly had been quite surprised to
see the little thief wear candidate-white. Good thing he didn't bring
Zandan along to Hatchings, for the guard captain would certainly had
rushed to the Sands to strangle the boy. Hatching or not. The fact he
had managed to escape and elude re-capture had infuriated the Captain
beyond reason. Corowal took it more calmly, the incident had been
embarrassing yes, but the boy wasn't a murderer or raper, so there was
no need to hunt him beyond the hold's borders.
"He calls himself Amitko, though I doubt that's his real name. A
sweeprider found him injuried and I convinced him to stay for a
while." N'vanik leaned against his desk. "So what do you know about
him?"
"Well, firstly, his name is Jenackt.Secondly, he is a holdless thief
and a jail-breaker," Corowal repled. He was quite curious to see the
Weyrleader's reaction.
N'vanik lifted an eyebrow. "A jail breaker? When did that happen?" The
thief part didn't surprise him at all.
"During the Turnover Gather. He was waiting to be brought trial.
Because of the Gather, the guard staff was streched thin, and it was
easy to blend in and disappear to the crowd, especially since he had
been given clean clothes for the trial. He took an elderly guard a
hostage and by threatening him, got the guards sent to fetch him
locked into his cell. Then it was just matter of walking out," Corowal
told him. He couldn't help a little chuckle. A part of him admired
Jenackt's guts and audaciousness. "A guard was injured during his
escape," Corowal's tone turned serious again.
"Hmm, that is unfortunate." N'vanik had a lot of questions for
Amitko... Jenackt. Desperation could drive a person to do things they
normally wouldn't, but he was concerned that the young man might be
dangerous. Had he misjudged him? "I'll have to talk to him to see what
his side is, then I'll decide what to do. I knew he was holdless, but
this is much more serious."
"He was facing a few months of labour service in a iron mine for his
crimes," Corowal said. "Although he acted like we were about to hang
him."
"He does tend to think the worst of people. So far he's behaved
himself here, but I'll have to see if he's willing to be more honest
with me." After all, he couldn't risk the boy hurting any of his
people. "He was Searched, and you know we need all the riders we can
get. Even if they're a little rough around the edges."
Corowal nodded. "He managed to find the only place in Pern where I
can't touch him," he said wryly. Another Lord Holder would had been
happy to hand over man like Jenackt to Corowal. "He's not welcome to
Emerald Falls's territory, unless he's dragonrider on weyr business
and even then he's better take care of fast and leave as soon as
possible. Can you make sure he knows it too?" Corowal said and asked.
"Of course." N'vanik could use that as leverage. Amitko... Jenackt
might not want to stick around since he hadn't Impressed. Now N'vanik
had one very good reason for him to stay.
"He's your problem now," Corowal grinned.
"I'm glad you're happy to be rid of him. I wouldn't want this to cause
any trouble between us." Weyr autonomy meant Corowal couldn't do
anything about it, but that didn't mean the Lord couldn't be upset
about the situation.
"Frankly, his escape was more embarrassement than anything," Corowal
shrugged. "He might be shocked to know, but he's not worth causing
trouble. My Guard Captain doesn't share my view, so if Jenackt ever
shows his face in Emerald Falls hold, his life might be in danger."
"I understand. And I'll make sure he does, too." Hopefully the boy
would understand that staying at the Weyr was better than any of the
alternatives.
"Good," Corowal replied.
