Cyradis sat still for a moment after the last of the candidates left
their Council chamber. "Well," she said with a half a smile at
N'vanik. "There is some potential there in more than just one of those
ladies." She arranged her notes in front of her, "I liked these three
in particular," she added before pushing them closer to N'vanik so
they could both look at them.
He nodded. "I like Valmina. She was quick to answer, she knew what she
wanted." And she had experience to back it up.
"Mmhmm," Cyradis mused. "I liked her too," she nodded. "Very self
assured. I liked her experience with younger goldriders too." She
thought for a moment looking at the notes. "But both of the others had
some experience there as well. But she doesn't bring any family with
her. Nor is she likely to produce any."
N'vanik shrugged. "Doesn't matter to me."
"But it's always good for the weyr to have the bloodlines of our
metallic riders continued. But that's not a main consideration, just a
good to have." She shook her head after a moment. "It's hard because
all three of them a good qualified candidates."
"Finally we have too _many_ choices." N'vanik glanced down at the
notes. "If a goldrider having children is so important to you, Saibra
has two." He thought it was shallow reason not to choose someone.
Cyradis grinned at N'vanik. She was learning to deal with his rather
acid take on things at times and didn't quite take it so personally as
she once had. "I do like Elyin's experience in leading during Fall. I
know Meledei has started training in that regard but she still needs
more seasoning to really be ready to lead the wing."
"Elyin doesn't have kids either," N'vanik said. "If that's a reason
not to want Valmina, it's a reason not to want Elyin."
Now she was getting a little irritated with him for being so childish.
If she didn't agree with him at once he'd find some silly way to pick
at something she said. "Children or the lack of them isn't a reason by
itself," she said. "Personality can be when it comes to working
closely with someone." She shrugged, "I didn't help you pick _your_
wingsecond."
"The Wings are my responsibility, even yours. I want us to agree, or
at least compromise. If you have good reasons not to want someone,
that's fine. I won't pick someone you really don't want." N'vanik
hoped she wasn't going to be overly picky. They had three very good
choices.
He was right, Faranth take him. Cyradis took a deep breath "Alright
then, lets just break it down. Any one of the three of them have the
necessary skills, some with a bit more experience than others. They
all seem stable." Maybe it was her own preference for family that had
her leaning toward Saibra. "Which would you pick?"
"Valmina," he said with little hesitation. "Something about her stood
out just a bit more than the others. But it's just going with my gut.
Any of the three stand out for you?"
"Yes," she said softly. Maybe it was just one of those things but
personally she'd felt a connection. "Saibra," she said.
N'vanik shrugged. "She was a little long-winded about her Impression
story. Maybe it was just nerves. But she's a dragonhealer, so that
could come in handy."
"Yes," Cyradis agreed. "I do think we'd have benefitted from Elyin's
greater experience with young goldriders. But Saibra just has more
experience and seemed more confident than either of the others, when
she spoke of leading the Wing." **Plus she doesn't remind me of my
past like Valmina does.** She tried very hard to keep personal issues
out of it when she made this kinds of choices but she didn't want to
set herself up for a fail. She really felt Saibra was her first
choice.
"You sure about Saibra?" He wanted Cyradis to be happy with the
choice, and he had nothing against that particular goldrider. Saibra
would have been a clear choice had she applied earlier. They just
happened to get three excellent candidates at the same time.
"Yes," she said and nodded as she reluctantly set Elyin's application
aside. "I'm sure."
"Then I'll respect your wishes and we'll accept Saibra. I hope she's
as good as she seems." And he hoped things didn't follow the pattern
of the last few goldriders.
She paused for a moment in surprise, Then she reached out and squeezed
his forearm. "Thank you N'vanik," she smiled. She hadn't expected that
in the least. "Should I contact her and offer the position or will
you?"
It was his job to accept transfers, but this was a special case.
"Would you like to?"
"If you don't mind," she said politely. She wanted to be able to work
with N'vanik. She admired his abilities as Weyrleader regardless of
their past their personality conflicts. He was a good leader.
"Go ahead." A mischievous smile crossed his face. "And you can let the
other two know that we didn't choose them."
"Of course," she gave him back a wry smile acknowledging the tweak
"and thank you." If she wanted to do the honors then she also had to
do the cleanup. "Anything else we need to discuss?"
He shook his head. "That's it for now."
