Holding Bahji's hand, Gelira nervously made her way to the healer's
hall. What if she _was_ pregnant? What would she do then? Keep it of
course, was her first thought, but there were many things she needed
to consider.
"Come on Bahji, let's see if someone can help us," she all but pulled
her friend into the room with her.
"That would generally be me?" Reeva glanced up from her notes with a
smile for both women.
Bahji followed, being forced to move on quick feet and spoke softly to
try to calm Gerlira. "It's okay." Her head turned immediately at
Reeva's voice. "She needs your help, please."
"Very well."
Reeva's words were crisp as she rose, and gestured towards a more
private cubicle for them to continue the conversation.
"What seems to be the problem?"
Gelira followed Reeva to the cubicle, bringing Bajhi along with her.
When she was sure they were alone, she looked to the healer and spoke,
"Bahji here thinks I might be pregnant! I .... well... I wasn't
_expecting_ to be well... expecting. I mean. It's possible, but I
wasn't planning it, and well, do you think I am?" She'd rushed on, her
words coming quickly one over top of the other in her current
emotional state.
Reeva couldn't help the soft smile.
'Now, then, lets not get ahead of ourselves. Nowhere better to start
then at the beginning, after all. Why don't you hop up here, and we'll
take a look for the more obvious, and you can relax a little."
Gelira followed her orders. She hopped up onto the bed. Anxious and
eager. She tried to relax, but it was hard.
Bahji held on to Gelira's hand and murmured softly. "It'll be okay."
The first and obvious question had been answered unwittingly by the
girl herself, so Reeva didn't bother to ask it again.
She flashed Bahji a smile by instinct, then realising it was a
pointless gesture, and added
"So it will. I've yet to get caught eating anyone, and you have a
witness, so you'll be perfectly safe, I promise."
This sort of examination was intrusive by nature. It couldn't not be.
And while some of the Weyrgirls were outgoing and unphased, some still
clung onto the more modest attitudes of the hold- which she always
found ironic given the activities involved in getting to this
possability. Despite that amusement and the foolishly prudeish, Reeva
had taken care over the turns to make it as calm and simple as she
possibly could, avoiding much chatter but refusing to act up all
serious and hearler-ly either. Her examination was thorough but she
hoped not upsetting.
Gelira was anxious, but she tried to remain as calm as she could. The
examination wasn't something she was used to, but it didn't bother her
overly much as she'd seen many things herself in working with the
dragons and among other people. It was a bit uncomfortable at times,
but she tried her best to hide it.
Waiting, she looked to the healer. "Well?" She asked, finally unable
to contain her curiousity any longer. What would Reeva tell her?
Bahji also waited, having gone through this herself only sevendays
before, she knew how nerve-wracking the process was. She kept her hand
tight in Gerlira's and took a deep breath, waiting with nervousness to
hear Reeva's pronouncement.
Reeva offered a soft smile.
"You are pregnant, child. Well into your first stage- and healthy."
Gelira just stared at her for a moment. Blinking, she couldn't believe
the news she had just received. Pregnant. Her mind raced. There could
be only one. And yes, that would probably have been around the time.
"Oh my. I never expected this," she murmured. Her heart was
fluttering. She wasn't sure if she was excited, nervous, upset, or all
of the above. News of a child was _good_ news, but she hadn't
_expected_ this at all. It had just been a little fun between them.
Now, she'd have his child. A child? Her mind raced faster. A child!
She would be a mother! Tears sprang to her eyes almost immediately as
her hand slipped down near her stomach. Her mother had been wonderful.
She loved her and missed her terribly. Now _she_ would have the chance
to raise a child just as her own mother had. That was exciting and yet
terrifying at the same time.
"Thank you Reeva. I needed to know that." Gelira managed to say,
looking towards Bahji for her reaction.
Bahji smiled warmly to both women and squeezed Gerlira's hand. "I'll
help with whatever you need."
"Thank you," she replied to her friend, returning the squeeze.
"If there's nothing else I should know right now?" She looked to
Reeva. "It seems I have quite a bit of thinking and that to do."
