When they got back to Dolphin Cove, N'vanik asked his Wingsecond to
join him in his office. He was still fuming over how Rhosyn had
treated him. "Sorry you got involved in that."
"She is a handful," he said with a rueful smile. He had known her for
many turns and even before they'd been transferred to their current
Weyrs.
"Sharding vain and selfish." N'vanik dropped into his chair.
"That too," he bit the inside of his cheek to keep from smiling. He
knew N'vanik would take it poorly. "But excellent in other ways."
"Just like a certain other goldrider that shut me out of her life."
R'enh hadn't been around for that, but N'vanik had vented about it a
few times. Sometimes over drinks. A drink sounded like a good idea
right now.
"Are you talking about Traelyn," R'enh asked. N'vanik and he had
gotten close but there were just some things the other bronzerider
still kept close.
"Yeah. She wasn't honest with me, either." Although Traelyn had been
hiding something much worse. He'd probably never know what it was, but
it was bad enough to make her want to kill herself and her Queen.
"Guess I'm a dimglow for thinking I meant something to her."
R'enh shrugged, "Not a dimglow," he said quietly. "Things just change
when you aren't looking sometimes. I'm sure she felt something at some
point." He paused a moment. "Did she ever tell you how she felt?"
"She made it clear we were doing more than fooling around. But how
much can she really care for me when she let me worry like that?" He
stood and opened the cabinet where he kept a few bottles of alcohol.
R'enh wasn't quite sure he followed that completely. "So are you
talking about Traelyn or Rhosyn?"
"Rhosyn." N'vanik half-turned with a bottle in his hand. "Want one?"
"Oh yes," he he nodded. "Well obviously she cried for help and Orlaith
picked up on who she thought could help even if she was slightly
delirious. Mnoranth got the call too... remember?" He shook his head
and watched N'vanik. "Se obviously wasn't in her right mind."
N'vanik snorted as he filled two glasses. "Delirious, right. She knew
what she was doing." He set a drink in front of R'enh and took a long
sip of his own. "My worry for her doesn't matter one bit of crackdust
next to her vanity. She's too embarrassed to tell me the truth so she
just left me to wonder what happened."
"Yes, well there is that," he tried very hard not to chuckle as he
accepted the glass. "Honestly, she should be a Harper on the stage
with the way she over blows things sometimes. I guess she doesn't
realize how it's affected you." R'enh just took Rhosyn with a grain of
salt. She'd always been 'different.' That was part of her charm.
"She doesn't _care_, that's the problem. Typical goldrider. The whole
world revolves around her and no one else matters." N'vanik was tired
of it.
R'enh couldn't agree more and lifted his glass to N'vanik in mute
acknowledgement of his point. "She's self involved like every other
goldrider." His thoughts of course were on Meledei though the thought
did apply to Rhosyn as well.
N'vanik lifted his glass as well, and drained half of it. "If only we
could do without them. You think we could convince greens to lay
eggs?"
R'enh chuckled. "I'm sure they'd be willing to try. But you know
they'd forget where they put them."
"It could give 'Searchrider' a whole new meaning."
He laughed out loud at that one and lifted his glass. "But would you
want a bluerider as Weyrleader?"
"Or worse -- a male greenrider as Weyrwoman. I can just imagine the
looks on the holders' faces if I had to show up to a Gather with a man
on my arm." Although the idea of them having to be extra polite to
that man was almost worth it.
R'enh snorted and his drink went down the wrong way so he began
coughing so hard he couldn't breathe. "Faranth N'vanik," he said when
he could finally talk.
"Didn't mean to make you choke," N'vanik said, laughing. "I'd hate to
have my 'Second die from a bad joke."
"No, no," he laughed. "It was the vision of someone like A'dori as
your weyrwoman." He shook his head. "I think you're much better off
with Cyradis."
"I hope so." Maybe she'd prove to be a stable, sane, unselfish Weyrwoman.
"I think I need another one of these," R'enh said as he lifted his empty glass.
"Me too." N'vanik poured them both another drink.
