Description: The hurricane comes ashore.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 1, day 15 of Turn 7
The winds were already whipping around them as they worked to tie down
the last of the things they needed. The ships had been handled by the
seacrafters with as much helps as the Hall could spare.
Famell looked up to the sky. It was black, but the clouds were clearly
evident. The rains were only just beginning to drizzle. He knew they
were in for a lot worse as the next few candlemarks passed. The
Dolphin Hall was going to take a direct hit and then the hurricane
would quickly move on to the Weyr behind them.
"Let's double check the sea-cave's barricade is tied down before we
take shelter," he called over the high winds to the others assisting
him. Many of the dolphins had swum into the sea cave and the various
other safety areas designated for them. It was their duty to protect
them. Some of the dolphineers would be staying with the dolphins in
case they needed help.
Sitting down inside the lesson room, Veerona looked at the harpers and
the other children around her. This had happened before and everything had
been okay so she wasn't really worried about it but it was a bummer being
stuck inside. And she didn't have her own toys. And Lany was somewhere-too
busy.
Milga had been running messages back and forth but now there was no
more warnings to be send. All was left was last minute preparations
and then waiting the storm to blow over them. Milga headed for the
kitchens. A cup of something hot to drink would do her good.
"Master Search and rescue is prepared and ready to go as soon as the
storm has passed." Irabel approached the Hallmaster and followed his
gaze. They would leave as soon as it was safe to do so, their services
crucial to helping those who had gotten caught by the storm. Irabel
hoped, however, everyone would remain safe and word was spread in
time.
Jylanya was already busy with the crews securing the hurricane
shutters on all the sea facing windows of the hall including the third
level. If they could get them all in place before the worst of the
winds hit they could keep glass breakage down and hopefully the worst
of the debris. She'd already gone to the windowed classrooms to remove
the smaller furniture into the storage caverns.
"Sir," she called. "We're going to have to shutter these last few
windows in the next half hour. And you need to get your hides into the
big chest across the hall." And just like that she was off to check
the next floor.
Thayde, being a specialist in healing, was one of the dolphineers that
remained in the sea cave with a portion of the pod that they looked
after. His own dolphin partner, Addie, was among the group. Being the
intelligent creatures that they were, there was no panic among the
dolphins, only a calm sense of understanding with the sea as they
waited in the cave for the brunt of the storm to hit.
Shilara thrived on these conditions, her extensive studies in rescue
and salvaging coming into play. Against the rain that was beginning to
beat down she checked the barricade to the sea caves.
Running against the pouring rain, Shilara entered the Hall just as
they were closing the doors against the storm.
"The sea cave is secure." She told Famell, water streaming from her
body, her breath coming in soft pants.
Information was coming fast and furious now. Famell was processing it
all as fast as he could. A journeymen who'd been assigned to his side
was quickly making notes and talking to the people whom Famell missed.
He'd heard Jylanya's comment about his hides and quickly grabbed a
journeyman to run up and secure all the hides in the safest location
possible. He watched as the man took off running.
Then Shilara informed him about the barricade. "Alright people. It's
nearly upon us. I need you, you, and you, to get up to the floors and
help Jylanya shutter the remainder of the windows and move what can be
moved." He grabbed some items that had been left out on a table and
moved to one of the chests that was kept for just such a purpose.
Dropping the things into the chest, he shut it with a bang.
Aslvor had volunteered to stay with the dolphins as well. Her
knowledge of healing would come in handy. She knew the main barricade
was down over the cave, but it wouldn't completely protect them. It
kept out some of the worst of the storm, but they couldn't completely
close in the space or they would all drown. She'd been through enough
hurricanes to know that the cave would soon be filling with water.
Right now she stood out of the water, her wetsuit on and ready. No
need to tread water until she had to and there was a good chance they
would _have_ to.
Moving around she tied on the waterproof sacks that contained various
medical supplies to the special hooks that had been installed in the
walls of the cave they were in at the moment. It was the safest of all
the inner caves and one of the largest aside from the main cavern.
She could hear the wind and rain started to batter against the
barricade. The wind was really picking up.
"Here we go," she murmured, glancing around at her fellow dolphineers
and dolphins.
With most of the journeyman in the water with the dolphins, Naton had
taken up the task of overseeing the apprentices. He was helping them
follow up Jylanya's commands and every so often gave an encouraging
word to the younger, nervous looking ones. It was a job that suited
him, thanks to his jovial charm, and he took to it like a fish in the
water. Of course he wanted to be in the water, ready for a search and
rescue, should it be needed, but he knew Irabel would handle whatever
came their way with a flourish.
The wind continued to pick up and the rain became harder and harder.
Soon the sounds were reverberating through all areas of the Dolphin
Hall.
"Alright everyone, take shelter, just in case!" Famell called out. He
knew the dolphineers in the water had their own plan of action and
would follow it.
