Description: An educational meeting for the young bronzerider
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 3, day 7 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned C'baz
L'cor had been informed by the Weyrlingmaster that he was to go to
N'vanik's office this morning for some sort of consultation. He
dressed his in his best leathers including the belt with the buckle
he'd purchased from his friend C'baz. So, when the appointed time
arrived he was standing outside the Weyrleader's door.
"Sir," he inquired from the doorway. "You wanted to see me?"
"Yes." N'vanik gestured for him to have a seat. "I like to meet with
all the bronze Weyrlings and give them an idea of what it's like to be
Weyrleader."
L'cor took the seat he was offered. "Oh," he smiled. He was ambitious
and knew that at some point in the future it was indeed possible but
even as he was pleased by the instruction he also knew that this was
probably something every bronzerider learned at some point. "Thank
you sir," he said.
"You were a steward's assistant, if I remember right?" N'vanik asked.
"Yes sir, I was." He nodded. "At Green Valley Hold."
"Then you'll be familiar with hidework," N'vanik said with a little
smile. "I try to get through mine as efficiently as possible so I
don't have to spend more time on it. Besides things like transfers and
duty rosters, I also have to look over Threadfall charts and
formations. There's a lot of strategy and planning involved." It made
his head hurt sometimes, but he did like the challenge.
"Very familiar," he smiled. "I know it may seem strange but I actually
enjoy hidework." His interest was caught on some of the things N'vanik
mentioned. "I'd love to see those charts sometime." Knowing somewhat
about what a Steward had to deal with in a small Hold he could only
imagine what would be needed to handle a huge Weyr like Dolphin Cove.
"Sure. You'll have some training on them in class, but it's good to
have some extra study." N'vanik thought he had high potential of being
a 'Second in a few turns.
L'cor nodded enthusiastically. He'd thought his years learning to be a
steward might have gone to waste but this conversation was opening his
eyes in more ways than one. Tonuth's formless ambition to get big and
do wonderful things crystallized inside him into something more
specific. He knew with a certainty he couldn't explain, someday he
would be a Weyrleader like N'vanik. He couldn't think of a better role
model. He'd watched and listened to the riders around him and he knew
how much they all trusted their leader. "I'll do whatever study you
think is needed," he said.
"Right now it's up to you how much you want to learn. We can talk more
after you graduate about what I need." One of the perks of being
Weyrleader was he got first pick of the weyrlings, and he had his eye
on L'cor. N'vanik had a sense the young man was ambitious, and he
hadn't seen a hint of arrogance or ego.
"Of course!" L'cor smiled. "Wherever I can help I'm happy to pitch in
sir. Tonuth and I are working very hard." He'd been taught from an
early age that hard work was the only way to advance and he wasn't
afraid of it in the least.
He could also understand the duty rosters. He'd had to turn out enough
of those for Deveker when he'd been at Green Valley and even at his
mother's Inn. "What about supplies? Where do your duties and the
Weyrwoman's overlap?" He certainly didn't want to be stepping on any
golden toes.
"Supplies are the domain of the Headwoman, who reports to the
Weyrwoman. An overlap happens from time to time. For example, I
approve transfers, but Wingleaders can choose their Wingseconds.
Because the Weyrwoman is also a Wingleader, we worked together to
choose the new Weyrwoman's Second." N'vanik was glad that had worked
out. "The most important thing is discuss matters whenever there's a
potential conflict."
L'cor nodded as the Weyrleader talked. He'd worked with the Headwoman
at Green Valley and knew how seriously she took her own duties. "Is
there anything else I need to know right now?" His head was already
swimming with ideas and the shear possibilities that lay in front of
him.
"Just focus on getting through your training. Don't get too much ahead
of yourself." He planned to talk to R'enh later. Between the two of
them, L'cor would learn a lot and have plenty to do once he moved to
the Wing. **Please Faranth let him survive the Blooding.**
"Yes sir," L'cor answered. There would be plenty to think about just
from what N'vanik had told him today. It was very interesting stuff
and it was also motivating. He began to plan his next free time to
include some studying. He planned to know everything the instructors
could teach.
