Bringing in a transfer as a ranker was a risk, especially a
Wingleader. But N'vanik had needed one, and this bronzerider had the
experience."So what made you choose Dolphin Cove?"
Taking a seat in the man's office, D'hol's brows rose as one ankle
crossed over the other. He rested his chin on his hand, taking N'vanik
in, his gaze measuring and weighing. Whatever his final verdict was
it was kept private as he answered. "Heard you had the need." His lip
twitched. "And it was a bit of a time for a change. Besides, I know a
few people here, so it wasn't a hard choice."
That was interesting. "Who do you know?"
D'hol arched a brow. "I know your Weyrwoman well. An interesting
woman." His lips lifted in a humorless smile. "The rest, well, I've worked
with several riders over the turns."
He knew Cyradis? That was even more interesting. "Hopefully that will
make it a bit easier to settle in. And her new weyrmate is your
'Second."
One brow arched. "Cyradis is with a brownrider....how utterly amusing."
D'hol didn't bother to hide a humorless smile. "I'm not sure about making
it easier, despite how well we know each other. I plan on seeing her
shortly after I finish here." He made a mental note to have a really
good look at his wingsecond's file.
**Jealous? Ex-lover maybe.** N'vanik would keep an eye out to make
sure something like that didn't cause problems in the Wing. "Yes, I'm
sure she'll want to know you've transferred." If he was an ex-lover,
had it ended badly?
D'hol gave a soft snort. "I'm sure she will." He sat up and eyed N'vanik.
"Anything else you'd like to know?"
N'vanik glanced at the transfer hide. "This notes some behavior
issues. Says you don't have tact. Can you tell me more about that?"
There was a low chuckle that emerged from D'hol. He was clearly
not surprised. "It means that I don't believe in sweetening the truth."
He leaned back in his chair and crossed one leg over the other.
"I don't believe in coddling and should people not approve, then
it's their problem."
"I appreciate honesty and directness." With a smile, N'vanik added,
"Which is why I asked."
"That's exactly what you'll get from me." His lips lifted even wider.
"Even if it's not exactly what you want to hear."
"I like to leave flattery to the Lord Holders."
"That's all I need to know." D'hol inclined his head, this time
a little more respectfully.
"I don't like formality, and I want my riders to enjoy life as much as
they can. Fighting Thread is serious business, but that doesn't mean
we have to be so serious about everything else." N'vanik leaned back.
"Dolphin Cove is probably more laid back than you're used to."
Brows rose in response. "And that's fine, as long as the laid
back attitude occurs outside of my wing during drills and fall.
What rider's do when not on duty is their own concern."
"We have very good riders here who know when to work and when to
play," he assured. "Many of them were here when we were understrength
and had to learn to do more with less. I don't suffer fools in drills
or Fall."
"Then I'll only expect the best out of them." D'hol's tone was firm.
"No less." He straightened in his chair and stared at N'vanik
with no lessening of intensity in his eyes. "I don't suffer fools
at all."
N'vanik met his gaze. "Just remember this is my Weyr, and you follow
_my_ orders."
**For now.** D'hol inclined his head in agreement. "We understand each
other then."
He would have to watch this one. "Unless you have any questions,
you're dismissed."
D'hol rose and gave a respectful bow. "Weyrleader." He turned
on his heel and left, mulling the meeting over slowly in his
mind.
