Uetia was pacing back and forth in her weyr and fretting. "I haven't
heard anything about Sabonus in months. Has something happened to him?
Has he forgotten me?" she pushed a strand of hair out of her face and
looked Jayonne.
"No way, how could he?" As much as Uetia's words hurt, he understood.
He cared enough about her to let her go, if that's where her heart
lay.
"I don't know. Met someone prettier?" Uetia sounded uncertain. "The
other option is that something has happened to his ship, and that's
too scary to think about." She moved to sit next to Jayonne, leaning
to him for comfort.
"Oh, like he could find a girl prettier than you." Jayonne nudged her
and grinned.
"I'm not awfully pretty," Uetia said, still moping.
"Yeah right." Jayonne reached out and held her to his side. "Remember
when Jaylene dressed you up that one night?"
"I can hardly forget it. It was kind of fun," Uetia replied.
"It was. You were stunning." Jayonne smiled at the memories. "Of
course, you always are."
"Thanks. I know all harpers have golden tongues," Uetia replied and
grinned. He always managed to make her feel better.
"Ha! We don't!" Jayonne straightened up just to throw a pillow at her.
"Plus with a new hatching soon, I need to be nice to you so you can
fly me out of here before Rhosyn sees I'm not on the sands."
"You're not going to Stand?" Uetia asked.
"Do you think I should?"
"I think you would made a fine dragonrider, but then, I'm prejudiced,"
she said with a grin.
He screwed up his handsome face into a grimace. "Ever thought about
looking for Sabonus?"
"Yes, but where? It's a sharding big ocean. Maybe I'll bugger Tamah some
more, he can use his flits to locate the captain of Sabonus' ship."
"Maybe just take a rest day and try all the ports you know his ship will
go. Maybe you'll get lucky or, in the very least, get word of his
whereabouts." It pained him to say that, but it was Uetia's choice and it
seemed she was choosing Sabonus.
"I might try that too," Uetia said.
There were no words for that. Knowing the one girl he love was slipping
through his fingers, all Jayonne could do was kiss her softly on the head.
Obviously she wasn't for him.
