N'vanik

Not wanting to get into another argument at the Hatching feast,
N'vanik waited until the next day to call D'hol into his office.
}:Mine wants to see yours,:{ Loseth told Yumath.

}: Mine will be right there.:{ Yumath's answer was prompt
and within only a few moments, D'hol, fresh from bathing
after a drill knocked on the office door.

"Come in." N'vanik tried to make his expression neutral and held his
anger in check. It was sharding tempting to start off shouting at the
man.

D'hol walked in, his expression smooth, if a bit tired from his day.
"You wanted to see me?"

"Weyrwoman Rhosyn told me you insulted her and her escort yesterday. I
want to know your side of the story." Not that he really cared. D'hol
had upset Rhosyn, and that was enough for him.

D'hol blinked and then calmly faced N'vanik. "May I ask if this talk is
personal or from the office of Weyrleader? " He considered N'vanik
"Or does it even matter? I understand that Rhosyn is a close friend of
yours. I am not and you barely know me, and only my records, which are,
excepting the notations of my bluntness, exemplary. I can say that the Weyrwoman
had drank quite a bit of wine and was not exactly sober. Nor was
she polite. She was intrusive and quite adamant about telling me who her
friends were and questioning how I was connected to them. I am a private man,
Weyrleader, and being abruptly questioned by a stranger was not
appreciated. I apologize for the fact that she is your friend, but I did not
say anything uncivilized. How she took it, however, is not my doing."

N'vanik drummed his fingers on his leg so he wouldn't reach across the
desk and strangle him. "So because she asked you personal questions,
you felt the need to insinuate that she was going to sneak off and
sleep with her escort? And now you feel the need to tell me that she
was drunk, so I shouldn't believe anything she said?"

Loseth picked up on his rising anger. }:What's wrong?:{

**I might need to punch the new Wingleader.**

"Hardly." D'hol spoke calmly, one brow arched. "It was when
I refused to answer that she became belligerent and decided to let
me know who all of her friends were here. And she made insinuations
of her own." He took a slow breath. "As my Weyrleader, you and Cyradis
are the ones I have loyalty to and who I answer to. Not the Weyrwoman
from River Bluff, even if you are a personal friend of hers. Whether
or not you believe me is up to you. I doubt you will, as she is your
friend. It makes you biased against me immediately, no matter what
I say."

He looked at N'vanik squarely. "But I do my job here and I do it well.
That was what was asked of me. To lead my wing. Not to cater to
a Weyrwoman that was to my mind acting like a spoiled brat."

N'vanik stopped drumming and balled his hand into a fist, still hidden
under his desk. "If you'd like to keep doing your job, you'd better
remember that Rhosyn is a Weyrwoman and you need to respect her. I
don't care that she's from another Weyr, you answer her questions or
you _politely_ decline. Pissing off a friend of mine at a Hatching is
a sharding terrible way to make an impression. So yeah, I'm biased.
You do it again, I'm gonna reconsider your position here."

D'hol politely inclined his head. "Now that I know where your priorities
lie, I'll of course abide by them. " He gave a civil smile that did not
reach his eyes. "But you may also want to speak to your friend about
her own conduct. It was far from exemplary. But of course...she is your
friend, so she must be above reproach or fault. I shall remember that
in the future and be on my very best behavior, Weyrleader." He
bowed. "If there is not anything else, I have my dragon to tend to."

}:Please don't hurt Yumath's,:{ Loseth worried his rider might act on
the barely contained anger.

"If you spoke to her like you're speaking to me, I can see why she had
a problem." N'vanik's mouth turned up, and it wasn't a friendly smile
at all. "But I'm going to let this go, because I have a feeling you'll
be digging yourself a bigger hole before long. Go tend your dragon,
D'hol."

Not surprised that N'vanik didn't take his bluntness well, D'hol
simply inclined his head. He was young and most likely the
young Weyrwoman had him wrapped around her pinky. He'd
have to remember that detail. "Of course, Weyrleader." He kept
the civil smile on his lips, refusing to be needled by the threat.
He turned on his heel and walked out of the office, hands clasped
behind his back.
